Hokkaido to Implement Accommodation Tax from April 2026

Hokkaido will implement an accommodation tax starting from April 2026. The Minister of Internal Affairs has agreed based on the Local Tax Law.

The accommodation tax rates are set at 100 yen per person per night for accommodation fees under 20,000 yen, 200 yen for fees between 20,000 yen and 50,000 yen, and 500 yen for fees over 50,000 yen. It will be specially collected.

The projected revenue is approximately 4.48 billion yen. Participants in school trips and events at certified children’s centers and nurseries will be exempted from the tax. The estimated collection cost is approximately 320 million yen.
