🇯🇵Japan Food Tour: Night Food Adventures in Snowy Hokkaido | Japanese Culinary Journey”

Good morning everyone. I’m Kawaii. Welcome to the Koi Lang channel. I’m in Japan. This is the Tokyo International Airport and I’m about to board the next flight to Saporro City. I had planned to film when I arrived at the hotel in Saporro. I don’t even know why, but I suddenly felt like grabbing the camera and filming right away. This time, I’ve got my bros with me on this trip. We’ll have a few days to enjoy the snow. The temperature in Saporro is around -7 to – 10° C, sometimes even lower. So, there’ll be plenty of thick snow for us to enjoy in Japan. Right now, I’m going to get in line to board the connecting flight to Saporro. Wait for me. [Music] The flight has just landed. Because I’m sitting in the 47th row, the very last row, there are two full lines of people in front of me. The two long lines full of people. I’ll put on a coat because it’s cold out there. As you can see, there’ll be a bullet train to Saporro at 11:30. And 11:42. I need to head down to floor B1 quickly. This is a ticket booth. It costs 1,150 yen to Sapuro. Tickets and change are dispensed here. Such a cute ticket. What? It’s tiny. So crowded. Other people tap their train cards on the top and we’ll insert our tickets underneath. Once you go through, the ticket will have a hole in it and it’s no longer usable. Now we’ll Head to lane one. I will take the 1142 train. We couldn’t make it to the 1131. [Music] freezing. When you go down here, you can feel the wind blowing from the train tracks. [Music] Since this is the last stop at the airport, the train will pause here for a while to let people board and it’ll go straight to Saporro. It’s about 41 km from here to Saporo. And the hotel we booked is near the Saporro station. It seems like the seats here have heaters underneath. I feel warm on my butt and my back. Let’s service very comfortable. It’s 11:41 and the train will start at 11:42 as the information board said. Oh, it’s 11:42 now. And the train starts. Wow, it’s right on time. Right on the second. The train is fully packed and as you can see behind me is full of snow. The train is super smooth. I’m going to stay quiet for a bit. All you can hear is the train cutting through the wind. Super smooth. And I can hear the train’s machinery in action. The snow’s super heavy this time, so coming here to enjoy it is just perfect. And the sunshine is beautiful, too. We’re just a few kilometers away from Saporro. [Music] We’re so sleepy now. [Music] Sir is having some sleep. [Music] One really cool thing about Japan is their directing banners. They’re super informative. You can easily find your way just by following them, combining with Google Maps. I don’t think we’ll get lost here. Wow. It’s so cold. As you can see, the snow looks pretty, but the street is all wet. The melted snow makes the street dirty. The snow clumps into big chunks that look like dirty ice cubes. And they’re hard like rocks. What’s going on? This is soft like soap. Try throwing it up into the sky. I thought it was soap. I brought lots of warm clothes. My outfit right now is quite thin. I started feeling cold after about 10 to 15 minutes outside. Cuz the hotel is right next to the train station. It’s only a 5 to 10 minute walk. I felt too lazy to dig more clothes out of my suitcase. Oh, it’s so warm. What is this? Here’s it checking your temperature. 32.3° C. Oh my god, that is far too low for a normal person. Ha, it’s burning. Actually, it’s just smoke and light. Even the wood is fake. But it looks so real. Yeah, two rooms. Yeah, that’s correct. They didn’t have a room for four, so we ended up booking two separate rooms. Two of us in one room and three in the other. Let’s check out this room first. This is a tiny room, enough for sleeping. What matters most is that there’s always a spot to work. This room is on the eighth floor. The view is just normal. Nothing stunning. Down there is the marks of You can see the marks left by parked cars in the snow. They look kind of funny. That’s an air filter. In Japan, there’s a strong focus on air quality. I even saw a machine at the reception that displays the AQI, the air quality index. Maybe I’ll take a nap for about 3 to 4 hours. After that, I’ll get up for a shower. See you soon in about 3 hours. Maybe 3 hours later. I went to sleep at 1:00 p.m. and it’s over 6:00 p.m. now. I’m wearing a heat tech shirt underneath to trap the heat, plus a t-shirt