Finding a good place to stay in a big city like Singapore can be tough. You want something cool and comfortable, but also affordable and in a great spot. On my recent trip, I found a place that ticked all those boxes: The POD Boutique Capsule Hotel.

I had just come from Japan, so I really got used to the simple, smart, and calm style they have there. I was curious if The POD could feel the same. The hotel kindly hosted my stay, but this is my 100% honest review of what it was like.

Arriving and Checking In (It Was Super Easy!)

The first thing I noticed was how easy it was to check in. I used a simple touch screen to do it all myself, which was really fast.

Even though the check-in was modern, the staff were incredibly warm and friendly. One person saw I was new and gave me a tour of the whole place, which made me feel welcome right away.

In the main area, I spotted a coffee machine and a vending machine. The best part? The coffee is completely free when you stay there! It was so nice to be able to grab a good coffee in the morning without having to go anywhere.

The Main Hangout Area and the People I Met

The main common area is the heart of the hotel. It has a very simple and calm design with lots of plants, making it a great place to relax or get some work done.

A traveler from Pod Boutique Capsule Hotel

What I really loved was the people I met. The hotel attracts travelers from all over the world, and everyone was super friendly. I had some great conversations and made new friends just by hanging out in the common area. It had a wonderful community feel.

Inside the Pods: Your Own Private Room

Now for the most important part: the pods! I got to try both the Single Pod Suite and the Queen Pod Suite.

When you slide the door to your pod shut, it’s like entering your own little world. It’s quiet, peaceful, and feels very private. The bed is comfy, and there are lights and plugs for your phone and laptop.

The “Suite” pods are a fantastic choice if you need to work. They have a small desk that pulls out, so you can easily use your laptop in private.

One important rule is that you can’t take phone calls inside the pods. I actually liked this rule because it guarantees that the sleeping area stays quiet for everyone. It really helps keep the peaceful vibe.

The shared bathrooms and showers were also great. They were always very clean and had basic things like soap and shampoo, so you don’t have to pack your own.

The Location: Calm Inside, Exciting Outside

The location of The POD is perfect. Inside, it’s all calm and quiet. But the moment you step outside, you’re in the middle of the action. The hotel is right next to the famous Haji Lane.

For convenience, I counted three 7-Elevens less than a 5-minute walk away, plus lots of other little local convenience stores (called “konbinis” in Japan). This was amazing for grabbing late-night snacks or drinks.

At night, Haji Lane completely comes to life. It’s filled with cool bars, great restaurants, and live music. It’s a fun place to walk around and explore. A lot of the bars have a cozy feeling, similar to the local pubs/restaurants in Japan called izakayas.

If you want a specific recommendation, you have to check out Blu Jaz Cafe. It’s just a short walk from the hotel and has amazing live music.

Capsule Hotels and Their Japanese Roots

Capsule hotels are one of Japan’s most unique contributions to the world of travel. First appearing in Osaka in the late 1970s, they were designed to give busy city workers and travelers a practical, affordable, and compact place to sleep. Over time, they became an icon of Japanese urban life: small but smart spaces that balance privacy, efficiency, and community.

If you’ve ever stayed in Japan, you’ll know that capsule hotels are more than just a place to crash,  they’re an experience. The pods themselves feel futuristic and minimal, but the true charm comes from the blend of privacy and shared community spaces, where people from all walks of life come together.

The POD Boutique Capsule Hotel brings that same spirit to Singapore. From the moment you slide your pod door shut, you get the same sense of calm, quiet, and personal space that capsule hotels in Tokyo or Kyoto are famous for. At the same time, the common areas create that familiar atmosphere of casual encounters and conversations with fellow travelers.
