Shureimon Gate – Okinawa’s Iconic Welcome to Shuri Castle (1980s Footage)” 守礼門 – 沖縄・首里城の象徴(1980年代映像)

Heat. [Music] [Applause] Heat. [Applause] Hey Tom Dave N. [Applause] I guess it was at one time off, but [Applause] this is quite the place, huh, David? What? Just a pond. I wonder if it gets filled in more water during the other time of the year. You think? Probably. [Music] [Applause] Dave, come here. I think so. By that, this should be Well, if it is, it’s really out of proportion on that map. It seems like it should be sitting back over here. Unless this is number seven, but that see what we got here. This is the first gate of Sherry Castle proper. It was built into the wall. There they are in front of Shirley Castle. The two decades, as if it was their own playhouse, they bound down the stairway. David oblivious to his surroundings. Of course, he’s oblivious just about all the time. Get an idea of how steep that wall is. Certainly uh on a rainy day with all that growth up there, make it slick as you know what to try to climb up there. And where did Judy go? He’s way up there already. That was the main gate. [Applause] And look at that. Would you look at that um ancient telephone stand over there? Oh yeah. Oh yeah. I need I think we need to have an aento. stand right here. This is This is where I was going. It’s just about the right size. Yeah. On the top here. Wait. Right here. [Applause] I wonder what this was for. I don’t know. Maybe was part of a storehouse or something. Little bany, buddy. Back. Yeah. Okay. Here. Go ahead. Holy smokes. Almost got me. Come on down. I’m going to go look over here, Dad. Okay. Yeah. This is kind of down at the bottom. Let’s [Applause] [Music] take a look at this the scenery here. It’s an unusual sight, Okanawa, to have nobody knocking you down and have a pleasant picturesque scene here with water and ducks. Guy catching a few Z’s. He’s got the right idea. I think [Music] you can see February. You don’t need too much on here. [Applause] Just grab my sunglasses. [Applause] [Applause] [Music] There we are back out to this little bridge again. This castle was built in the 13th century. That right Castle. Did that mean 1200? That’s right. And then it was expanded in 1428 when they moved the castle here. Then they turned it into a mall in 1836. And then they destroyed it in about 3 months in 1945. The hall down, huh? Well, that’s a shame. I guess they knew it was a headquartered site, huh?

Step back in time to the 1980s and experience the beauty of Shureimon Gate (守礼門), one of Okinawa’s most iconic landmarks. Located at the entrance to Shurijo Castle in Naha, this Ryukyuan-style gate has welcomed visitors for centuries with the words “Land of Propriety” (守禮之邦) written above.

In this rare vintage footage, you’ll see the gate as it appeared before the complete restoration of Shurijo Castle in the 1990s, along with a glimpse of traditional Ryukyuan attire and the lush surroundings of the castle grounds.

Shureimon Facts:
• Originally built in the 16th century during the Ryukyu Kingdom
• Destroyed in WWII, rebuilt in 1958
• Recognized as an Important Cultural Property of Japan
• Symbolizes Okinawa’s hospitality and cultural heritage
