Two of Japan’s largest airlines have more than doubled their capacity on select Australian routes, as Aussie travel to the country continues to climb.
The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) revealed that Australian travellers continue to head to Japan as a preferred destination of choice, with the latest statistics showing further monthly and year-on-year increases in Aussie visitor arrivals during July 2025.
50,200 Australians visited Japan during the month of July this year, a 3.3 per cent increase from the same month last year, as travellers continue to discover the destination’s diverse mix of unique attractions, interesting historical and cultural experiences, awe-inspiring scenery and mouthwatering cuisine.
Overall, for the year to date, the number of Australian travellers heading to Japan is up by 20.9 per cent, with the total number visiting up until the end of July sitting at 617,400.
“The July figures further underline the exceptional demand for Japan as a destination for a range of travellers, from couples and families, to solo and senior travellers,” JNTO media & marketing manager Andrew Coombs said.
“Australians are increasingly visiting new prefectures and into the regions as repeat visitors continue to discover the country’s lesser-known areas of a country that has so much to offer.”
More flights
In an update to its 2025-26 northern winter schedule, Japan Airlines (JAL) announced it will increase the frequency of its Melbourne-Tokyo Narita services from three weekly to daily flights (JL773/774) “in response to strong inbound demand during the winter season”.
The increased flights will operate from 26 October 2025 to 28 March 2026 using the carrier’s Boeing B787-8 aircraft.
The carrier will also resume its Narita–Shanghai (Pudong) route between October 26 and March 28.
Another Japanese airline, ANA, will also increase flight routes from Narita to Perth in the second half of FY2025 “in response to passenger travel demand and market”. Starting 1 December, four roundtrips per week will be added for a total of seven roundtrips weekly until 19 April 2026.