and a hoodie on top. And a thick coat outside. What’s the temperature outside? It is -5° C. You look like some stubborn child. Do I look like a gangster? like someone who steal dogs. As you can see, they’ve got a small lobby here. We come out here first and it’s colder out here, but it’s not as cold as the outside. We can stand here to get used to the temperature first. And when we step outside then, oh man, it’s freezing. Oh, these pine trees have cute lights hanging on them. For a 3 km ride, it’s going to be around 1,100 to,300 yen. around 10 USD. It’s quite pricey to take a taxi here. [Music] You can really see the snow falling under the lights. Just 300 more meters and we’ll be at the ramen shop. We’re starving. [Music] This door is automatically closed. Over there, that’s the ramen place we’re heading to for dinner. There are several people waiting at the front, so I think we’ll have to line up behind them. There are some people waiting inside, too. Two more guests have finished their meals. We’re about to head inside, so we can continue waiting. We won’t be able to eat just yet because there’s a long line of customers waiting inside. All of a sudden, there’s a crowd of people queuing behind us, and we became the earliest arrivals. Good thing we arrived when we did, 5 minutes later, and we’d be waiting forever. This ramen shop has many branches in Japan, but this is the first in the original store. So, if anyone visits Hokkaido or Saporro, they usually come here to have ramen. Oh, we’re about to get inside. I wonder if all three of us can go together. Two people. Thank you. We’ll sit here first. Eating ramen here is like playing a game where you can level up over time. Level one, standing in line outside. Level two, sitting indoors without a heater. It’s still cold in here. You can still see snow on the ground. Level three, sitting inside of there. It’s warmer since it has a heater. Level four is when you’re sitting at the table with steaming hot ramen. Thank you. Thank you. Let’s order three of the same thing. So, three cream and miso and choose uh one original, one, two moderate. Two moderate. When ordering ramen here, the first step is picking your soup base. They offer three types of broth: original, medium, and rich. The original is full of shrimp flavor, while the medium combines shrimp and pork stock. The rich broth is heavy on pork stock flavor. After picking the soup, the next step is choosing the seasoning. The main ingredient is shrimp. And here we have shrimp with miso. Miso is a fermented soybean paste from Japan. You can also get shrimp and salt or shrimp and soy sauce. If you’re visiting Japan, I’d recommend the miso since it’s what they’re known for. We’ve finished ordering. It’s still not our turn yet. We’ve reached the end of the line which goes all the way to the wall. A wall covered in signatures and notes from customers who have eaten here. And they’re famous people, singers, actors or artists from around the world that have came here to eat. I found a signature with a Maruko drawing. She’s a character in a funny anime. I watched it when I was a kid. Not when I was a kid kid, but when I was young, I used to watch that show. Now I’m all grown, so I don’t watch it anymore. [Music] Now I’ll sit here and wait for my food to arrive. [Music] Thank you. This is an onigiri fright guoza. [Music] This is my entire meal. Na’am, can you film my table from above so we can see everything more clearly? This spoon is so funny. It’s huge, just like a ladle. We have half of a marinated egg here, but this is shrimp on the top. This is pork. We usually call it charu, but actually this pork was simmered in soy sauce. This is the soup with some scallion on top. It’s so thick and rich from all the shrimp that’s been stewed in it. Also with pork broth as well. I’ll scoop up some broth to try it. [Music] M. The shrimp flavor is amazing. Although the broth I picked was more shrimp based, I can still taste the rich bone broth underneath. I’ll split the chopsticks up now. Sorry guys, I broke this place’s chopstick. I’ll try the marinated egg. Soft boiled marinated egg. The miso flavor is very clear. The yolk is thick and buttery. I love this style of egg. The yolk is thick and runny. I’ll try the shrimp on top. It’s crunchy with a scent of ginger. It’s like potato powder. And they covered it with shrimp flesh. Let me try the pork slice now. It’s a little broken apart. The pork is incredibly tender and has a strong