On the 12th, Nippon-Ham Fighters manager Tsuyoshi Shinjo (53) expressed his desire to win both championships with his alma mater, Nishinippon Junior College, which will be competing in the summer Koshien. His alma mater came from behind win their first game against Hirosaki Gakuin Seiai on the 9th after an extra inning-innings tiebreaker. After the game, captain Yamashita declared, “I want to win both championships with Nippon-Ham,” to which Shinjo replied, “That’s great. If The Fighters win, I’ll bring the championship flag to Yame,” promising a triumphant return to Yame, Fukuoka, where his school is located.

Last year, he rushed to Koshien to cheer on his alma mater, but this year there are no games in the Kansai region during the tournament, so he said he has no plans to watch a game at the moment. Still, he didn’t rule out the possibility of rushing to the stadium to watch a big game where their first championship since 1992 is at stake, saying, “If the timing is right, like in the finals.”

Their team suffered three straight losses in a three-game series against the leading Softbank in the battle for the top spot. With the gap now at four games, they flew back to Sapporo that day. Starting on the 13th, they will face off against Lotte at the ESCON. “The battle is still ahead. We can’t let them get away if we don’t want to dampen the excitement of professional baseball.” With 40 games remaining, Shinjo Ham will pull off a major comeback like their alma mater and grab the championship flag.
