The PERFECT Day Trip in Nagasaki, Japan!
Welcome to day two of the Kyushu Grand Tour Double Dragons road trip. Day two. We’re in Nagasaki and we are getting on this boat. Taking the tour to Gunganima, which is the battleship island. One of the hot spots to check out Nagasaki here on our grand tour. You can head out also today to a uh wacky theme park, Dutch themed, and supposedly the most famous burger in Nagasaki. The Nagasaki burger. We’re doing all that today. So, welcome to the video, guys. Hope you guys are ready for this day two. [Music] [Music] They’re making Santa Claus look like a thief. [Music] How long is this ride? 30 minutes. Good morning everyone. Welcome to Nagasaki and welcome aboard shipping company. Wow. Battleship. Now we are leaving. Before we go into component, they got battleships on the way to battleship island. [Music] What was the cost of the tour? The two of us 8600. Whoa. That that boat’s going fast. That’s what the heck. It’s a buffalo. Wa. I’ve never seen Wait. So it’s like propellers that are like propelling it off the water. It’s a hydro foil. Hydro what? You’re right. This island used to be a seabed coal mine island. The coal mine was closed in 1986 about 40 years ago. Oh. However, this island was transformed the tanada of Mari Asia and is now famous for its delicious tomatoes. Tomatoes. Tomatoes. Okay. We should have been out here the whole time. [Music] Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, we’re going into Battleship Island right now. There’s no famas, no bathrooms. I’m hungry and I know I’m going to have to take a dumpling in like 2 hours. How do we do an escape from Ken Island? Not even a hot dog stand, guys. Not even a hot dog stand. Wait, there’s fishermen. What in the world? You’re not allowed to wear high heels or sandals. So, they have Crocs for people to borrow and hats for how sunny it is. We need one. Yeah. Do we just take it? Yeah, I think so. You think so? I don’t want to get in trouble. No, it’s fine. Just take one. Yeah, dude. That looks good. How’s it, dude? Your head is small. How’s it feel? building. It’s like a coliseum. His hat’s not staying on my head. We’re the only people that took the hat, dude. They’re they’re reconstructing this island was used as a location for movies such as7 Skyfall and became the setting for animations. So this island is now a very popular tourist site. This is called the number 30 apartment building and this is the most famous building on this island. It was built in 1916, so it’s more than 100 years old. And it’s Japan’s first highrise reinforced concrete building. Even unfortunately, this building began to crumble about 3 years ago. According to the expert, this building might fall down within only half a year. Huh. So, you should take a lot of pictures of this building. expense. The population density of this island at that time was nine times higher than that of Tokyo metropolis and it’s the highest ever recorded worldwide. There are no elevators in those high-rise apartment. So some floors of those buildings have connecting corridors or bridges to the next building just like skyways. So people of this island could go to any other apartment buildings without going down to the ground. Kunganima is an island that long ago Mitsubishi mining company came here because it has seabed coal mines. So it’s a coal mining island. And in like the 70s they abandoned the island because of health issu like health things that are going. It wasn’t safe to be here. They just abandoned it and left it as is. Okay. Okay. and they just didn’t upkeep it. So, it’s been torn away through the years by typhoons and other and they kept it as a world heritage site as like as of like 20 15. But this is a man-made island. This is a man-made island. And the reason they call it Gan Shima is cuz Gungan means battleship and shim means island. It’s cuz why it’s called a battleship. It looks like a battleship. It’s not really a battleship. It’s not designed to be a battleship or look just happens to look like one. Huh. What an interesting design. surrounded by thick concrete walls to protect from the typhoons and the high waves. Wait, wait. That that part doesn’t look man-made, though. Which one? Why would they man make a mountain? No, I don’t. No, I