Authorities in Japan’s southwestern Kumamoto Prefecture have issued a series of evacuation orders due to heavy rain, including an area that houses a factory operated by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.
Nine cities and towns in the prefecture on Kyushu island have been issued with a level 5 emergency alert, the highest warning that urges resident to seek safe shelter, according to the local government website. About 1,700 people had been evacuated as of 11 a.m. local time, public broadcaster NHK reported.
