Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle has taken Japan by storm, becoming one of the country’s biggest box office sensations in record time. The film is currently on course to finish its theatrical run as the highest-grossing film in Japanese box office history, surpassing its franchise predecessor, Mugen Train.
Since opening on July 18, 2025, the film has grossed 25.8 billion yen ($174 million) in just 31 days, with more than 18.27 million tickets sold. That performance has catapulted it into fourth place on Japan’s all-time box office chart, surpassing Disney’s Frozen (25.5 billion yen) and Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name (25.1 billion yen). The only films still ahead are James Cameron’s Titanic (27.7 billion yen), Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away (31.7 billion yen), and Mugen Train (40.7 billion yen).
Within anime, Infinity Castle now ranks as the third-highest-grossing film ever. The movie also set a new speed benchmark, crossing the 10 billion yen milestone in under ten days, breaking the record previously held by, you guessed it, Mugen Train.
Infinity Castle’s success is not limited to Japan. The film debuted at number one across Indonesia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, earning millions in each market during opening weekends. Combined with Japanese earnings, the worldwide box office has already exceeded $200 million. Analysts project the film could ultimately approach 35–40 billion yen ($237-270 million) globally, depending on its legs and upcoming international rollouts.
This release is only the beginning. Infinity Castle is the first of a three-part adaptation of the manga’s climactic arc, directed by Haruo Sotozaki and animated by ufotable. With the next two installments already in development and a North American release scheduled for September 12 from Crunchyroll, the franchise is set to continue its box office dominance.
