We stayed in Matsumoto for 3 nights on a recent 3.5 week Japan trip focused on central Honshu and the Japanese Alps.
It turned out to be one of our favorite stops, with its relaxed small-town atmosphere, the beautifully preserved castle and unique museums, and simple things like pristine mountain spring water flowing nonstop from drinking fountains all over town.
Matsumoto also has easy access to incredible nature (Kamikochi and other Alps destinations) and historic Nakasendo post towns such as Narai-juku in Kiso Valley.
Matsumoto is about 2.5 hours from Tokyo via Nagano city.