miso flavor. It’s hot. The ramen noodles are chewy. It’s wheat flour based and the chewiness is from Cansui, which is alkaline mineral water. [Music] That alkaline mineral water works like the ash water Vietnamese cooks use to make chewy noodles. It makes the dough less absorbent, so the noodles keep their chewiness even after sitting in hot broth for a while. But it’s a bit too salty for the Vietnamese palette. This broth has a bold shrimp aroma and is very rich. In Japan, it’s common to eat ramen noodles in their full length without biting them off. According to my research, slurping like that pleases Japanese chefs since it indicates you’re having a great dining experience, but it doesn’t mean that eating in silence is impolite. You can eat gently by putting the noodles on the spoon, take some broth, then slurp gently. [Music] This won’t make a loud noise. The broth has probably been cooked with shrimp shells for a long time. That would explain this intense shrimp flavor. Besides that, I can taste the richness of pork bones, too. [Music] The flat side of this dumpling is crispy and the upper part is soft. It’s filled with minced meat. It’s packed with rich garlic and scallion flavor. Although it’s freezing outside, they still give us a large bottle of ice water and of course a glass. [Music] For the Vietnamese palette, this ramen was quite salty, so I felt so thirsty after eating. [Music] It’s 9:00 p.m. already. But as you can see, there are still many people queuing to get inside. Can you see that place ahead is full of people waiting to get inside, too? That’s also a famous ramen shop in this area. Saporro is famous for its ramen. There are many other ramen shops along this street, too. I’m so full already that I can’t even think about more ramen right now. But this place is very crowded. The line stretches from this side all the way to the other side. Oh, wow. Is this a snow pile? My gosh, it’s so thick. Ah, this is new snow. It’s still soft. This pile of snow looks like it was gathered and placed here, but I think the snow on top of the pile is recent. The layer underneath, which looks kind of brown, was gathered by a snow plow. Wow, look at that. There’s a whole lobster over there. Oh, it’s a crab. A spider crab. It’s a king crab. It’s a king crab, but I thought it was a lobster. I guess I’m so cold that I’m seeing things. After ramen, we’ll stop by this adorable place for another bite. I can’t really call it eating, though. It’s more like a place to drink and have ice cream. This store confuses me. I think if I come back to Saporro, I’ll definitely bring my friends to this place. It has such a cool, authentic Japanese vibe. Its character reminds me of Japanese people. Adorable, yet with such strong personality, you get the sweet, creamy taste of ice cream combined with the bold, intense flavor of alcohol. Follow me. Our destination is in this building. It’s on the sixth floor, so we’ll use an elevator. Here are the crabs again. Why does seafood keep showing up in front of me? Maybe that’s a sign. How? I definitely need to get some seafood now. This place still asks us to maintain our distance and stand in the four corners of the elevator. Turn your face to the wall and follow the rules. This look funny. Just kidding. We’re a group so we don’t need to do this. These rules are for strangers. There’s a very distinctive blue door here. At the entrance, they have the menu shown in Japanese and English. Each set serves one person, so everyone needs to order at least one set. As you can see, one set is 1,500 yen, nearly 15 USD. The set comes with one ice cream and two types of liquor. also some desserts, yogurt and coffee. With the B set, we can have three liquors. They have a set with just ice cream, which they said is only for kids. They have a set with just ice cream, which they said is only for kids who can’t have alcoholic drinks. I’ll ask and beg them to see if I can order this set because I’m not good at drinking liquor. Let’s get inside. It says that we have to take a number. What number? Are they out of numbers? Have they stopped serving now? Where can I get the number? Thank you. After taking the number, we’ll come out here and wait. We’ll stand here to wait. Can you see where they came from? They’re coming from the emergency exit stairs. And behind them is a crowd of people who are also waiting for their turn. 15 minutes later. [Music] Let’s sanitize our hands. [Music] [Music] They have a menu where we can choose which alcohol to pair with ice cream. So many options. So many of them. [Music] This is crazy to look at. Wow. Ice cream is served first. We can refuse the ice cream. Yeah. Refill. One more. One more. Refill ice cream. Um, one more cup of ice cream for free. You can eat one more cup of ice cream. Okay. This is black tea with black tea. What is this? Black tea. Black tea. Black tea. Oh, it’s black tea. The least alcoholic one. Coconut. Coconut. 