don’t think it’s a man-made island. I think I think So, they built the island around the Yeah, there’s there’s a coal mine here. Okay. So, they built the island like around the coal mine, right? Okay. Does that make sense? Rock and make it expand it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I get it. I get it. Well, they’re fixing it, I guess. Look, there’s even concrete on there. Yeah, they’re restoring the building. I don’t know if there’s a couple more typhoons, it’s going to blow down and they’re going to make more money off of it. Or maybe they’re going to make fima. They get a right here. If they get a f Lima right here, I would come here one more time. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So, the actual island is called Hashima and it was discovered in 1810 and the Saga clan was carrying some small scale mining for a time. However, it’s not until the mine came under the control of Mitsubishi Mining Company in 1890 that the full scale seabed coal mining operation began. So 1890 is when this place really got another another important thing is that the building the building that we saw before behind there was the first in 1960 was the first concrete highrise park building in all of Japan. Even before 10 years before the most famous photos for this island. So you can take pictures here for a minute. Photo spot. Photo spot of this this scaffolding on the lighthouse construction. Okay, Jake’s going to go in with the hard-hitting questions. It’s like vice. Yeah. For the coal mines, who who were like mainly the workers in the coal mines? Was it Japanese people or like other countries or something? Ah except during World War II uh the miners were almost but during during World War II there were about 500 Korean money and 80 Chinese prisoners of war. Okay. Only 80 of them. Yeah. Oh wow. Korea was closer. Yeah. 5,000 Koreans. USA. US. Yeah. USA. USA. Hi. Can I can I give some advice? Is there is there a chance that they can build a fam here on this island? Cuz I’m very hungry, you know, super hungry. Maybe some fam chicky, you know, fam chicky on the road. I think it looks awesome. And the thing is that they kind of left it on purpose to like let it naturally like even though they’re kind of repairing some of it, I think they’re kind of letting it naturally just fall apart. Okay. And from what our Japanese friend, she said that every time there’s like a big taboon come through, it’ll just like look different cuz it’ll be more knocked down and more messed up. Yes. Uh all those apartment buildings and stuff like there’s actually stuff like this unted. Yeah, there might be like teddy bears inside. Yeah. Teddy like that kind of stuff. So I think there might be some videos online you can find of that. Handcuffs. Um toilet paper. This is a world heritage site. Very cool. But this is just one more stop on the Nagasaki adventure day part of our Kuzu Grand Tour. Yes. surprisingly very quick. The boat ride is longer. Yeah. So, you got to take a 40-minute boat ride. It cost about $30 per person. 40-minute boat ride, you get about an hour on the island and 40-minute boat ride back. Yes. Look at the island. Yeah, definitely. Yeah, you get a video of us. [Music] [Music] It looks dude. This is like a Tinder profile picture for this guy. Looks looks beautiful on my screen. He’s got like the halo effect. Looks good. He looks great. Next. Waiting. I’m waiting. Wait. What the heck? So, that was before the typhoon. Look at the helicopter. This is after. Oh, it didn’t look that bad. [Music] There’s the 100 100y old thing. [Music] They give you a piece here says I survived. This is the landing certificate. Landing certificate. Aho. [Music] Thank you. I got the laser. Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you. Also go 1:00. You go 1:00, you go again. That’s right. A dang. Every day. All day. Every day. Thank you. If you guys are enjoying the Kyushu Grand Tour so far, don’t forget to like the video. Just make sure you’re subscribed. We’re almost at a million. And comment something great. Comment this. Have you ever heard of Kyushu? And if not, after this video, you will know everything you need to know. Well, not everything. Just a little bit. So yeah, one of the special foods here in Nagasaki is called Chong or Champion Champong. So I’m going to order the Nagasaki Champong. This guy has pork and a bunch of veggies and uh different seafoods. I think I want this one. You want that? I don’t trust this one. That has like crispy noodles. I want that. I want that. And then we should get this too. The the the the mandu. The the gyoza. The gyoza. $7 each. So Chad, this is our Nagasaki Champon. Yeah. Champion, whatever you want to call it. So, some sushi broth, some noodles, some veggie. Does smell good. Bunch of seafood in there. Pork, and then cook like a dry noodle one on top of some I don’t know what it is. Looks like Hong Kong food. Yeah, I like that kind of noodle, dude. Even these noodles very Chinese. Very style. Does it have a smoky taste to it? They’re good. It’s not too seafoody. What do you rate that out of 10? Jumbo, would you eat them again? I give it a 6 out of 10. Wa, which is not bad, but there’s 30 other Japanese things I would rather eat. Also, my uh polarized eyeglasses. Jesus, wrong country. No, Japan cross your hand up in the air to let the cars know you’re coming. I didn’t know that. It’s going to be for kids so they can see higher. Yeah, but I just had a funny habit. Wait, kid drivers? No, it’s for kids that are cross. Oh, so the drivers can see the kids. Oh, so kids are taught at a young age in Japan to put their hand up when they cross the street to like signal that they’re crossing. So they do it until their old age. I mean, you’ll see some people do it, but that’s cute. Wait, what is this film? That’s cool. That’s an old craft. Whoa. Oh, cook. I’m leaving. Whoa. Howdy, partner. There you go, baby. We’re headed to the Peace Park of Nagasaki. And this is a park that is here to promote peace after the atom bomb was dropped here. Oh, yeah. We’re going close to the atomic bomb museum. Yeah, it’s right here. Uh, I thought we’d just come and pay some pay some respects and share a little bit of share a little bit of messaging. love and peace. Yeah. Uh at a place that experienced some uh absolute tra, you know, tragedy. So, all right. Well, who is that guy? I know. I’m not too sure, but this is Peace Park, baby. That’s a peace statue. That’s the peace statue. Statue surrounded by a pool and the site of an annual peace prayer ceremony. We are here now at the Nagasaki um peace park. So, there’s like different statues or monuments here. There’s also the hypo center or things like the kind of like the ground zero of the uh bomb that’s a little over the south of here. And I just came for a moment just to like pay a little bit of respect for crazy craziness that happened a long time ago. I mean, they’re singing some maybe some songs of peace. This is a very uh I mean, all the actually, this is crazy. All the kids are here, but a lot of presidents have come here as far as this entire thing is in the World Park. Oh. means. Oh, no. I just heard you like trying to Oh, sorry. No, not yet. Not yet. Okay. Yeah. No, that’s okay. I don’t mind. I just was a bit like, what are you doing? No, no, no, no, no. I was just adjusting the sound. So, apparently the sculptor said it’s pointing to the sky for the atomic bomb and to the side of the piece. That’s why it’s shake. Oh, and then this tower was constructed specifically to house the garlands of handfolded cranes. Beautifully poignant inside. It seems to symbolize the new color springing up from the ashes of destru destruction. Where are you guys from? I’m from US LA. Oh, cool. Whereabouts in LA? Korea Town. Korea Town. Are you Korean? Uh, my parents are. Yeah. Oh, I just came from South Korea. Oh, really? Yeah. Was that you have a good time? Yeah, I loved it. Could you hold them? Sure. Um and um so yeah, and then I’ll go to Tokyo and I’ll probably spend like at least at least a week in Tokyo. What about you guys? Where have you guys been? Wow. We’re just started our YouTube tour. We have a car though. Uh nice. We’re going to go to Oh, yeah. Sorry. It’s just I’m just like a good one. Feel really weird talking to you like You’re good. You’re good. Uh we dated in high school. Oh, we just knew each other. I’m just kidding. All right. I was I was fantasizing about it though. That is not what you’ve always wanted. Dreams come true straight and I’ve known