Travelling from Kobe to Nara by train | Exploring Japan Train Travel
This time, we would be making our way from Kobe to Nara. The train journey took us from an urban landscape, through the rural countryside, to the spiritual and cultural side of Japan. We had spent the past few days in Kobe. Kobe had a lovely waterfront, charming Western-style houses and Nunobiki falls, one of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls. We also tried some local food and enjoyed the evening scenery of Kobe. Our next destination was Nara, and we headed to Hanshin Railway Sannomiya Station. There were direct trains from Hanshin Railway Sannomiya Station to Kintetsu Nara Station. However, our next hotel was at JR Nara Station. So we had to change trains at Nishi-Kujo Station in Osaka. Our first train would be from Kobe-Sannomiya Station to Nishi-Kujo Station. Trains departing towards Osaka and Nara would be on Platform 2. We would be taking the train towards Kintetsu-Nara at 11:12am. The train arrived at 11:05am and departed from Kobe-Sannomiya Station at 11:12am. This train was a Rapid Express service, and only made stops at selected stations. Train diverted from the Hanshin Main Line after Daimotsu Station and travelled along the Hanshin Namba Line. Entered Osaka Prefecture from Hyogo Prefecture once we crossed the Samondo River. Crossed the Yodo River, which flowed through Osaka and on into Osaka Bay. We disembarked at the next stop, Nishikujo Station. Journey from Kobe-Sannomiya Station took 33 mins. There were elevators so it was convenient even with luggage. We would need to transfer trains to the JR Line at Nishikujo Station, but first we stopped for a short lunch at Nishi-Kujo Station. We tried the Takoyaki Udon. However, as a result of the soup, the crispy outer layer of the Takoyaki had become soft. After that, we purchased train tickets for the train ride to Nara. Our train would depart from Platform 4. The platform also served different trains on different lines such as the Osaka loop line, trains to Nara, Kansai Airport and Wakayama. Trains for the JR Yamatoji Rapid Service started from Osaka Station and terminate at either Nara Station or Kamo Station. This train would terminate at Kamo Station in Kyoto Prefecture, but we would be getting off at Nara Station. Between Osaka Station and Tennoji stations, the train travelled on the JR Osaka Loop Line. Announcement regarding the route and stops of the Yamatoji Rapid Service from Tennoji Station towards Nara and Kamo. The train made stops at Kyuhoji Station, Oji Station, Horyuji Station, Yamato-Koizumi Station and Koriyama Station, before arriving at Nara Station. We would be spending the next 2 nights in Nara. Our hotel was Hotel Piazza, which was just next to JR Nara Station. Twin room with view. Room was well renovated and spacious. View outside the window was Nara Station and some city view. We tried Tenri Ramen, which had broth with a slightly spicy flavour. We headed over to Nara Park later in the evening. It seemed to be fawning season. We headed over to the Todaiji Temple. Reached theNigatsudo Hall, just in time for sunset.
