HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – One of Hawaii’s largest Okinawan celebrations is almost here.
The 43rd Okinawan Festival will feature performances of Okinawan dance, karate, taiko and music by local groups and special guests from Okinawa.
Local food favorites, Okinawa soba, bento, andagi and andadog and more, will be available.
Guests can also enjoy cultural education, arts and crafts, historical exhibits, genealogy research, and Okinawan-themed children’s games.
The festival takes place Saturday, Aug. 30, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 31, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Hawaii Convention Center.
This year’s theme is “Sharing Uchinanchu Aloha.”
On Saturday night, the event is hosting Hawaii’s largest indoor bon dance from 5:30-9 p.m.
The event marks two milestones: the 125th anniversary of Okinawan immigration to Hawaii and the 40th anniversary of the sister-state relationship between Hawaii and Okinawa.