since I was 18 and we have backpacked all over the world. Had such great times and we were in Croatia and we ended up accidentally booking this like beautiful place like infinity pool, you know, really really romantic but it had a double bed to share and it was like it really felt like went to bed and I was like 18 years. No way. No like she’s like my sister. But it could have been spicy. But it was just I just joked with her. Pleasure. Me Amy. That’s cool. I want one of these yellow hats. Hey. Hello. Hey. What’s up, buddy? How are you? Let’s go. Hello. I want I want one of those bushies. Was that kid? He’s wearing really tight pants. You have the shorts. Hello. How are you? How are you? How are you? Oh my gosh, that is Look at the picture. On August 9th, I was 14 years old and working at the Mitsubishi Arms Ohashi factory. It was 1 kilometer north of the hyperson. Wa. That time boss ordered the process parks and at 11:02 when he moved to another technical building, the atom bomb exploded. I was in the shadow of a large pillar that blocked the heat rays and blast, but I was blown into a large refrigerator about 14 m away and miraculously survived. Wa. It’s like Indiana Jones. Of the 32 workers, only one colleague and I survived. My boss was killed instantly. Holy crap, dude. Wa. This was it. Yeah. Do you Did you feel the shift in the air? Am I Am I being paranoid? But I feel like the air the air is different. Yeah, you are like breathing. Really? Black monolith there is 500 m above that. It’s 500 m above that is where it was floated in the air. So half a kilometer up. Yeah. was 500 m 500 m though 1/3 of Nagasaki city was destroyed and 150,000 people are killed or injured this photo was taken in a month after that’s a month after ground level at the time of the atomic bombing 60 m and now we’re heading to a place called Pinbush I don’t know some Dutch theme park up north we’re going we’re on the way was that on Was that on Tanuki’s list She said she used to go there as a kid with her grandpa and uh we have to go. It’s really wacky. She said really they are they are they are they are they told to do that? I don’t know. They’re really nice. Nice little mountain ride. Yo, I dare you to drift all the way up there. Oh, gas. I’m going to step on the gas. This guy’s crazy. Wo, beautiful. This kind of reminds me of America, actually, right? Yeah. Just just very Japanese buildings. Reminds me of Big Bear. It feels like Big Bear. Yeah. Kind of. Kind of. Like a little lake city. Kind of. Kind of. Like the trees and the geography looks very similar. Very big bearesque right now. Yeah. Very Japanese buildings. What a nice cute drive. It’s a very nice drive. Yeah. Wa! Where are we? Is this it right there? I think it’s the entrance. What’s that? Welcome to the next part of today’s adventure outside of Nagasaki. We’re at a place called Holen Bush, which is a It’s designed to mimic a Dutch village. It’s a theme park that offers rides and imitations of famous attractions. Yeah, this place looks wacky and wild. There’s a bunch of Dutch influence out here in the Nagasaki area. We’re about an hour north at B uh we’re at at House Henbush Hoist Bush. Henbush. I don’t know. That sounds German. They got Christmas music from all the hotels. No way. There’s got to be an entrance somewhere. Hotels, restaurants. There is a I saw a picture of a ferris ferris. Oh, entrance gates. Oh. Oh my god. Like it’s like right like around the loop. Was that called the loop? Yeah. Like it really does have that vibe right here. It kind of right. It does. It needs more bicycles. Elevator. Elevator. I don’t think we did Denmark once. Yo, we got internet in the elevator, bro. Elevator. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. The car looks so small. Yeah, this looks beautiful. I like What the heck? Somebody’s foreheads right here. Yeah, I don’t think we need to see all people living over there in that little maybe maybe some like you know there’s like weebs for everything. There’s you know Japan’s like weebs literally Dutch mania like in their super retail yachts. Look at their fishing boats dude. That’s for sure. That’s cool. The Dutch weebs. You know what? Chocolate curry with sprinkled chocolate. That is crazy. You guys did this. Thanks a lot. Small reach. And we’re now going to try the chocolate curry with chocolate sprinkles on top. Chocolate curry sold out. No way. Oh my god. The other one has chocolate curry with braced pork. That’s even worse. Should we get that one? Brazed pork. We have to, right? Yeah, we got to Oh. Oh, okay. Okay. Wait, is that all the chocolate that came out of all that grinding? Wait, what? [Music] She grinded that for like 5 minutes and that’s all that came out. Okay. M. Chocolate curry. This is something I use in my No pork. Chocolate curry. No. Hey, no pork first. No pork first. Okay. What? I like it. Chocolate curry. Round one. My opinion, honestly, the pork’s pretty good. The pork’s a good texture. M I think that this chocolate curry tastes like literally just regular ass curry with some chocolate sauce inside. It doesn’t really create a unique flavor that like is umami necessarily. It just has like curry and then like a little bit of chocolate aftertaste. Little bit very creamy though. Yeah, cuz of the chocolate, but it it definitely is more cur it’s like 80% curry flavor. 20% chocolate. Here’s the thing. That’s what I thought too. My first my first few bites. Oh, it’s getting worse after Yeah. That’s why I was like That’s why I was like, “It’s not bad cuz it’s like curry with chocolate in it.” But the more you eat it, the more it’s like actual chocolatey. It’s weird with the with the with that curry inside. That tastes like garbage, man. I don’t hate it. Do you taste it in the back of your throat? Yeah. I’m good. I think I think it’s like the effect of the salt the sweet and savory. Like the sweetness of the chocolate is bringing out the saltiness of the curry, but the saltiness of the curries bringing out the sweetness of the chocolate. So, it’s kind of a it’s an interesting try, but it’s it’s like a never again thing. Yeah. Rank out of 10. I’m going to say a two out of 10 for me. Two out of 10. Uh four. That’s crazy. Like if I was hungry, I’m like and it’s there in front of me. I’m not going to say. If it was a two, I’d be like, “Don’t even put that in my face.” Okay. Like, I I’d rather starve. If I’m starving, I’m like, “Okay, I’ll eat it. I’m not going to like it. It’s not the worst thing in the world.” I think I think it’s three. Wo! This is going to light up at night. Wa! That looks awesome. [Music] Yeah, it’s like a Mordor. You can only just do it here. Okay, then you go. Oh, okay. I go and then you go after. There he is. There he is. How was it? How was it? I’m not going to lie, that was terrifying. Really? You know why? Huh? Oh. Oh, because Yeah, you’re I almost hit a tree and two poles. No way. Long legs. Goes like this. Is it because you’re heavy? I almost died. Jeez, that was terrifying. Because it’s just swinging and literally like you’re about to hit a tree the whole time. I’ll let you guys uh see Cook when he’s uh about to hit a tree. Dude, I’m telling you guys, it swings really big. I think this place is used for like smaller I think this place is used to smaller like kids and people that weigh less than me and Cook doing this and Cook weighs more than me. It does like this crazy swinging left and right. Literally, you almost hit the tree in the pole every time. You can hear him. Thank you, Sarah. Cook is doing a very scary zipline right now. You can hear him. Listen. Listen, [Music] I think he hit this Thank you. Okay. How did you feel? That was rough. Did you almost hit the tree? I almost hit the pool many times. Yeah. And you’re big. I feel fat. Okay. Okay. Autograph. Wow. YouTube channel YouTube. Oh, here it YouTube and cook Jake. Hi. Hi. Hi. Oh, you seen my She says she’s seen my face before. Oh, you’ve seen his face. Ah. Maybe Tango Man. I don’t know. Could be. Could be. Okay, dude. That Oh my god. I felt like I was going to hit the pole every time. I know. I know. Is it because I’m just fat? Yeah. [Music] Guys, that’s the end of Housein Bush. Yeah, I don’t know how to say it exactly. I keep messing up the entire Bush. Hope you guys enjoyed a little bit of the Yeah. Dutch theme land. Yeah, that was fun. Anyways, interesting. Yeah. Best I can say, dude. We we we did a lot here. We had some choco curry. We got on a carousel. We saw the view from the top of the tower. Saw some Santa Clauses. It