11 years old. Scotchy whiskey. Whiskey. Gemstone. Ah. The name of the drink is shown in front of it. Kiss of rose. Kiss of rose. Richi. Liy is my I ordered the leche liquor. Raspberry. Raspberry. Yes. And chocolate. Okay. Thank you. Thank you so much. I ordered the chocolate and lychi liquors. The liquor glasses are tiny. And we have such a huge cup of ice cream. Once we finish one cup, we can apparently ask for another free ice cream. since we have two shots. I don’t know, though. Maybe that’s how it works here. This place makes me feel like there are so many contradictions. The decoration is so cute. It looks very fairy tale-ike, but they serve liquors. The main dish is ice cream, but it’s served with liquors, and some of them are quite strong. So, this is like a sweet but psycho place. I’ll eat some ice cream first and taste the liquor afterward. Let me get a scoop of ice cream. [Music] I smell nothing. Cow’s milk ice cream. It’s so rich and flavorful. When you scoop it up and you smell it, you don’t smell anything. But when you have a bite, The cow’s milk has a vibrant richness. The ice cream is very smooth and thick. Here, have some. I’ll hold the camera. Otherwise, the ice cream will melt. Can you smell anything? Nothing. Now try it. It’s rich, right? Yeah. I can taste some orange, too. It’s the orange peel. Yeah, that’s it. [Music] The ice cream can really fool our taste buds. When we eat cold foods, we can’t taste the sweetness as much. But actually, it’s really sweet. After eating 1/5 of the cup, I’ll take half a spoon of ice cream. They have a mark here. If we put the spoon at the edge and let it go, then you can add liquor to this spoon of ice cream. I will choose the chocolate liquor. [Music] I’ll take a spoonful of liquor and put it on the ice cream. It looks like chocolate, but it’s alcohol. The chocolate aroma is wonderful with a subtle bitter note from the liquor. The bitterness is really light. I can’t taste the alcohol because the richness and sweetness of the ice cream have covered it. So, I only had a little bit of liquor. Just a few drops from that small spoon. Just half a spoon of ice cream. Not too much. It’s so thick that it clogs together. stays down there. Put it back on the cup. The spoon can stand like this no matter what. So, you ordered a liquor that’s over 60% alcohol. Which one is that? This one, right? Over 60% alcohol. Damn, this is strong enough to grill squid with. It smells incredibly strong. I will only take half a spoonful since I can’t handle liquor well. Just a few drops. The alcohol content is higher, so the flavor is much stronger. It caught me off guard. But once you get past that alcohol surprise, there’s the sweetness and richness of ice cream. This is such a nice way of eating ice cream. I’ll take some coconut liquor from Nam. We’re Ben Tree people. Here we go. Just a tiny spoonful. Drop it on top. [Music] Wow, this coconut liquor pairs so well with the ice cream. The coconut flavor is mild and the alcohol isn’t overpowering. I think people who don’t usually drink could end up getting drunk here because these flavor combinations are so good. It’s not difficult to consume like it would be drinking liquor straight. For someone who’s bad at drinking like me, this is an ideal spot for getting together with friends. I think I could start the same concept in Saigon. Each table gets a complimentary glass of black tea. It’s for those who can’t drink. The black tea is a bit bitter, but the scent is amazing. We also have a small side dish. This look like a seed. This looks like roasted millet. Crepe is and some beans. The beans were cooked in rum. They have a slight sweetness with rum notes. Add some millet on top. then wrap it up. If our parents ask where we going, we’ll come to this place and tell them that I’m having some ice cream. Look how princessy the place is. But when we get off the call, so many glasses of liquor are in front of us. It’s complicated. A cool private drinking place in Japan. Pi team everyone, I’m Kai.
