Tokyo Station Food Tour: Ramen Street, Sushi and BBQ Under One Roof

Tokyo Station is one of the biggest and busiest transportation hubs in Japan and even the world. But when you’re coming through Tokyo Station, don’t just rush through it like most people do. It’s definitely a station worth exploring for its food as well, because it also is one of Tokyo’s top food destinations. So, today I’m going to be exploring three really great restaurants located inside Tokyo Station. And even though Tokyo Station is very challenging to navigate, I’m gonna hopefully make it a little bit easier for you to find those restaurants. So, without further ado, I’m going to get out of this rain and wind. I feel like a weather reporter standing in the middle of it. But before we do, don’t forget to subscribe for more informative and exciting Japan adventures like this one. All right, let’s get out of this typhoon. Back to you, Mark. Tokyo Station is not only a transit hub, it is also home to a ton of delicious food, including the food located here on Tokyo Ramen Street. This is a corridor that has eight of Japan’s top ramen shops, all located in one place. You should be able to find it rather easily if you exit through the Yayasu gate. You can use the Yayasu underground central gate or you can take the Yasu Southgate, come down the stairs, and then you’ll find yourself right here in front of this one. Tokyo Ramen Street first launched in the year 2009, and it was meant to be kind of the one-stop shop for ramen lovers who are stopping through Tokyo. But today, there’s one in particular that I’ve actually visited before that is also a fan favorite and has a little something for everyone. You’ll see what I mean in just a second. Let’s go check out Ramen Street. Come on. All right. My first stop of the day is right here on Ramen Street at Surrano Nam Man. This ramen shop has been around for quite a while now on this street and they’re known for their lighter and very colorful bowls of soup. So, as you can see, they have a lot of choices. Up here are their classic like star main menu items. There’s just so much to choose from. I’m kind of blown away. But let’s start with a vegan tonan ramen. [Music] Oh, no. Oh, [Music] what’s I need to [Music] [Music] It smells really nutty because of the sesame seeds. It’s got this really nice sesame aroma to it. If you like tantammen, which is kind of a Chinese style ramen that’s usually a little bit spicy. This is probably one that you will also enjoy. Okay, technically I’m supposed to start with the soup. Let’s have a sip. Here we go. M. Oh, that’s a little spicy. There is a a kick to the throat with all of the chili oil on the top. So, if you like spicy, this is nice, but it’s not extremely spicy. It also has a really creamy broth and lots of sesame to give this like nutty sesame creamy flavor of the soup. All right, I’m going to try some noodles here. This looks so good. Here we go. Like Oh, yum. Oh my gosh. The noodles are not as thick or like chewy as some other ramen shops you’d see. It’s kind of like a thinner style of noodle. It’s a really lovely texture. It goes really well with the creaminess of the soup. The soy meat is really good even on its own. It’s like very well seasoned and it really makes a nice texture and flavor addition to the tantammen noodles. This is a really solid vegan and vegetarian ramen in Tokyo. But also in the vein of research, I thought it’d be nice to try one other ramen today, even though I’m going to get really full. And that’s the special ramen that has mushrooms in it, which is one of their most popular menu items. All right, so this is the special mushroom ramen. Uh, it looks really good. There are so many toppings, which I love. I think what’s a little bit unique about it is that it’s not just meat and the meat is actually chicken, also maybe chashu pork, and then lots of veggies. And then this crispy parmesan cheese, which doesn’t even look like parmesan, so I was really confused. Okay, first I just want to sample the soup flavors. So, the first soup. M. Oh, it’s actually really light. Okay. Light, but mushroomy. And then once you mix in the mushroom oil, the color gets a lot darker. Ooh. The flavors also get richer and deeper. Oh, it’s really tasty. I love that. I love that you can enjoy like a lighter soup or a richer soup. Oh, look at this. The noodles are thicker than the vegan tantammen ramen. I’m quite surprised. M. Yeah, the noodles are really chewy. Actually, I really like a thick noodle generally. So, the thickness of the noodle is just right. It’s a little bit flat and wide. I also love that there’s some crunch with the veggies. I really like this. If you want something a little bit different um that’s a that deviates from your really standard ramen, I think this is worth a try. So, definitely check this out next time you’re in Tokyo Station if you can find it. Good luck. All right, let’s go find some more food here in Tokyo Station. See you at the next one. It’s not only ramen that you can get inside Tokyo Station. You can also get really fresh sushi. So today I’m checking out the Tokyo Haneda Market conveyor belt sushi restaurant located on the basement B1 floor of Tokyo Station in the Grandsta building. One thing to keep in mind though is it’s actually located inside the ticket gate. So you will need to get a ticket to enter this part of the station if you’re coming from outside. But