was interesting. Yeah, we we did some ziplining. Almost lost our legs. Almost lost our legs. All right, guys. We’re going to Saso Burger Big Man Kami Kyomachi main store. This is it. That’s what it looks like. I like it. It’s cute. It’s got a It’s got an icon iconic mascot. has like this elephant mascot. Um, I was recommended this by a lot of people who said it’s like the best burger in Nagasaki, but I don’t think it’s going to be like that. I don’t know. We’re We’re gonna see. All right, guys. We’re here at Big Man Sasha Burger. You might be wondering, what the hell is that? I don’t know. All I know is that Japanese friend recommended it. It’s the best burger in Nagasaki area. We’re here. We’re going to try it out. Listen, we travel the world try to eat the best burgers in the world. This is the uh alleged best of Nagasaki. Okay. Wait, look at this. What the heck? Bro, why does it look like that? That looks like a Dragon Quest character. What is that, dude? Oh, they got sandwiches. Su Burger King. Onion rings. What’s the difference? Oh, you’re doing Burger King. Yeah. That’s a big piece of pork belly, dude. Cooked crazy. I got there like mayonnaise. I just ripped I just ripped that I ripped the ham. But this is chalk full of veg. All right, I’m going to go for the mic. Okay, let me see. Look at that steam coming off of there, dude. Well, you got the crazy patty. I got the reminds me bacon, egg, cheese, mayonnaise, lettuce. Little bit of mustard. I mean, this is crazy. There it is, guys. The Sassibo special burger. The mayo in the burger is insane. It’s a lot. It’s a lot of mayo, but is it’s insane. All right, here we go. There’s not much meat on here, though, but look at the meat patty compared to the bread. It’s tiny. Look at the size of the meat patty compared to the bread. It’s like doesn’t even feel it. Half of it. To be honest, the meat patty could be could be better. I need a double. Give me a double. Like a dog meat patty. Nope. Oh, that bite, it’s kind of porky, actually. That bite I just took had no meat inside. Yeah, there’s a lot of that. My feeling about this so far, actually, I like the flavors that are going on in here. I actually like the bun. I like the style of burger. I think it’s a little bit too much some stuff, a little bit too much meat, a little bit too thick here. And the biggest concern I’m having so far is the meat. The toasted bun is awesome. The lack of meat is a problem. I just took another bite, a big bite, and then I just got to the meat. This is the end of the patty, guys. I’m going to be honest with you. I don’t need to change my burger. Give my review. I like this burger. I do like it, but it does have some things that easily are improved. Crispify the bacon. No, none of this is half ham. And two, meat size bigger. If the bacon was crispy, cooked a little longer, and the meat was bigger, just covered the circumference, it would take this burger from what I’m going to call a seven out of 10. I think it I think it might take it to an 8.3. Wo, that’s high. For me, seven’s good. Eight is great. Nine is like, holy, round it up to seven. But I’m happy we came. We have to experience some of Yeah. Sedo’s famous burger culture, which we’re burger connoisseurs at this point. I didn’t hate it. Unofficial. I didn’t hate it. for the both of us. This cost almost 4,000 yen. Only beef, guys. It’s a beef patty, which is interesting cuz I don’t know what type of beef is. We’re going to go ahead and give that one a 7 out of 10. It’s worth the try if you’re around. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I like that. I really like that mayo. The main reason you want to go to that chat is because when I travel places, it’s always fun to try something that’s very local. So now if you ever meet someone from Nagasaki, you be like, “Oh yeah, I had I had Sas Big Ben.” Oh, what? How do you know that? It’s very like local thing. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That’s super local. The adventure continues. The Kyushu ultimate Kushu Grand Tour Road Trip Double Dragons Adventure will continue tomorrow from Kumamoto. So stay tuned.
Day 2 of the Kyushu road trip! We’re in Nagasaki where we’re exploring all kinds of things for the perfect travel day! Hope you like the video!
