The traditional “Ubagami Daijingu Togyosai” event, considered the oldest festival in Hokkaido, was held in the town of Esashi from August 9 for three days. Thirteen brave “yama” floats as well as “mikoshi” portable shrines paraded through the town, attracting many people. The festival is said to have begun to give thanks for a good catch of fish after the herring fishing season in summer. It has a history of over 370 years.
