Only 7 SEATS—100 Burgers Sold Daily! He LOST $200K to Fraud

The doctor said, “Be prepared for that” Good morning! Good morning! Thank you so much for today Are you heading somewhere next? Yes, I’m heading to the office Well, it’s the weekend and it’s raining, so I don’t think we’ll see much of a line You might think, “Oh, that’s it?” No no! Thanks! Roughly what percent of foreign customers? Around 10 to 20 percent So most of them are Japanese? That’s right May I help you? No, thanks! I used to work at an internet company Oh, really? My former boss at the time opened this restaurant first What kind of internet business was it? We ran a portal site, and went through many difficulties, in New Zealand… New Zealand!? I felt Japan’s tax was too tough, so I thought, “I’ll move to New Zealand!” An advisor helped me set up a company there and etc… But I ended up losing around $200,000 What!? In New Zealand!? Yes The advisor deceived me He was a consultant I trusted him because he was a former banker Our eggs come straight from the farm, no middlemen involved Actually, middlemen might be cheaper, but I want a direct connection with the producers It’s the same with rice—we get it directly too Anything you focus on with customers? Foreign visitors often travel a long way and spend a lot, I want them to leave happily so rather than leave disappointed, That’s wonderful! If it were me, I’d hate to spend all that and leave unhappy can offer that kind of hospitality— Only independent shops like us chain stores just follow manuals What’s the bean sprouts for? They’re a side to go along with the hamburg steaks So you pre‑stir‑fry them What motivated you to start your own business? I once lived with my grandmother in Nara She ran her own shop Oh, really? What kind of business? She sold architectural hardware My grandfather had already passed, but I heard many stories from her and thought running a business sounded interesting She kept telling me… “Consistency is the most important thing” That advice stuck with you Even if others think you’re doing something pointless, the person who keeps at it will eventually succeed I believe that now—and I live by it To keep that going, and make them come back it’s crucial to be loved by customers What I actually do is, for example… is offering unlimited soup and rice— although it’s easy to say, “Have more soup and rice” most people won’t ask for more, especially Japanese customers… That’s true Even foreigners don’t ask often But if I say, “Can I get you more soup? Help yourself” they really appreciate it, especially female customers Some of them become regulars So turning first‑time guests into regulars is how I keep going That’s the key I at least visit once When a new restaurant opens nearby, to build a good connection Then I tell them… you’ll hire me, right?” (laugh) “If my shop ever goes under, Since visitors pay a lot to come to Japan, not just my place but I want them to enjoy Japan as much as possible If my food is part of that experience and they enjoy it, I’m truly happy but I use tools like Google Translate—for example, My English isn’t good, “I hope your days in Japan continue to be good” Then they say “Thank you!” thank goodness for that translation (laugh) I think Google is amazing— Just yesterday, we had tourists from overseas They were here the day before, and came again yesterday! Tourists? Yes, we do have guests like that It really makes me happy (Staff member approaches) Welcome! appreciate that (laugh) Thanks to the rain, there’s no line today— Western‑style hamburg steak and egg rice Okay, please bring the rice to the guest It’ll be the egg rice He comes almost every day— a really great customer We honestly don’t get any unpleasant customers here Right? They’re all good people Is this amount of rice okay? Yes, that’s okay There’s usually a line, so it’s hard to get in So today’s “finally the day!” is it? Yes! the Japanese‑style hamburger steak! The recommendation is And egg rice! Not plain rice— egg rice! (laugh) What’s your impression of the owner? He’s kind Same as before? Even on the first visit—he’s so kind Rice, OK? Is the size OK for you guys? Like more or less? a little bit more! Thank you! I love your foods, delicious! Thank you very much! Have a nice day! You too! (laugh) Thank you! Thank you for your cooperation! Where are you guys from? From Canada! Ok, so you have been traveling? Yeah! This is, for this year, our first vacation! Oh! Like