The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is displaying on its website a map of bears found within its jurisdiction.
The map shows the precise locations and the times and dates the bears were spotted.
As of August 21, 154 bear sightings have been reported this year. They are concentrated in mountainous regions in the Tama region in western Tokyo, including Okutama Town and Hinohara Village.
A man who went river fishing in Okutama Town on Saturday was attacked by a bear. He sustained wounds on his face after being clawed by what appeared to be a bear cub.
Meanwhile, bears have been sighted near more populated areas, namely in Ome City and Hinode Town within the past month.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is advising extra caution in the early morning and late afternoon when bears tend to be more active and in areas where they have been spotted multiple times.
