Many people visited their family graves during the annual Bon holidays on Wednesday in the southwestern Japanese city of Kirishima, which was devastated by torrential rain.
They cleaned up around the graves and offered flowers, as the temperature exceeded 30 degrees Celsius already in the morning.
Restoration work has continued in the city after the recent record rainfall caused extensive damage. Extreme weather prompted the Meteorological Agency to issue a heavy rain emergency warning on Friday. About 400 houses were flooded.
A woman in her 70s from the city said she was worried about the impact of the heavy rain because the grave she visited is located near a cliff. She said she was relieved that she was able to visit there.
A man in his 60s from a neighboring prefecture said he had come by car after checking in advance to make sure there were no road closures. He added that he was relieved that there was no damage to the grave.
