An unusual scene appeared at Osaka Castle on the morning of August 13.
S/ NNN Reporter/ A large number of fish are dead in a moat at Osaka Castle. There is a very raw stench.
A visitor made a report to the Osaka Castle park center around 9AM that a large number of fish are dead and that there is a bad smell.
Castle park employee confirmed that over 100 fish were dead in the east outer moat of the castle.
S/ Visitor/ I was surprised.
S/ Visitor/ There was a big fish and I was wondering why.
We spoke to a specialist knowledgeable in fish ecology and microorganisms.
S/ Aiko Nobuyuki, Organism diversity center/ This situation is likely due to lack of oxygen. Fish and microorganisms are using a small amount of oxygen. A lot of oxygen is consumed in the summer. The fish fought for oxygen but there wasn’t enough.
The Osaka Castle park center said it will collect the carcass and conduct a water quality test on August 14.
