🍽 What an Eye Opener…| Hachinohe & Sendai Japan🇯🇵 | Villa Vie Odyssey | Ep 131
[Music] Hey I’m Steve and I’m Angela and we are Midlife Cruising. We live fulltime on the Villa V Odyssey residential cruise ship and we share all things cruise life and all things cruise ports. In today’s episode, we head to Hachi No and Sai where we experience food, we experience amazing culture. They are so polite and willing to give a hand here in Japan. It is absolutely awesome. So, we want to know out of all the foods we show today, and there’s a lot, which ones have you tried or would you be willing to try? Cuz I’ll tell you what, one time our friend Paul orders beef tongue. Uh, not so much for me. But there’s a lot of food experiences going on. Uh we spend two different days in two different ports in Japan. And right now we’re at sea heading on towards Tokyo where we’re going to do an 8day land tour going more towards the interior getting an indepth view of Japan and we couldn’t be more excited. And speaking of recommendations, what kinds of foods do you recommend we try on this trip? and for me the types of beers. And before we get into this episode, remember we started a second channel called Villa V Odyssey Rentals and we just added another one for rent. So head on over, check it out, and come join us. And here’s a little sneak peek information. We’ve started a little remodel. We went to IKEA in Sendai, made some purchases. We’re doing a few updates and we can’t wait to share those with you. Well, we hope you enjoy this episode. All right, our next stop in Japan for you. Okay, thank you. Okay, the smile. Three, two, one. Okay. Well, that was quite the welcome here in Hashinohei. Sorry, I’m sure I butchered that. It’s like a school project. Yeah. All right. I’ll be honest. I feel like I’m in the driver’s seat right now and this feels very foreign to me, but uh we are headed into city center right now. All right, good morning friends. We are in Hachi Nohi uh today. I think that’s the right pronunciation. And this morning we find oursel in Hashoku Center which is a massive shopping mall of everything. Uh so far I’ve seen lots of seafood, lots of fresh items, sweets, uh coffees and [Music] All right. Blackberry and apple pie. [Music] What do you think? Sweet. Delicious. Like a croissant. Not too much blackberry, but it is lovely. One more shot. Don’t you eat it all. Save your wife some. What about me? [Music] Tasty, but it’s not overwhelmingly sweet, right? [Music] It’s best just rose after [Music] colored salts made with berries and vegetables. All right, that’s pretty cool. It’s uh cook your own food here, but it’s all seafood and just wild stuff we’ve never seen before. Has like butter shave on it. All right. So, this is all the fresh seafood that you buy here from the market and then take it next door to cook. No, not really. [Music] Good idea. [Music] You’re starring in our next video. I was wondering. Oh, all right. We got one bean paste and one custard filled. And uh we’re going to see which one we like. Here goes to nothing. I have no idea which one this is. [Music] Oh, that’s the custard one. M delicious. We’re going to just keep trying food in front of you. The dough is not very sweet like that outer part. It’s got a little sugar on it, but the custard’s lovely. How much was it? 330 yen. I think one was one was 170 and the other one was 150. So 330 for both. This is the one I really wanted to try. The red bean paste inside this waffley uh fish. [Music] They use it in sweets all over. This red bean paste. What do you think? Really creamy. It tastes like sweet red beans. Really? Yes. Now I’m scared. No, it’s it’s good. It’s got a good creamy texture. Right. It doesn’t taste like a dessert, though. No. Steve approves. It’s different. I’m not sure. I’m trying to think what would you dip this in to make it like a meal. I don’t think it needs anything. [Music] [Music] again. Huh? [Music] What’ you get? Uh, I think it’s lemon water since 1904. We’ll have to find out. All right, we have left the shopping mall looking for a ramen restaurant and we’ve been to two and they’ve been completely full. So, we’re trying a third here and uh walking through a few different neighborhoods. So, I hope the third time’s a charm. Oh, it’s green. And he’s going to run me over. All right, Rick. Google will work. Outdoor seating. This says sauce. Yeah. All right. Whatever. I’ll try it. Vegetable. Vegetable. Vegetable sauce. Pork. Pork cutlet. Pork cutlet. All right. Well, we managed to get through ordering and this is the menu. God, whatever it is, we’re in some