I took an overnight bus from Tokyo to Osaka π
Is it worth taking an overnight bus from Tokyo to Osaka? One of my goals this year is to make more friends. So, I’m off to an event in Tokyo to try and do that. Tokyo is a 6-hour drive from Osaka, and the event finishes at 9:00 p.m. So, I figured I might as well save money on a hotel, hop on a bus, and then just wake up in Osaka. What could go wrong? I took the bullet train to Tokyo, which is I love the bullet train. It’s so fast and comfy. Just grabbing some souvenirs. I also made sure to grab a fun bento. Definitely the highlight of the ride, especially because Mount Fuji was being a bit invasive. Rude. Okay, easy part over. Getting off at Tokyo Station was triggering. The last time I was here, I got so lost. I thought I might never get out of the station. Tokyo station is so clean. I was so inspired by the cleanliness. I picked up this pen I found on the ground so I could throw it out. But I could not find a single bin. So now I’m just walking around with a pen I found on the ground. But look at this next train I’m taking. Tokyo is next level. This place is so fancy. Pen’s coming along for the ride. I guess it turns out I was sitting in the premium section making a run for it. Okay, I think I’m in the right section now. Don’t worry, I’ve still got the pen. Anyway, we have made it to Shibuya. [Music] Shibuya blows me away every time I come here. I live in a big city, but this place leaves me starruck every time. The event was super fun. It was at the Losa in Shibuya. Super cool place, and I love the view over Shibuya with the neon lights. Also, there’s a random shoe in the Gu sign opposite. I got to meet some beautiful people here, experience Shibuya at nighttime, and before I knew it, it was time for my overnight bus. This is the VIP liner plumeriia. Plumeriia. It cost me 80 bucks, but it has a toilet on board, and the seats are individual and it’s women only. It left Shinjuku at 11:25 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Osaka at 7:20 a.m. Pretty good, right? Except if you get this seat right at the front of the bus. Not to be dramatic, but I definitely got the worst seat on the bus. I kid you not, I felt like they just added this seat in here as a joke. I was in the middle of the walkway. People literally had to step over me to get on. The bus is super fancy, though. The seats on my left and my right got privacy curtains and I got this cover over my head. And then we were all asked to recline our seats at the same time, which was a detail I really appreciated. I always feel so awkward about reclining my seat, so to have it done in such an organized way was fantastic. The driver’s voice was also so soothing, and we even got an extra layer of darkness with these Velcro curtains at the front. The bus made a few stops along the way, and I use the chance to go to the bathroom. Japanese service areas are just next level, and they don’t feel sketchy at all, even in the middle of the night. I think I got about 3 hours of sleep, but we made it to Osaka. Was it worth it? I had so much fun. But what do you think?
It is worth taking an overnight bus from Tokyo to Osaka? π
I took a trip to the @lostbarjapan in Shibuya, Tokyo, to celebrate their one year anniversary.
And instead of booking a hotel afterwards, I decided to just take an overnight bus back to Osaka instead.
The bus is called the VIP Liner Plumeria.
It left Shinjuku at 11:25pm and arrived in Osaka at 7:20am.
It cost me about Β₯8000 (I assume prices vary)
It is a women-only bus.
There is a toilet onboard, and the seats are all separate.
We had three seats per row and two walkways πΊ.
There was also privacy curtains and a cover you could pull down over your head, so it actually got quite dark and quiet.
The only this is, you canβt pick your own seat (theyβre allocated) and the walkways are quite narrowβ¦
But the bus stopped 3 or 4 times, so I just used one of the astoundingly clean public toilets at the service areas instead of trying to squeeze my way through to the one on board.
The seats can recline quite a way back. They were comfier than an economy seat on the plane, but not as comfy as the bullet train π.
I arrived in Osaka, took a Power Nap, and was kinda functional for the rest of the day.
But what do you think? Would you take this bus?

I took 2 over night buses from Tokyo after landing at late night to Tokyo, 2 times rides both from Tokyo station to Osaka and Nagoya before, 1st experience ride to Osaka was bad, it was just a regular bus around $70ish, painful. I did swear I would never take that again. The 2nd time I had to do overnight because my event started super early morning in Ichi park near Nagoya with no over night Shinkansen (early Shinkansen also will not work since i would still be late for the even check in)thus overnight bus is the only option as flight But I did do my research and opt for a better recliner and private bus ride, I got the early bird deal so it was around $85ish(also canβt remember the exact amount but for sure under 100). I had the option to choose my seat, cornered and isolated from everyone. The seat can be reclined to about 160 degrees with legroom, seat built in partitions and charge like a massage chair( a little blanket was provided as well). Overall I had a good 5 hours sleep out of 6-7 bus ride to Nagoya. Only down side was thereβs no toilet, but the bus stops like 2-3 times, so it wasnβt that bad. I didnβt even need to take a break. And yes for both rides the bus driversβ voice are very soft and soothing.
So in total 12 hours flights and 7 hours bus ride to get to my destination.
I donβt recommend this for any folks with back pain or canβt sit for long, and definitely not right after a 12 hours flight landing, but for those who travel on a crunch time/schedule, this a a good option, I advise to look ahead of the route you want to take and bus schedule, because the recliner one I booked sold out within 24hrs. Also bring your own amenities or anything that help you sleep better, a thicker coat or blanket, eye mask, noise cancellation headphones and/or nasal congestion spray. Anything that help you sleep better is a plus, for both the flight and bus ride. π
Moral of the story: try to make money so maybe you can afford longer vacation time, or try to find a job that allows you longer vacation time to explore Japan at a relaxing pace. π
Casually drops that you went to an event at Chris Broad's bar, Lost. Funny that the shoe is still there! Looks like a fun trip Sunny! Glad you got a chance to network and make friends.
I've also taken overnight bus from Tokyo to Kyoto to save some money, but I realise that I had made no prep and couldn't sleep at all. It was rly comfy onboard, but the sleeplessness was hard π
Isn't flight from Tokyo to Osaka like $80 too? π
With overnight bus u save on hotel stay too.
Chris broad flexing those calves
Iβll be there in September, Iβll report more in the shoe status lol
