🚢 The End… A 10 Day Journey | Hakodate, Japan | Villa Vie Odyssey | Ep 130
[Music] Hey friends, I’m Steve. And I’m Angela. And we are Midlife Cruising. We live fulltime on the Villa Odyssey residential cruise ship and we travel the world and share all things cruise life and all things cruise ports. Today we find ourselves in Hakodate, Japan and we are currently in a capsule store. Everything in here is about $3. It’s think a gumball machine. U so for 400 yen, which is around $3, you can get all kinds of things. In today’s video, we’re going to take you along here in Hakadate, Japan. So, come along. Well, a very good morning to everyone out there in YouTube land. It is Thursday the 7th, and we are no longer on our crossing. We are in Hakadate, Japan, and I am headed to breakfast. So, let’s take a look out there. All right, here we are. Okay, so we just exited the ship. We’re in Japan, Ohio. Good morning. And Steve has to duck under the tent. You know, being 6’2 in Japan is going to be interesting. Show them you duck. We’re in this long tent and it’s probably just above Steve’s height. We’re so excited to be here. 10day crossing. Here we are. Let’s do this. So, people often ask about visas and immigration. So, we were given forms in Japanese and English to fill out. And right now we’re going to go through the customs process where we give them our customs form, immigration card, and stamp stamp. And we off we go. Super simple. Welcome to Hakodate, Ohio. All right, we are directly across the uh cruise terminal and we are in the morning market here in Hakadate and it looks like it has everything. So, let’s check it out. The Hakodate Morning Market, a sprawling marketplace, is a must visit for food lovers and culture enthusiasts. Spanning 33,000 square meters with over 250 shops, it’s a vibrant hub for fresh seafood, local produce, and Hakadaki specialties. I’m a crab. Well, and as you can see, we are docked right here in town in Hagadate. So, capsule toys are all over. I see 400 yen on most of them, which is about $3. I see some for 300 yen. Like, we probably should buy one, but we’ll probably have to go get some money first. [Music] Look at this. [Music] It’s [Music] like a $4. You know how to pick the best tasting. [Music] Come on. nice. [Music] [Music] So, we are in Lawson. It’s one of the three most famous convenience stores in all of Japan. 7-Eleven is another one. So, we’ve been walking around just checking everything out and we just finished the morning market and the first thing I noticed cleanliness and politeness. There’s no bumping and pushing and everyone’s patient and takes their time. Hey, friend. You run into VV people everywhere. brand and latte is South Korea’s most famous chocolate. [Music] [Music] So, in all of our research, everyone says 7Elevens are amazing. They even have amazing food. Make sure you try the egg sandwich. We have a month to do that, so we definitely will, but we have to check out 7-Eleven. [Music] All right. Okay. Well, they sell bourbon and 7-Eleven here, so I’m liking it. We are not moving to Japan, friend. Come on, get on Zillow. So, they have tofu bars. I heard all about these also in 7-Eleven. This one happens to be chocolate cake flavored tofu. This one is sweet potato. And they’re about 136 US. And I will be trying one of these. This 10 pack of eggs, just for reference here on pricing, is $2.33. Here’s the famous egg sandwich. 248 yen, which is $168. This one has fruit and cream in it. So excited. Okay, thank you. Bye. All right. Well, that was our experience here at 7-Eleven. I never thought a convenience store would be so much fun. And I chose the chocolate cake flavored tofu. Here we go. We’re going to try it. Chocolate cake flavored tofu. You’re not supposed to walk and eat. And I already forgot on day one. We’ll get better because we want to respect the customs. And as far as the taste goes, it’s like a chocolate cake that didn’t get enough sugar or a low like a sugar low sugar chocolate cake is what it tastes like. Very interesting. But I could see that. Um nice smooth texture. Yeah. Covering your craving if you needed something. And a little healthier, of course. Look what’s right here. So pretty. [Music] Most popular Kit Kat. flavor is matcha. I heard there was 88 different Kit Kat flavors here. So, we have to try matcha because they say it’s the number one most popular. What better thing to do on a rainy day than do a little shopping? The red brick warehouses in Hakadate are a cluster of historic buildings rebuilt in 1909 after a fire. These waterfront structures, now a popular tourist destination, house a variety of shops, restaurants, and cafes. Hakodate, a port city in southern Hokkaido, is known for its rich history, stunning night views from Mount Hakodate, and delicious seafood. It was one of the first Japanese cities to open to foreign trade, resulting in a unique blend of Japanese and Western architecture. Visitors can explore historic districts, enjoy panoramic city views, and savor fresh seafood. Established in 1869, Hakadate Goku Shrine honors the war dead from various conflicts, including the Battle of Hakadate, the SinoJapanese War, the Russo Japanese War, End World War II. Look at this giant parking lot for bicycles. In 1860, this church was built as a chapel attached to the first Russian consulate. The official name is Hakodate Russian Orthodox Church Holy Resurrection Cathedral. We are so wet. We’re like drowned rats out here. But we’re having a good time. Oh my gosh. What is this? You’ll never believe what kind of beer that they have here in Japan. It is good old Budweiser. Let’s give it a shot. Cheers, friends. [Music] Oh, that crisp, clean, clear taste. But wait, tastes like it’s been aged in beachwood. I’ll give this one about a 5.0. [Music] All right. Well, I’m lucky we got here early because there’s a line out the door now. And uh we both had chicken sandwiches, a beer, and a ginger ale, and it was $11.52. So quite affordable. And it’s world famous, and they’ve won tons of awards. So when in Hakadote, go to Lucky Perau. Look at my friend in the tank behind me. Well, I hope you enjoyed our first day here in Japan after our 10 sea days to get here. It rained all day, but you know what? That’s okay. It’s been amazing. The people are friendly, very polite. Everything’s very clean, calm, peaceful. Those are the words I would use to describe Hakadate. Uh just a beautiful day. Thank you so much. A big shout out for all those who sent a super thanks for buying me a coffee. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. As always I enjoy your videos. I am looking forward to see more of Japan.
