[Provisional translation]

On August 20, commencing at 10:35 a.m., for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting with H.E. Mr. Joseph Nyumah BOAKAI, President of the Republic of Liberia, who is visiting Japan to participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9). The overview of the meeting is as follows:
 
1.    At the outset, Prime Minister ISHIBA expressed his respect for President Boakai‘s leadership in leading Liberia to become a non-permanent member of the Security Council (UNSC) in 2026/2027. Prime Minister ISHIBA also stated that Liberia is a model of peacebuilding, having overcome a long civil war and established democracy, and that he would like to deepen cooperation in a wide range of fields for the sake of peace and stability in Africa and the international community. In response, President Boakai expressed his high appreciation for Japan’s assistance and stated his expectation for the expansion of investment by the Japanese companies.

2.    Following that, Prime Minister ISHIBA stated that he would steadily implement projects symbolizing cooperation between the two countries, such as the Japan Freeway Extension Project and provision of equipment to the Liberian-Japanese Friendship Maternity Hospital. Prime Minister ISHIBA also stated that he would take advantage of opportunities, such as Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai and GREEN×EXPO 2027 to further strengthen economic relations between the two countries.

3.    The two leaders also concurred to further strengthen cooperation in responding to various international challenges, such as the United Nations Security Council reform.
