Dōgo Onsen is a symbol of Japan’s oldest hot spring resorts, boasting a history of about 3,000 years. It is one of the most renowned hot springs, appearing in both the *Manyoshu* and the *Nihon Shoki*.
Among them, the current Dōgo Onsen Honkan, built in 1894 (Meiji 27), has a majestic presence with its grand three-story wooden structure in traditional Japanese style, so much so that it’s hard to believe it is a public bathhouse.日本語に
It can be quite enjoyable to experience all three uniquely styled hot spring facilities in one visit. The other two—Asuka-no-Yu and Tsubaki-no-Yu—are also public bathhouses, and it’s a pleasant surprise that you can bathe there for just a few hundred yen.
After strolling through the souvenir shops and commercial facilities right in front of the Dōgo Onsen Honkan, if you have some extra time, why not visit Isaniwa Shrine? It’s about a five-minute walk from the Honkan, located atop a flight of 135 steps.
Like Dōgo Onsen, the shrine has a long and storied history and is regarded as a kind of “guardian deity” of the area. Its brilliant vermilion-lacquered buildings exude a solemn atmosphere, reminiscent of shrines in Kyoto.
