A Vietnamese man in his 40s was attacked and had a bag containing about one million yen (US$6,780) stolen by two men believed to be foreigners near Nippori Station in Tokyo.

The victim reported the incident to a police post in front of the station on Monday. He said the two men approached him from behind at around 6 p.m., striking up a conversation as he walked along a nearby street, according to The Mainichi.

When he turned to face them, they grabbed his shoulder bag and repeatedly punched and kicked him.

Despite his attempts to fight back, the assailants continued the assault before fleeing the scene.

The victim suffered serious injuries, including a broken nose. Police from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Arakawa Station are investigating the case as robbery and assault, and are pursuing the suspects, as reported by The Sankei Shimbun.

The victim believes both attackers were foreigners.

Authorities noted that such incidents are extremely rare in Japan, which has a street robbery rate of just 1.2 cases per 100,000 people.

Tokyo is widely considered one of the safest cities in the world, where violent crimes and street robberies are uncommon.