on the other hand, if you are riding the train, you can just get off the train and then hop right in. It’s a very popular restaurant amongst locals especially where you can enjoy fish from all across Japan. So let’s go inside and try conveyor belt style sushi. Come on. All right. So before we start eating today, I actually have a chance to interview the CEO of the company. A very special opportunity. So let’s hear a little bit about him and this restaurant today. I don’t [Music] [Music] Not even. Hi. Hi. [Music] [Music] Welcome to you. [Laughter] All right. Well, that was a lovely little opportunity to get to know the restaurant better. So, now it’s time to order. So, one thing that’s really important to note recently is that the conveyor belt style has changed a lot over the years, but nowadays, unfortunately, this is just a way to show what they have. So, they still have the conveyor belt and you can see what kind of menu items you can get like squid, but then you would order it on here. And the ones that you actually order, they’ll either hand deliver it to you or it’ll come on the bullet train straight from the kitchen. So, at least hygiene wise, it’s better. So, think of it in a positive light. So, let’s see what we can order today. It’s here. Yay. I love it when it comes on the train. This is the highgrade sea urchin. And you should push the button once you get the train to send it back. Otherwise, it’s going to be ch stuck here. Return. Oh, bye. There it goes. It’s so fast. It’s here and it’s gone. All right. So, something I like to do for the gung mak, I usually like to put a few drops of soy sauce on top just to avoid like tipping it over, making a mess. M. That’s really good. There is a little bit of bitterness. However, the creaminess definitely trumps any of that other flavor. So, even if you don’t like sea urchin that much, I think you might be able to enjoy how creamy and like buttery the texture is. Very tasty. I think it’s worth getting the higher grade one. Personally, that is so fresh and creamy. M. All right, so we have our next nigis. Um, these ones they hand press. Nigiru means to press. That’s why they’re called nigiri. So, they make them right there. So, I decided to get the olo, the large fatty tuna, and the Japanese grunt, which I have never had before. So, this will be a new experience. M. Oh, there’s quite a lot of wasabi in there. It’s um kind of a white meat fish, as you can see. So, the meat is a little bit firmer, less fatty than some of these red meat fish. The lightness of the fish actually allows the flavor of the rice to stand out. So, they use this red vinegar which is really flavorful. It gives that slightly sour refreshing kick to it. And I think that’s why you don’t need a ton of soy sauce. All right. Now, let’s try the fatty tuna. Let’s see how it tastes. M. I don’t know what it is. For me, I love the fatty tuna. It just adds, you know, it’s kind of like eating a Wagyu beef. Like it’s got this wonderful marbling fat that kind of seeps into it. It just adds this juicy flavor. And that’s what you get with a fatty tuna as well. And it also still allows the red vinegar rice to kind of shine. So basically, if you would like some of the freshest fish that you can possibly get in Tokyo, apparently you got to come here to Tokyo Station. That’s some hot tip for you guys if you can find it. And speaking of this being similar to Wagyu beef, I actually have a Wagyu beef restaurant coming right up next. So, I’ll see you guys over there. I am here now in yet another dining street located on the B1 floor of Tokyo Station called Kurob Yakoo. As you can see, there’s a lot of restaurants down here. And what’s good about this is it’s inside the Grandsta building of Tokyo Station, but you don’t need to pay for a ticket to get in here because it’s outside of the ticket gate, which is really nice. And my next stop is actually right here at Yainikuboya. This is a wonderful Yakiniku restaurant. And actually, fun fact, it is the first and only Yakiniku restaurant located inside Tokyo Station. Very cool. So, if you want to get Yakiniku, this is the only place you can you would have to go, but also you would want to go here. So, anyway, I’m going to be trying a coarse dinner here. It’s going to be very very nice. They’ll be grilling some of the meat right in front of me, and I’m very excited to see what they have to offer. So, let’s go inside. [Music] reasonably I don’t know. Hi Oh, that’s a great That’s a great thing to know. Let’s go. The flames are really close actually. All right, so this will be the first dish that I’m trying in this course. Just a disclaimer, I’m only going to be trying a few items from this course. There’s actually going to be 10 types of beef dishes in the supreme course. So, without further ado, mhm. Oh my gosh, no words. Basically, that’s actually so much more flavor than I was even anticipating. It’s the blowtorrching. It makes it so smoky and so juicy. All of those fats from the marbling and the wagyu beef, it all just kind of melts together on your tongue. So juicy and delicious. That’s a good start to the course. All right, so now I have a gorgeous assortment of A5 grade Wagyu beef. Uh, this actually has eight different parts of the cow. This one you get to grill it yourself. So, you get to have the classic um yaki niku shop experience. Don’t burn yourself. Oh, no. I broke it in half. I think I’ve