finally!? Long vacation! How long? About 2 weeks! It’s quite or very long time, right? Yeah! How was the hamburg, like how was the taste? It’s really good! This is like a just balance, not that salty…just balance! Great balance! Yes! We just checked out around before 11 AM And we were passing here and the smell…(laugh) Ah…great smell! (laugh) This smell makes her… I told him “Why don’t we try it” (What brought you guys here?) For me, just smell! Really delicious one! Like when you were walking around here…(laugh) Yeah! Like “What the smell! I want to try!” (laugh) They are both good (including the staff) The owner is really good! Very hospitable! (We got to eat) this one, right? It’s the hamburg steak? Hamburg steak! I searched here on Google, and 4.5! 4.5 stars! Yes! Are you mother and daughter? I thought so! (laugh) That’s right! (laugh) We came by for lunch while shopping today Last time, there was a line and we couldn’t get in I see But today we were lucky and got in It also smells great from outside Thank you so much Thanks for your time Thanks for today! Thank you! See you again tomorrow! What were we talking about? (laugh) Oh, about when I collapsed recently That was on a Friday A Friday, huh? Around 1 PM, I believe and couldn’t sleep well, I had a pounding headache the night before waking up many times That morning, I came to work with the headache Another staff came in at 10, “I’m feeling rough today, but I’ll do my best” and I remember saying, And then… around 12:30, my vision started to fade What…? It kept getting darker Your vision? Yes, it narrowed more and more Then I couldn’t hear customers anymore What!? Yes, really I thought, “This is bad—this isn’t right” I couldn’t stand, so I kept crouching down— While you were in the kitchen… and it kept dimming? Yes Oh no… In the end, my vision was like a thin thread I could barely hear the customers they probably thought, “What’s he saying?” When I spoke, Then around 1:30, I closed the shop, because even standing was hard The building owner called an ambulance Paramedics came and immediately knew something was wrong with me They said, “Let’s get into the ambulance now!” But I said… “I need to clean up first” (laugh) Friday is rice delivery day, and when the rice delivery came, I could barely recognize his face He asked me, “Are you okay?” over and over, but… I was like this They took me to a big hospital In the ambulance they told me to lie down, but I didn’t I felt if I slept, it would be the end I’d never stand up again, so I stayed sitting When we arrived, I got out of the ambulance myself, and they scanned my head right away… It turned out I had a brain tumor That was on Friday How big was it? 4.2 cm (1.65 in) they’d treat it with medication and monitor it If it’s around 2.5 cm (0.98 in), But at 4.2 cm (1.65 in), surgery was necessary Any risk of aftereffects? Yes, the doctor told me that He said, “Be prepared for that” “Do you still want to go ahead with the surgery?” I was asked, And I said, “Yes” The doctor was surprised “Have you consulted your family?” Oh, did you go alone? No, I went with my wife, I had to accept it but I had no choice, nothing to consult, So I said, “Let’s proceed” (laugh) I see I always tell my regulars, “I’ll grill hamburg steaks until I’m 80 If I make it that long, maybe someone will take over If not, I’ll just close the shop” I’ll keep grilling for another 30 years! take this place over? Are you thinking of having your son Not at all You have two sons I’d prefer someone else to run this shop with asking me, “Can I buy this shop?” I’d say, “Sure, go ahead” “You also have my customers, so go ahead” That’s what I’m thinking

  6. This is one of my fav foods here in America. My mother would put gravy and rice(we had greens to go with it) but yeah they're basically eating what I ate as a child in Virginia…

  7. If you're young, find a Japanese language school in Tokyo & go on a student VISA & stay awhile. Japan will not disappoint you… I regard it as the cleanest, safest, and most kindest country in the world… the food will just make you love it even more.

The Chef's attention to detail and being totally aware of the business aspect is phenomenal 👏 I pray his procedure is fine and back in his kitchen quickly 🙏 One thing I have to say besides every dish prepared looks delicious 😋 the eggs are the freshest I've ever seen? Those yellow/orange yolks are what you expect in Farm fresh eggs 😊 Must love from Chicago ❤
