Project 47 Ep. #1 | Entering Kagoshima – Coastal Roads, Waterfalls & First Camp
Japan is a unique country made up of 47 prefectures. My goal is to ride them all. This is project 47. [Music] [Applause] It’s windy. All right, folks. Thanks for tuning in. We just entered Kagoshima Prefecture. Oh, man. This is bloody awesome. Look at this view. Okay, so let’s talk a little bit about where we’re going, what we’re doing. We’re here in Kagoshima. So, it’s the most southernly prefecture of the main islands of Japan. Okinawa is actually further south, but we will be going there later. And basically, my route is here. We’re going to start all the way next to Miyazaki and follow the coast for the most part down around the lobster core and up through. Should be a really fun trip. Expect to take about 6 days. Yeah, I just saw a sign that said there’s a waterfall up here somewhere. I got to go find it. So, let’s have a look. I think it’s this way. According to the sign, there’s a good example of a small Japanese village. Super cool. Oh, there’s a cemetery. We go this way. This is technically a road in Japan. Ah, look, there it is. Sweet. That wasn’t far. Let’s go have a look. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] At the entrance to the waterfall was a small shrine. I’m not completely sure about the name, but all the children’s bibs hanging were quite intriguing. It turns out that parents hang their children’s bibs here to pray and hope that they have a healthy and prosperous future. This practice seems to only be found in Kagoshima. [Music] The road peeled out before me as I followed the coastline, catching glimpses of ocean vistas through the trees and small coastal villages, stopping occasionally to relax and enjoy the view of white sanded beaches. From there, the road twisted up into the mountains as I made my way across the peninsula. sweeping corners and hip and turns galore. I must have ridden for hours, but it felt like nothing. I was having way too much fun. While I didn’t make the stop on this journey, there are a couple of spots you should really check out if you’re coming to the region. Ogawa Falls is an incredible waterfall nestled within a valley quite close to the coastline. It’s truly a stunning waterfall and a beautiful place to see. And Cape Sata or Satam Misaki, the southernmost tip of Kyushu. This stunning 360 panoramic vista is well worth taking a moment to enjoy. Plus, the road in is absolutely awesome. I’ve been playing for hours in these mountain roads and it was time to make camp. As the sun was getting low, I needed to find a spot. I had one marked on the maps, but I had no idea what it would be like. Let’s go check it out. [Music] [Music] [Music]