neighborhood. All right, today’s beer is Kieran Prime Brew. So, let’s give it a shot. Got a nice This is not a pint. It’s like two. Cheers, friends. Good iced tea. The bathroom like a nice Little Mickey is they have towels up and you know very interesting tasting refreshing crisp. Guess it’s like malty on the finish, but it’s ice cold. We’re in an authentic ramen shop. This is amazing. Let’s give this one a 9.0. Little guillosa appetizer. It’s not super hot. Oh, here it is. It’s a button. I bought some uh definitely try it. Oh, I’m so happy right now. Okay. Thank you. I wonder what you do. [Music] Okay, that was an amazing experience here and uh I’m stuffed. We are going to head to a grocery store now before we call our Uber back to the ship. So, let’s go check out this grocery store. Avocados 158 yen. Now that is a bok choy. 3.98. Look what Angela found me for bourbon. [Music] Wow. I am all set for the next year. [Music] All right. Here’s crackers. 298 yen. Here’s the beri olive oil. seems to be all over the world. 1,980 yen for 500 milliliters. All right. Potato chips. I’m going to guess these are sour cream and onion. Maybe somebody out there can tell me. 128 yen. All right. If you live here and you’re just dying for Campbell’s minestronei soup, it’ll set you back 338 yen. Here’s 350 gram of Wagu beef for 1980 yen. [Music] Here’s Twinning Earl Gray, 498 yen. Here’s 160 g of Starbucks breakfast blend, 898 yen. Well, there is no shortage of beer here. I just haven’t seen anything that looks interesting to me yet, but I’m going to keep looking. All right, here’s a case of the Kieran beer that I had. 500ml cans and it’s a 24 pack. 5580 yen. All right. It’s such an interesting experience when we go to these grocery stores. Um, and especially here in Japan where everything’s brand new. So, I hope you enjoyed it. All right. One thing walking out of the grocery store I noticed and that’s the size of the carts. When’s the last time you’ve seen a cart this size? And this is the size of all their carts. It’s not uh just the small one. [Music] Yeah. Hey, [Music] happy morning. [Applause] That’s what we play for pickle ball from 9 to 5. Well, good morning friends. We are pulling up here in Sendai. I’m so proud of myself being able to pronounce this, unlike the last port. All right, let’s uh walk out and check it out. Looks like they have the welcome committee and some performers out here. Very nice. Very nice. How exciting. Let’s uh take a look. [Applause] From the port, we decided to walk the mile and a half to the Outland Mall where we explored, shopped, and had lunch. I’m Paul and I’m eating beef tongue and it is delicious. The meat that tastes you. So, I used Google Lens to try to read the menu. I made out the word chicken and went for it. I have no idea. I’m just going to see how it goes. They have a spoon and chopstick, so we’ll see how that goes. [Music] I couldn’t even guess that flavor. It’s pizza. It’s Miso. Yeah, it’s miso. I can just smell it. Interesting. You slice it thin just like corn beef. Oh, I was thinking I was thinking corn beef when I said that. Okay. Yeah. The outer belly chicken. No, yesterday I had pork, but it was like egg and rice. I forgot. Okay. All right. Here’s my lunch. Uh $7.80. I have a ginger ale, a hot soup, and my chicken bowl, but it’s cold. So, they asked me if I wanted my soup hot or cold. So, it’s just a whole new experience. Cheers, friends. [Music] Fried chicken. You could be meant for that. Yeah. Better. All right. Well, we just enjoyed a morning of shopping around here at the Mitsui Outlet Park. That’s where we had lunch. And now we are headed to IKEA. [Music] All right. Well, we are here in the waiting area for our piece of uh furniture for our room. We’ll show you that here soon. But what is remarkable right now is we’re right next to one of the food courts here. And it’s so quiet, big echoey uh building that we’re in. Just very peaceful and quiet here. And there’s probably a hundred people over there sitting down. Not what we’re used to. Darn it. [Music] Well, we hope you enjoyed this episode. Wasn’t Hatcha no and Sendai just amazing? Japan is just rocking our world and we are loving it. What did you think about the inside of IKEA? Wasn’t it so quiet? Peaceful is definitely a top five word to describe Japan. Again, remember, head over to Villa V Odyssey Rentals and watch our second channel. Black Berry & Apple Pie goes Great with Beer ..''' JIM BEAM ''' a Year
maybe two Weeks for Me …..
This was a very interesting video. I enjoyed seeing the markets and am glad you tried the taiyaki with red bean paste.
