He saw his friend struggling with a bear. He said he tried to drive away the bear, but it kept pulling his friend forcefully toward the forest and dragged him away. Mount Rausu is a scenic spot on the Shirtoko Peninsula, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. It attracts many hikers in the summer. It’s also a habitat for brown bears. From May this year to August 9th, there were 82 reported sightings in the area. Recently, there have been multiple reports of brown bears approaching hikers at close range. On August 10th, a bear came within about 3 m of a hiker. On Tuesday, a hiker sprayed a bear with bear repellent, but says the animal continued to follow. This month, there have also been frequent brown bear sightings across Hokkaido and some cases of people being attacked. In April in Bibai City, a man who was calling deer was injured. Last month in Fukushima town, a newspaper delivery man was killed. The Shiratoco Nature Foundation, which works to protect and manage wildlife on the peninsula, strongly recommends carrying bear spray when entering the mountains. It also advises hikers who encounter bears up close to slowly move away without turning their backs. Please be careful when entering mountain areas.
Police in Japan’s northern prefecture of Hokkaido say they received a report on Thursday that a climber had been attacked by a bear on Mount Rausu. A man called the police at around 11:10 a.m., saying a bear had attacked his friend and dragged him away.
The caller has reportedly since been rescued. The police say the condition of his friend remains unknown. Both climbers are in their 20s.
The 1,661-meter mountain is on the Shiretoko Peninsula in eastern Hokkaido, and is a known habitat for brown bears.
They say they have been searching from the air for the climber who was attacked.
