JAPAN 2025 Trip Report: Is Tokyo Overcrowded?

Is Japan, and especially Tokyo, too crowded to enjoy a trip? We spent 10 days exploring Tokyo and the northern city of Sendai during the famous Tanabata festival to find out! From full trains and 30-minute queues even with a reservation to surprisingly empty temples and uncrowded airports, we show you the reality of traveling in Japan today. Including our experience with booking hotels for more than two people , and why you need to have a rough itinerary at least 3 months in advance to secure tickets for popular, sold-out attractions like Teamlab Planets and Borderless. Was it a relaxing vacation or a battle through a zombie hoard? Watch to find out!

  1. Great stream as always! I was in Japan during the last week of May and first week of June this year. Tokyo was surprisingly not very crowded at all, which I also heard from others visiting around the same time. Kamakura, however, was probably an 8 or so!

  2. Enjoyed today's topic! It was fun to hear about your latest Japan trip! I'm looking forward to the videos!

  3. its funny you brought this up, I saw a picture recently of a wall of people funneling down a narrow street and I just thought pass on that.

  4. Tip for the Keisei Skyliner: You can purchase you tickets off their website before you travel. They will email you a QR code and you just show a staff member in the office at the airport, skip that line plus it comes with a discount!

  5. I'm more concerned about being negatively stereotyped by the locals, in light of all the negative press westerners are getting in Japan