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you showing all the culture of where you visit. (Food, architecture, lifestyles). IKEA is definitely NOT like this in Canada 😳. The variety of seafood is over the top! I would be in my glory. The vending machines are amazing. Prices are so reasonable…love your grocery price comps. Fantastic episode!
Absolutely amazing choice of food so much to choose from
I would definitely try the black berry and apple pie. I would also try that cold chicken bowl. As far as beer goes I am partial to the Belgium Trappist offerings like Chimay and Westmalle and Orval, or others that are similar like of course the wonderfully smiling face of St. Bernardus. Sam Adams sometimes has an interesting take on the style with their Tetravis.
Your hair looks amazing
I do not enjoy seafood, I think I would struggle with the food there.
I lived in Misawa Japan from The fall of 1983 until the summer of 1987. We joke that my daughter was made in Japan 😂. I wish I could go back.
ok steeve know how to use chop sticks Respect
Interesting just how reasonable some of those groceries were! I loved how the welcoming committee rolled out the red carpet for the Odyssey – I expect they don't get many cruise ships there. 🙂
My favorite food was the appetizer Steve had at the ramen restaurant.
First of all, Angela, you look great in the opening shot today! How, you too Steve) As for the food…..,I would try some of it but nothing that has a bug-like look to it….even if from the ocean. I would 💯 try the dumpling! Enjoy it all. Beautiful, unique experience.
Great video. I am curious on your thoughts on the health reports Villa Vie got on the 83% failed report. This question is only on your thought and concerns if any you may have. Every place fails at least once.
That interests me as well, thanks.
I loved this video! I had never thought about cruising to Japan but now I really want to! Thanks for taking us along!❤
💃🕺🍺☕️
I love to see when the local people come to the ship to welcome you and give you a farewell performance. The small grocery carts are probably due to them shopping daily for fresh seafood, meat and produce. The food looked wonderful.
Another great post! Can't go wrong with Gyoza! ❤
Professional Baseball in Japan is huge. My friend said it is wild & fun, very different from USA Major League Baseball experience. Something to try is you're interested.
Look forward to your posts, love this adventure!🛳️🛳️🛳️
I found nothing was really sweet in Japan. I also tried beef tongue. Really chewy and not much flavor. And no Coke products.
Try: ramen, udon, tempura, and lots of different sushi
Green tea with toasted rice is❤ delicious.
Bean cakes are so delicious. I ate them on a mountain I climbed near Hachioji in 2018
I bought six red bean paste confections. Froze 5 and thawed one at a time for breakfast with fruit and green tea. Delicious.
Very hospitable people. It must have been a very enjoyable day.
You switched places to sit for the video. Steve’s ramen bowl looked like something I would try. Maybe the blackberry apple hand pie. Enjoy your exploring. Looking forward to seeing more of Japan.
I am not very adventurous with food and probably would starve in Japan.
Since 1904! That's a pretty old bottle of water! Lol 😂💧their prices are comparable to ours. Loved your video thanks for sharing your journey with us. ❤👌
I like Sapporo Black.
When you are in Tokyo, be sure to check out the Asahi Beer Headquarters. On the 22nd floor, you’ll find the Asahi Sky Room, a bar offering panoramic views over Tokyo. On a clear day you can see Mt Fuji. Beer and fantastic views of Tokyo and the surrounding area. Super Dry is my favourite Japanese Beer and where better to try it than at their office tower. You won’t regret it.
It's time to get out that Translation Reading App. They are great for instant translation.
That was so fun! Beautiful! My brother and sister in law lived in Japan (he was in the navy) my neice was born there! My nephew was a little blonde hair blue eyed boy- it was Disneyland first opened- all the characters wanted a picture with him🤣🤣! Glad you are having a blast
I would love to know what did you have at the Ramen restaurant? Steve Gyoza fried or steamed? Steamed is yummy😊
Good prices at the grocery store! Starbucks is so inexpensive there😊 Where to next? I’m going to look up a few restaurants I’ve been to in Sydney and Brisbane 🎉
What do you use for WiFi on your phone in different countries? We are going from Honolulu to, Tahiti, New Zealand, and Australia! Thanks for your help.
Just curious, are there any suites the incorporate a 'Murphy' bed (or something similar) Thanks
I like to eat the red bean pastry as a snack or with other food at breakfast. I try to get to an Asian bakery at least once a year.
I hope you try sake. It is served in different containers and at different temperatures.
McDonald's in Japan does have some items that are only available in Japan.
Loving all of your posts.
Twine ings is tea brand steve lol
