Visiting Japan’s HIDDEN art island | Naoshima Travel Vlog
[Music] visiting Japan’s art island. Now, yes, of course, here in Japan, there is an island dedicated entirely to art. There’s actually a bunch of them in this area, but the famous one is the island of Naoshima. Naoshima is off the coast of Okiyama in southern Japan. It is home to probably some of Japan’s most famous art. Even if you haven’t heard of Naoshima before, you’ve probably seen this art right here, the famous pumpkins. There’s a bunch of other famous artworks here as well. I’m hoping that by going to this island dedicated to art, full of art museums, I will be able to figure out how to appreciate art. How does one go to an art gallery and actually enjoy art instead of just being nervous that you’re not enjoying the art correctly? Maybe this is just anxiety things. I have a feeling I’m not the only person. Hello. In order to get to Japan’s Bart Island, it’s a little bit of a difficult experience. From Okyama, you have to take a local train, they only run about once an hour to the port of Uno. And from Uno, you have to take the ferry to Noshima. There are two options for fairies, as far as we can tell. The one that we took was 300 yen per person one way, which is only about $3. And the ferry ride will take about 20 minutes. Let’s do a quick little boat tour. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Hey, I want you to know you’re not the only one. Call me wherever you want. Just keep me entertained. Blame it on my ADHD. I can’t focus on you lately. I want you to know you haven’t been on my mind. We did it. This pumpkin means we must be in the right place. We were afraid we got on the wrong ferry for a minute, but we found a pumpkin. So, we must be in the right place hopefully. Hotel tour. We’ve got first door on the left. Bathroom. Sink. Japanese toilet. It’s got the wall panel. That’s how you know it’s good. Shower. And then next door as you come in bedroom. We’ve got separate beds as always because that’s just the way they do it in Japan. For some reason, no one sleeps together. We’ve got what’s in this room doesn’t open. Okay, we’ll never find out. But the best part about this room, look at that view. That’s largely why we picked this accommodation. It had decent reviews, but it has a good view and it’s a little bit out of the way. We had to walk up quite the hill to get here, but it’s not super dingeed, which the other options kind of were. So, now we’re going to eat our convenience store dinner and I will check back in with all of you in the morning for some art. Hello, [Music] We just finished at Coochie Art Museum. No filming inside obviously, but it was honestly pretty incredible. Mindboggling. There was a lot of concrete. There was Monae paintings in there. It was quite the experience. I think it was worth the money. I think it was about $20 per person. Definitely need to reserve ahead of time. We’re here very much offseason, so a lot of stuff is closed and we were able to book all this last minute, but if you were doing this in a peak time, you would definitely want to book. Now we are off to the next art museum. Le Uon I believe. We’ll see how we go. We are walking everywhere. You can ride a bike here, but walking is doing us just fine so far. [Music] We just went to Lewon Gallery. It was about $10 per person. So, a bit cheaper than the other one, but I don’t know if I would recommend it. It’s only the second one of the day. So, the first one was definitely better, though. Like 10 out of 10. The second one I give like five out of 10. Now, we’re going to Beny Gallery, which is I think a a big complex where they have a hotel and a bunch of other stuff, but we’re just going to the art gallery. [Music] So, this is just a piece of art that we’ve stumbled across, but it is the cultural melting bar, which includes a jacuzzi, which is not on right now, sadly. How cool is that? The island itself has a lot of art as you just like walk around. So you don’t have to go into like the art galleries to see stuff. We’re also on the beach which is absolutely gorgeous. Look at this view. [Music] Shake. Shake. Can’t you? [Music] Oh, it’s so bright out here now. We just went in Minami. It was awesome. It’s such a cool experience. Honestly, I think I understand art now. We’re getting there. We’re getting there, besties. They basically plunge you into like total darkness. It’s kind of crazy, but good. Now, we shall continue. We’re on the other side of the island today, day two, and we have hired a bike so that we can go to all the little art house. And we had a timed entry for this one for 10:35. So, we had to come here. We are going to go to the other ones hopefully before they close for lunch. And then we’ll figure it out from there. [Music] [Applause] [Music] We’ve done it. We made it to the iconic yellow pumpkin. It’s definitely not the best lighting for it, unfortunately. But it’s still pretty good. I mean, maybe a little overrated. Maybe I’ve just seen so much art today. Maybe I’m an art snob now, Josh. Maybe you’ve you’ve like gained XP points and now you’re now you’re an art. I’m an art critic now. The art island has shown me the way. It has. Heat. [Music] Heat. [Music] If you know, you know.
Today I’m sharing one of my favourite places! Off the coast of Japan, between Osaka and Hiroshima, is an island dedicated entirely to art! Come along for the adventure 🙂
