The Takatsu River, a clear stream flowing through Masuda City, Shimane Prefecture.
One of its tributaries, the Hikimi River, is home to ayu fishing known as “tomozuri.”
This traditional Japanese method takes advantage of the ayu’s territorial nature:
an “otori-ayu” (decoy fish) is released into another ayu’s territory, provoking it to attack.
The angler then hooks the defending fish at the moment of impact.
