Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s AI video shows Mount Fuji’s eruption could blanket Tokyo in ash, halt transport, and cause blackouts, urging residents to stockpile essentials
The AI-generated video depicts what might unfold if Mount Fuji, Japan’s most iconic volcano, were to erupt without warning.
Clouds of volcanic ash engulfing Japan’s bustling capital Tokyo, people in Shibuya struggling to breathe, and the city buried under a grey blanket of dust – this is not a scene from a Hollywood disaster film, but a simulation video released by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. The AI-generated video depicts what might unfold if Mount Fuji, Japan’s most iconic volcano, were to erupt without warning.
The chilling clip shows the skies above Tokyo darkened by thick ash and smog, while famous districts like Shibuya vanish under layers of volcanic fallout. Authorities warn that such an event would not only pose immediate health hazards but could also have long-term effects on future generations.
According to scientists, ash clouds from Mount Fuji could reach Tokyo within one to two hours of an eruption, given that the volcano lies just 100 kilometres from the capital. Estimates suggest that ash deposits across the city could range anywhere between 2-10 cms in thickness.
The first casualty of such a disaster would be Tokyo’s transport infrastructure. Trains would grind to a halt as tracks became coated in ash, while airports would be forced to shut down as runways turned unsafe for takeoff and landing. Road transport too would become perilous, with low visibility and slippery conditions making driving extremely dangerous.

The video goes on to show that the government urges residents to keep at least three days’ worth of food and essential items at home in case of supply chain disruption. Officials also caution that once ashfall would begin, transport networks will be paralysed, leading to shortages in shops and supermarkets.
Evacuation, in that case, will only be considered when ash accumulation exceeds 30 cms, a level at which even wooden houses are at risk of collapse. But the threat extends far beyond homes and roads. If ash mixes with rain, the danger escalates further – wet ash can weigh down and snap power lines, triggering large-scale blackouts and crippling telecommunications across the city.
The video concludes with a stark reminder, “We do not know when Mount Fuji will erupt and cover Tokyo with ash. But we have to prepare from now, so that we can protect ourselves and our families.”
