Before Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle enters Western theaters, the film has already been dethroned one of the best anime films of the mid-2010s. Your Name, by Makoto Shinkai, has lost its spot as Japan’s highest-grossing film of all time to the latest Demon Slayer film, thus setting the stage for what’s to come once the film arrives in theaters this September.

When Your Name came out in 2016, the feature generated ¥25.17 billion, making it the second-largest gross for a domestic film in the country, behind Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away. But that changed when Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train came out in 2020, dominating the top spot with ¥40.75 billion. As Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle continues its domestic run, it managed to generate over ¥25.78, thus overtaking the 2016 romantic fantasy feature.

Your Name generated over $357 million at the global box office. As of writing, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle has only earned $160 million, but that number is subject to change next month. When Mugen Train took over the Japanese box office, Shinkai reacted to the news on social media, saying that this change in box office records is “healthy” for the entertainment industry.

What Are The Highest-Grossing Japanese Films Worldwide?

While Japanese films are unable to surpass the $1 billion mark, like Inside Out, Frozen, and Avatar, many of them are able to leave a mark at the global box office. Taking on the top spots are Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Train with $507 million, followed by Your Name, Spirited Away’s $395 million, Suzume’s $323 million, and The Boy and the Heron’s $294 million. Meanwhile, anime films have also landed in the top 10, which include The First Slam Dunk, One Piece Film: Red, and Jujutsu Kaisen 0. As of writing, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle sits at #18, between Arrietty and The Wind Rises.

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle has already shattered box office records in Japan. In addition to surpassing Your Name, it has also dethroned Disney’s Frozen, which now sits at #5 on Japan’s all-time box office chart. The film’s next milestone is James Cameron’s Titanic, which earned over ¥27.77 billion in Japan.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle enters theaters on September 12, 2025. However, there will be early screenings on September 9 for Crunchyroll’s Mega or Ultimate Fans. Follow Collider to stay updated.
