This is a 300-year-old Japanese festival. At the Nebuta Festival, giant lanterns are paraded around the streets of Almori. Most of them resemble characters from Japanese folktales, ancient warlords, and important historical characters in Japanese history. Nowadays, you can also find a ton of anime characters, and even strange things like comedian stores. But the people parading these lanterns around the city have a ton of pressure on their shoulders, no pun intended, because each one of these colorful lanterns cost around 2 million yen and take around 360 days to complete because they are completely handmade. So during the parade they’re accompanied by Tao drum players and these dancers called Hanetto whose main purpose is to cheer them on and have many spectators join them which is very rare for Japanese festival. And even though nobody really knows the exact origin of this festival it’s endorsed by Hatsune Miku and celebrated every year during my birthday August 2nd to August 7th. But keep in mind that if you want to go to this festival I recommend booking your hotel at least one year in advance or otherwise you’re going to be paying $500 a night.
