Finally a Clear View !
Much nicer day than yesterday. Going to climb today. This is my ride. He’s nice enough to give me a ride down the road to the train station. About 10 minutes. Leg one done. I’m now at Kagoshima again heading up to Kumamoto. This train takes about just under an hour. I’m in a reserved car even though I have a non-reserved seat, but the train is empty. And we’re off and I am on my way to rent a car. Got it for 3 days and about 170 bucks. All right, got myself uh some kind of a wagon. Right now, I’m going to try and find a uh sports store and see if I can pick myself up some new hikers and then uh we’ll head out into the mountains. All right, I’m staying here for a couple nights. Tiny little desk and a little barbecue area out back. Cute little place. Has a free washer. Maybe I’ll actually throw my stuff in and do a wash. Crap shoot at the bakery. I thought I was buying a donut. Some weird bread thing with a gross sausagey. Definitely not a hot dog inside. It’s not very good. All right, just getting myself organized. Used the laundry machine and now just drying everything. We’ll get up uh maybe between 7ish, somewhere around 7ish, and start hiking. Supposed to be a nice day tomorrow, but then the next day is supposed to be pouring. 99% chance of rain. And that’s the day I wanted to go to the gorge. So, we’ll see if it’s like actual rain or just like 99% chance of some rain somewhere. We’ll see you guys in the morning. Morning from Masso. Here is the back of the guest house and my little meat meat. Pretty nice place. But, uh just like uh the other night where I slept on the floor, this time I’m on a bunk bed, but they have the same mattress. So, it’s super thin, so your hips are constantly digging into the wood whenever you’re rolling over or anything. So, they need a bit of a thicker mattress. Anyways, got to make a pit stop at the 7-Eleven to get some breakfast. Nothing else is around and grab something for a snack for the trail. And I think it’s about a 10 or 12k loop that goes up and around the volcano. At least it’ll be a better view than I had the other day on Mount Takio. And also uh today I’m going to try out my new purchase, my new Merrills. We’ll see. I’ve had two pairs of the Arcterics. I really like them. They’re uh definitely comfortable and I definitely know I’ll be buying those again when I get home. But uh these ones feel okay, but you never know until you’re actually out on the trail. Aso Mountain, although I’m not sure which one of these is Aso. So, the route will go up and around and I think we come back down the other side. Let’s go escape some lava. Okay, the trail I wanted to take is actually closed. So, I’m not sure how this loop works. Supposed to go up to the left and around. I’ll end up somewhere. There’s a road you can take. You can actually drive up to the lookout point. Hopefully, this hike isn’t a lot shorter than I thought. All right, that’s Mount Takadaki over there. About 3 and 1/2 km, and that is the goal. I took this trail to work around the boardwalk there, but all this trail did was loop me around this hill and then it’s going to take me right back to the boardwalk. So, bit of a waste of time. This crater floor from all the lava over the thousands of years spewing is definitely a Mars landscape. So far, the uh new hikers are doing okay. There was a little pressure spot on my right foot in the store that I was a bit concerned about, but I was hoping that it would soften up as they get broken in. So far, it hasn’t been an issue. We’ll see when I get to the top if I have the same feelings about them. All right. Have to get up that rock face. This is why I prefer hiking in the forest cuz in the forest, even though, you know, you might have to climb that high, you can’t actually see the top. So, you don’t know how far you have to go. This whole way up that rock face, I’ll know exactly how far I am. And that’s not even the top. Takadaki is behind that. Where’s Dawa? I want Dawa to carry my bag for me. At least I’m not at 4,000 m. I think Takadaki is 1500 meters. All right, we’re not far off from that peak at all. And coming up from down there wasn’t bad at all. All that Nepal training has really paid off. There’s the angry Mount Aso volcano right down there. I am now on Minimadaki Peak, 1496 m. And I have to go along the ridge line and get up there to Takadaki, the second to last peak, Mount Nakadaki. Somebody put the crater out. They dropped a water bomber on it or something. Here it is. Mount Takadaki. 