Konichiwa
Gachipon is fun but get your butts to 7-11… great food, coffee and rice balls
And you really need to be careful filming and ask permission.. it’s a courtesy thing there
Whatever you do eat their sweet potatoes… even the ones from don Quixote in the front of the store are delicious… they need nothing on them
What a beautiful city! So fun!
2 questions- did you feel off balance or funny after being at sea for 10 Days?
– what kind of shoes do you both wear- you do so much walking
Glad to see you💕
Are you going to Okinawa? If so, get away from Naha port if you can. Find the countryside and the most beautiful beaches you’ve ever seen.
Loved seeing your first visit in Japan. Good to see the walking feet again.
Enjoy Japan. What a wonderful time of touring Japan ahead. Rain, who cares, when there is exploring to do.
I can't wait to show my kids all of the treats. You don't even know how many Asian snacks they find on the internet and in the Asain supermarkets around here.
YAAAAAY! I'm so glad you all made it safe and sound across the Pacific Ocean. Looking forward to seeing all the adventures you're going to continue to have. 🤗
Lawson’s was a convenient store back in Ohio.
I’m so happy I have found your channel. I love to travel. I have learned a lot from your streams.
I am sure it's nice to get off the ship after a long Pacific Ocean crossing. I love your channel and dream to join the ship in a couple of years. I was surprised by the affordable prices in Japan! The yen rate has increased significantly since the time when I was stationed there.
Is it a safe guess that the primary draw is the various places you get to visit as opposed to living on the ship?
Loved the video and spending a day in Japan!!
Very interesting video. I’d heard of the 7 eleven there so glad you went there. Have fun!
I’m so looking forward to your adventures in Japan. They have very interesting stores. Glad you are trying different foods to share your experiences with us. Happy travels.
Hey Friends… thanks for braving the rain and getting off the boat🎉. It was nice to see the town.
Beautiful 😍 I need all the Hello Kitty things🤣
Years ago my husband and I were in Hakodate. We took a cable car to the top of the mountain at night. The view of the city and harbor lit up at night was spectacular.
Thank you for another great video ❤and taking us along! 👍🫶🏻🙌
Great video !! Do you guys keep any paper money or coin from all the countries you are going to ?
Very nice..Been to Osaka many years ago. When we go ashore customs not checking..when going back onboard customs will check our bags..Cheers from TT
We had a Lawson down the street when I was young (70’s). I haven’t seen one in the states since. I went to Japan in 1987 and saw them then. Have a great trip. (7/11 down my street now 😊)
So in fact your journey to Japan ends but not the journey at all….please avoid clickbate……
Yay, you made it!! Japan looks amazing, I can’t wait to see more. How long will you be there for?
The red brick market looked like a place I could spend too much time spending money. Japan is very serene.
I lived in Japan from 1956-1958. I still remember so much of it. My dad was in the Navy. My mother loved Japan so much that she was upset to leave. She took us to see and do everything we could. I still have many mementos, including a kimono that was made specifically for me. I think you will never forget this wonderful, unique place. Have fun and again, thank you for taking us along. 👘 P.S. I love all of the churches!
Good video in the rain. Like historic commentary.
Gurl, you are just KNOCKIN the pronunciations out of the park — both of you are! Haha well, sounds like it to me anyway! 😀
Beautiful Enjoy ❤🙏😊
We visited Hakodate this year as part of our cruise from Japan to Alaska ending in Vancouver (with six sea days). We loved Hakodate. It was still cherry blossom season so far north in Japan when we were there but it rained as much as it obviously did while you were there. Such an interesting city where East meets West. Enjoy Japan – I just love it.
How was the Kit Kat, is not my favourite flavour.
Love all your videos! Have fun in Japan!
So happy to visit your first port in Japan with you! It seemed very peaceful and quiet. Was it hot there? The rain makes everything look chilly but I read that it’s very hot in the summer. It would be interesting if you could include temperatures on your videos. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for bringing us with you. I enjoy all your videos.
"Iii'm a craaaab!" 🦀🤣
HaHa! You deserved to get a thick slice of double or triple layer chocolate cake to make up for trying the chocolate tofu!
Thanks for sharing. Happy travels!
Really enjoyed the video. Japan looks amazing.
Ooh love this video. Hokkaido has fantastic seafood. The food in Japan is amazing… always beautifully packaged as well, even quick meals at convenience stores . Try the mochi.. it’s so yummy (sweet). Pity it was rainy. Hope you guys get lots of time to explore Japan. They have the coolest Snoopy stuff. I am a big Snoopy fan 😬. ❤❤
Hello friend. loved seeing you in Japan can’t wait to see more.
Anyone happen to know what the range of the ship is before refueling?
A black umbrella and a clear umbrella on the same day,…
