The Tokyo Metropolitan Government, in preparation for the possible eruption of Mt. Fuji, has produced a video on the possible damage that could be caused by volcanic ash.

Government worst-case scenario estimates of damage caused by a large-scale eruption would have volcanic ash fall to a depth of 2 to 10 centimeters or more across Tokyo.

The area affected would be spread wide over Tokyo’s 23 wards and Tama area, and cause serious disruption to transportation and other services.

Tokyo released the video ahead of Volcano Disaster Prevention Day on August 26 to raise awareness among the public about the damage that could be caused by ashfall.

Generative AI was used to realistically depict the damage, using data from government estimates and information on past volcanic eruptions from across Japan.

The video also shows the impact of ashfall on lifelines and calls on people to stockpile masks and food on a daily basis.
