TOKYO (Kyodo) — Tokyo stocks opened higher Monday, hitting fresh all-time intraday highs, tracking a rise in the U.S. Dow Jones index late last week.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 246.64 points, or 0.57 percent, from Friday to 43,624.95. The broader Topix index was up 12.75 points, or 0.41 percent, at 3,120.43.
On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by precision instrument, pharmaceutical and transportation equipment issues.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 147.21-25 yen compared with 147.14-24 yen in New York and 147.00-02 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Friday.
The euro was quoted at $1.1705-1708 and 172.31-40 yen against $1.1699-1709 and 172.19-29 yen in New York and $1.1682-1683 and 171.73-77 yen in Tokyo late Friday afternoon.
