Artisans of Rural Japan & Lucky Cats 🐾 | Tokoname Walking Tour

Welcome to Tokoname, a historic pottery town in Aichi Prefecture, Japan – also known as the City of Lucky Cats 🐱.

Tokoname is one of Japan’s most famous ceramic towns, part of the “Six Ancient Kilns” of Japan, with a pottery tradition dating back over 900 years. Today, the town is filled with artisan streets, pottery studios, and unique shops, where local craftspeople still create traditional ceramics.

Our walking tour begins at the famous Wall of Lucky Cats, where dozens of Maneki-neko statues are embedded into the bridge wall. From there, we explore Tokoname’s artisan neighborhood, wandering through old narrow streets lined with kilns, pottery shops, and craft stores. Along the way, we visit curious artisan shops and discover more hidden Maneki-neko statues scattered throughout the town.

We finish our journey at Tokoname Station, ready to return to Nagoya – but not before finding even more lucky cats on the way back 🐾.
