Sensoji Temple Isn’t What you Expect !
Hey travelers, welcome back to Wonderas Trails. Today we are here in Tokyo, Japan visiting one of the most famous spots, the Sinsuchi Temple in Asakusa. [Music] We took the metro to Asakusa. If you have a Suika card, it’s super easy. You can buy the Suika card at the airport when you arrive in Japan and even you can add it to your Apple wallet through the transit cards. We just open Google Maps, followed the way and here we are. Trains are everywhere, so getting around in Tokyo is very easy. So, this is our very first time at Sajji Temple. We came around 8:00 in the morning and it’s already busy. This is called Kamarimon gate and also called as thunder gate. It has a giant red paper lantern and on each side you will see statues of the gods of wind and thunder. Walking under this lantern feels like the real start of the temple journey. As soon as you pass Kaminarimon, you step into Nakamizedi, a long shopping street leading to the temple. This street is about 250 m long and is full of little shops, food stalls, and colorful displays. I have always dreamed of walking here. [Music] On both sides there are swia shops, chopsticks, lucky charms and so many cute items. The smell of fresh Japanese snacks is everywhere. Mochi, dango, sweet cakes. You can even taste some samples before you buy it. It’s a bit crowded, but that’s the charm. Everyone’s excited, just like us. We came in March, so it’s still chilly. Some people are wearing kimonos for the photos, but I decided to save it for my kimono experience for Kyoto. So today it’s just me in layers walking and enjoying the street vibes. [Music] Heat. Heat. Before [Music] we even reached the temple, we saw something that made my day. Sakura, it’s March, so the cherry blossoms are just starting to bloom. I didn’t expect to see a tree full of flowers so early, but there it was, pink and perfect. If this whole street was full of Sakura, I can only imagine how breathtaking it would be. [Music] So after the shopping street, you will see the second big gate called Hosommon gate. It’s huge with another big lantern and giant straw sandals hanging on the back. These sandals are called and they are meant to protect the temple. [Music] Before going inside, we tried something fun. The Omi Koji Fortune. [Music] Here’s how we did it. Put a 100 yen coin in the slot. Make a wish. Shake the silver box until a wooden stick comes out. Look at the number on your stick. Find the drawer with the same number. Open it and take out the paper inside. If it’s good luck, keep it with you. If it’s bad luck, tie it on the strings at the temple and leave the bad luck here. It’s a small tradition, but so much fun to try. Before you’re entering the main hall, there’s a water area called chazuya. You take a ladle, wash your hands, and rinse your mouth. This is to purify yourself before praying. [Music] We also lit incense at the big incense burner in front of the temple. You place your incense then wave the smoke towards yourself. It’s believed to bring good health to you. The smell is so calming. [Music] The main hall called Hondo. People drop coins, bow, and say a short prayer. The temple honors Conan, the goddess of mercy. [Music] Her statue is kept hidden, but you can still feel the peace here. [Music] Inside there are lucky charms for health, happiness, and safety. I bought a bracelet for luck. It’s a special reminder of this special place. [Music] Next to the main hall is the beautiful fivetoried pagoda. It’s so striking against the sky and it’s one of the best photo spots here. Such a temple is busy but it still feels calm in its own way. If you visit, come early, enjoy the food, take your time with the shops and soak in the culture.
