During my trip to the Tōhoku region of Japan, my friends and I had been eagerly anticipating the ultimate seafood feast. All recommendations pointed to one place: the Shiogama Fish Market in Miyagi Prefecture. Known as a treasure trove for professional chefs, it’s also a paradise for seafood lovers like us. Filled with excitement, we woke up early and set out from Sendai on a culinary adventure, ready to start our day with the freshest flavors of the ocean.

Upon entering the market, the fresh, salty scent of the sea filled the air, accompanied by the energetic calls of the vendors. The entire market was buzzing with life. Dozens of stalls were neatly arranged, displaying a dazzling array of fresh catches from the Sanriku Coast, one of the world’s top three fishing grounds. From glistening fish and translucent sweet shrimp to plump scallops and salmon roe, everything was incredibly tempting. As a major hub for tuna fishing in Japan, the tuna here was an absolute must-try. We navigated through the aisles like treasure hunters, excitedly picking out our favorite seafood to create our very own custom kaisendon (seafood rice bowl).

The most enjoyable part of the experience was undoubtedly making our own kaisendon. After selecting our preferred sashimi from various stalls, we went to a designated shop to buy a bowl of hot rice and miso soup. Then came the best moment: carefully arranging each slice of fresh seafood on top of the rice. I immediately chose several pieces of fatty tuna (toro), beautifully marbled and enticingly pink. I also bravely tried whale sashimi for the first time, a rare and unique experience. Watching my friends assemble their own luxurious creations, we couldn’t wait to find a spot to dig in.

The moment the toro entered my mouth, a wave of happiness washed over me. The rich fat melted instantly, filling my palate with its sweet, delicate flavor. It was so delicious it left me speechless. The whale sashimi had a unique texture, slightly chewy with a subtle sweetness, making it an unforgettable part of my journey. My friends’ choices of sea urchin and sweet shrimp were equally impeccable. Best of all, the seafood was not only incredibly fresh but also very affordable, allowing us to indulge without hesitation. We spent the morning immersed in this wonderful feast we had created for ourselves, each bite a pure gift from the sea.

The Shiogama Fish Market is more than just a place to eat; it’s a vibrant hub of local culture and community. It has transformed from a professional wholesale market into a tourist destination where visitors can personally experience the charm of a fishing port. Every slice of sashimi here carries the bounty of the Sanriku Coast and the respect local people have for the ocean. If you’re planning a trip to Tōhoku, make sure to add the Shiogama Fish Market to your itinerary. This unique, self-made kaisendon will surely become the freshest and most cherished memory of your travels.