slightly overcooked one side. The flames really cook it really fast. Like, oh, that’s that’s way too much salt. So, I’m going to try the chateau bri uh dunked in salt with a little bit of wasabi on top. I did take some of the salt off, so hopefully it’s not too salty. You know what? I think I cooked that just perfectly. Um, it looks sort of like I was overcooking it, but the inside is still really tender. Kind of like a medium rare, which is generally how Japanese like Wagyu restaurants like to cook their meat because the quality of the meat is so high. You just want to enjoy the actual flavor of the meat. Yum. All right, I’m also going to try some other cuts that are going to go well with the other sauces. So, let’s try that one next. I think we have to flip it already. It goes so fast. Okay. Oh, that looks good. Ah, look at that. Oh, it’s so juicy and fatty. It really Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. All right, this is really getting cooked up. All right, I’m going to try some of this flank uh without putting anything on it cuz it’s already been marinated. So, we’ll see if that’s enough flavor. Here we go. M m. You know what’s really interesting about this marinade is it has a bunch of sesame seeds in it. So, when you’re cooking the meat, the sesame seeds get toasted. So you get this like toasty sesame seed taste. If you wanted a little bit more saltiness cuz it’s quite mild, I suppose you could add it into the soy sauce or dip it in the salt. So this is the platter that you get for the slightly more expensive course. There is one course that’s a little bit more affordable and that one comes with six cuts of meat, which is this one right here. It looks so delicious. It’s a very similar platter, but it only has six different cuts of beef in it. Uh, but slightly more volume. And the reason is because this course only includes this platter of beef. So, if you’re if you’re wanting a course and you’re just like, I just want to grill meat, this is the one for you. But speaking of which, um, I’m going to continue grilling this up and then we have one last final dish to try out today. So, look forward to what that is. Oh, this looks so good. Oh my goodness. It’s got lots of tender meat, lots of rice, and even this crispy rice, too. Amazing. Yum. M. Ooh, that is super buttery and garlicky. I mean, they call it garlic rice for a reason. There’s so much garlic in there. It’s mixed in. There’s also some crispy garlic slices for some crunch. And the meat is so tender and melt in your mouth and just buttery. It’s like buttery little bits of crispy rice. The okog fantastic. So yeah, if this is something that suits your taste, this is a little sample of the course today. There’s still a little bit more involved, but if you’d like to try it and book it for yourself, it’s actually available on byfood.com very conveniently. So, you can scan the QR code on the screen and book it super easily in English. So, anyway, if you want to give this a try, scan the QR code or click the link in the bio to book. And I’m going to finish up my garlic rice and I’ll see you guys outside. Well, there you have it. Three restaurants you can enjoy here in Tokyo Station. from ramen on ramen street to super fresh sushi to even the only yakiniku restaurant inside the station. And I hope I was able to make it a bit easy to figure out how to find them because navigating Tokyo station is not easy even for locals like me. And I would recommend that you just ask some of the shopkeepers nearby cuz they’re usually very nice to help you get to where you’re going. So don’t forget to try that. And if you enjoyed this video and found it helpful, don’t forget to like, comment, share, and subscribe. And let me know if you want to see more videos like this navigating train stations. Maybe we can try Shinjuku next time. All right. Anyway, see you guys in the next video. Bye. If you enjoyed this video, click the photos on the left for more. 1. I recommend T’s Tantan if you are looking for vegan ramen in tokyo station, everyone in my family liked it more than other regulsr ramens we tried, we ended up coming back

  2. We were lucky enough to bump into Ms. Shiuka Anderson during this filming when we were in Japan. She was so gracious and nice to us plus our family got a photo with her. It was nice to see a fellow Canadian.

  3. Another wonderful video with great finds.
Thr foods you had today made my mouth water…lucky girl.
You are, by far, the best host on this channel!

  4. Thank you for all the work and information. Great way to start the week! Another Byfood video with Shizuka, even making videos in typhoons

  5. So much to see, do and eat in Tokyo Station! Thanks for introducing even more of it. Will try ramen street next time. And, love that dress Shizuka, looks great!!

  6. That last dish looked so good, I mean they all did (except I don't like seafood), but the rice and beef looked like total comfort food!

  7. I went to a stand up (rather than kaiten) sushi place last time I was in Tokyo-eki, after I went to a gift shop that stocks some of the Kit-Kats that are normally only available regionally, where the chef is stood in the centre and makes all the sushi fresh to order. Really good, though I don't know if I could find it again in the Tokyo station maze! If I remember right, it was a branch of the same sushi restaurant that is in the Atré just outside the Akiba station.
