Jakarta: Indonesians can now make payments in Japan using QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard). Transactions can be carried out at participating merchants by scanning the JPQR Global code through domestic payment apps, without the need to exchange foreign currency.
Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo said the Indonesia–Japan QRIS connectivity marks a new chapter and underscores the strong commitment of both countries to strengthening economic ties through digital innovation. The initiative is expected to make transactions more convenient for the public.
“Now Indonesians can make payments more easily in Japan. This reflects a stronger, digitally connected, and increasingly seamless payment system,” Perry said in a written statement on Monday, August 25, 2025.
He emphasized that cross-border QRIS implementation not only simplifies transactions but also supports an inclusive digital economy, especially for MSMEs, the backbone of the economy, as well as tourists, while integrating further into the global economy.
Complements bilateral financial cooperation
The initiative complements the Local Currency Transaction (LCT) framework between Indonesia and Japan, agreed upon in 2019 and implemented since 2020. The Rupiah–Yen direct settlement scheme allows trade and investment transactions without relying on a third-party currency.
From January to July 2025, Indonesia–Japan LCT transactions reached USD 5.1 billion, up from USD 2.23 billion during the same period in 2024. User participation also increased, averaging 2,072 customers per month in 2025 compared with 1,360 per month in 2024.
The successful rollout of Indonesia–Japan cross-border QRIS was made possible through close collaboration among Bank Indonesia, the Indonesian Payment System Association (ASPI), Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI), the Payment Japan Association (PJA), Netstars, and financial institutions from both countries.
In its initial phase, QRIS payments will be available at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka (Indonesia Pavilion, official shops, and food trucks) and selected merchants at Haneda Airport. The coverage will gradually expand to more locations across Japan.