1,592 m and it’s clear. All right, a little snack and then going to head down there and try to get a look out of the volcano. And the original trail goes around the back side that was closed. I think I’m still going to go around try and make my way out from there. Towers along there. So sometime in the past there was uh some kind of gondola that brought you up here. Heat. Heat. And we’re back. Made it. It was easy. A little bit of sulfur gas blowing my face from the volcano, but I managed to survive. And now I think I’ve earned a well-deserved ice cream. Good stormy morning. It’s a little bit sprinkly right now. Rained all night. It’s been super windy. And it shows 100% chance of rain all day. So, luckily I have the wheels. I’m going to take a drive to Teachio Gorge and uh hopefully the weather improves and maybe wander around there. You can uh rent rowboats in the gorge, but I don’t think today’s a boat rental kind of day. Anyways, take a drive and uh have a look see around and see what it’s like. I got one more day with the car. Got to give it back tomorrow. All right, let’s hit the road. All right, here’s Takio Gorge parking lot. Super rainy. There’s a peek-a-oo view of the gorge. Five bucks to park. Let’s go see what there is in the rain. And here is some of the gourd. And here’s where you can pay $50 to rent a rowboat to go into the gourd. I have to navigate this maze of umbrellas. Can I do it and survive? That’s basically it for the gorge with crappy weather. It’s not worth renting a $50 boat anyways. It wasn’t that long. But uh I’ll head up into town and find a bakery and coffee shop. It’s just absolutely torrential out. I’ve booked myself a room in Kumamoto. It’s about an hour and a bit drive to get there. And uh it is 2:00 and maybe the weather’s better there. There’s my little room that I got for 50 bucks. This is my view with my little meat meep for one more day. I return it tomorrow. It’s fine. Seems about to go right. Shared bathroom. About a kilometer walk to get to a kind of shopping restauranty area in the pouring rain. It’s not keeping my legs dry though, so my jacket would pretty much do the same thing. It’s a big covered arcade. Pachinko and slot machines. It’s full of restrooms as well. It’s 9:00. Supposed to stop sometime tonight. thunder and lightning even too. We’ll see you guys in the morning. Just returning the car. I’ve got a bunch of different trains that I got to get to and then a ferry cuz I’m trying to get over to Cat Island. But right now, I’m going to wander over to the train station. Welcome to Usuki. And this is who I’m greeted by. Uh everything worked out perfect. Got to this train station in Hakata and I had 10 minutes and ran through this massive station running around and somehow managed to find the platform with the right train. And then I had 3 minutes when I got off this train to get here. And the train was right there, right off the platform. So, on to one and off to the other. So, it all worked out perfect. Now, I’ve got a couple hours before the ferry uh to Yawatama. And I think that’s where I’ll spend the night. And then I got to take like a 5:00 a.m. bus to get up to the ferry, which is going to take me to the Cat Island. Because uh this country is so safe, I’m willing to risk my backpack on top of the noodle machine while I uh try and find something to eat. I’ve got an hour and a half or so, so I think I passed a grocery store not far off. Here is the ruins of the Usuki Castle. Oh, there’s actually something here. This is the Itonoguchi Man Waki Yagura three-story building built in the Ido period. It’s been rebuilt several times and this last one was built in 1854. It’s like a cross between polo and old person golf. And back on land. Welcome to Ya Watahama Port. Got about a kilometer walk to my hotel. Oh, it’s like a motorcycle with like a side car and a trailer. That is me. The super hotel. I’m a little disappointed it’s not the super duper hotel. I am 36.3° apparently. This is a decent place. Too bad I have to leave at like 5:00 in the morning. Just hit the onen communal shower and spa. Basically a hot pool, a hot tub without the jets where I shaved with a shitty razor and been bleeding for half an hour. Also went to the grocery store, picked up some guozas and a smorggas board of stuff. And I picked up a bunch of snacks for the island tomorrow. Aashima Island, the right one this time. So, I got to leave at like 5:00 a.m. because the ferry leaves at 8:00 and I’m about an hour away. The first train gets you there at 6:30, but then the next train gets you there after 8:00. So, I got to leave super early and I miss the hotel breakfast. I’m going to wait for my face to stop bleeding, go heat up my food, and then uh that’s about it. We’ll see you guys in the morning.
I climb Mt Takadake and explore Aso Volcano. I get rained out at Takachiho Gorge, spend the night in Kumamoto and move on to try and make it to cat island

Japan: Magical landscapes are what come to mind. And so clean! Even the commercial docks are clean. Amazing. You found real beauty on trails and at the gorge. The people seem reserved but friendly when a giant gaijin appears among them wearing shorts and a backpack. Mt. Aso has a long and violent eruptive history, including recent episodes that damaged the gondola system. No wonder few plants colonize the denuded crater slopes and rim, it blew ash out just a few years ago. No "pushers" or "packers" wearing white gloves on your train stations (and no crowds). That is quite unexpected for me, but this isn't Tokyo, so it makes sense. Isn't meal time interesting, you never quite know what you've ordered until the first bite. Cute blue car, yet you had enough headroom and legroom. Thanks for your insights.
