Trying Kyoto’s Sweet Street – Matsubara Dori Food Adventure!
Welcome back to our Japan vlog series. In today’s video, we get to try a ton of different foods, go to the famous Matsubara Dori, and experience Japan’s amazing culture. So, without further ado, enjoy the video. [Applause] So, we started our day by going to this really awesome Japanese Italianstyle restaurant. We don’t have very much footage of the store because they asked us respectfully to be discreet, but we do have our reactions to the amazing food. Check it out. Thank you. That’s it for me. You go ahead. No, we’ll just go back around. So, sometimes they’ll run out of things on the menu and there’s nothing you can do about that. So, you just got to order something else. I ended up getting the mushroom uh tomato the mushroom tomato pasta. Squid. It’s not squid. Mushroom tomato pasta. Just mushrooms tomato pasta. Um and then uh yeah, they have any fried squid, which is kind of a bummer, but it is what it is. So, now we’re going to wait for our food. And I have a feeling that this food is going to be excellent. So, yeah, it’s a Japanese take on Italian food, which Japan basically can’t do any wrong at this point. So, we’ll we’ll see. Obviously, it’s going to have a different flavor profile than if you went to like Italy or even if you had like American Italian, then it’s it’s going to be different. I would assume that it might be even a little bit sweeter cuz they tend to have more like sweetness, not like sugar, but like just overall sweetness to their dishes. Japanese don’t like the pasta as sweet we’ve or like they don’t like things as sweet as um South Korea. Whenever we were in South Korea, it felt like everything was really sweet. Like the bread at Isaac Toast was sweet. Um a lot of the pastas that we had there were sweet. every even the pizza whenever we went to pizza. We got a four cheese pizza and it came with honey for the crust like how you get at a you know Mexican restaurant for soapas. So which do they like a lot of things sweet so and so Japan is not so much has not been quite so much like that. Normally we we have been and you see on the vlog we’ve been trying authentic Japanese restaurants that have authentic stuff that’s made directly in Japan. and it’s by Japanese people and it’s for Japanese people. So, that’s what we’ve been trying to do. We also want to give a little bit of spice or difference to um the vlog by showing their take on the Italian, you know, or or American, you know, whichever ones we try. like if we decide to try let’s say for instance maybe a McDonald’s or a a KFC or something like that. It’s it’s literally just the take of that culture on what those foods would taste like or what they are here. So um and in general we have come across pretty good tasting food from those those different areas. So that’s what we’re doing. [Music] She’s the sweetest. Our server is so nice. She’s she’s pretty awesome. Yo, and that is her real voice. She greeted us and everything has been like consistently that way. I also love it’s a it’s kind of a u I don’t even know how you say it. It’s kind of a just a cool little side note. Every time that they give you like the check for your table or anything like that, they always put it like face down. Like whenever they bring you your check in America, it’s either in like a closed like booklet or something like that. Or if it is, they put it like face up so that you can read it all like from where you’re sitting. Here in Japan, every time that they put your your check, they always put it face down like towards the table so you can look at it whenever you’re ready. Like they’re not trying to rush you. I think that’s what it’s supposed to signify is like, hey, it’s here on the table right where you are, but you don’t have to look at it until you’re ready, which is again just a cool little side piece. Coming. They also, a lot of the restaurants have like these QR codes for ordering. Um, this one did have one. This one did have a QR code. Um, but we weren’t able to use it. Whenever we went to use it, it um asked for the language obviously, so we put English. And then we try to put the people, it asks for the people in our party, so we put four and it was like unable to order, call your server. So we tried to switch it to Japanese. Um, that still didn’t help. So sometimes our ordering doesn’t work. And so you have to call your server. But it’s easy. The hostess did let us know though that that was when we came in to try to do it that way. And if it works, great. If it doesn’t, just let her know and she’ll come to the table and take our order. It’s no big deal. Yeah. This is the Caesar salad that I ordered. Looking delicious. That garlic bread smells awesome. And this got to be careful with this one. Is the garlic bread. You can kind of Yum. Smells good so far. I don’t know what these little seeds are on it. I bet you they’re u delicious though. Cayenne. No, they’re they look like mustard. Red pepper flake. Nope. No. Looks like there’s some cheese inside. We could have one of those a piece whenever our food gets here. Yeah. I’m excited to try this. I’m getting excited. Our server is so nice. Oh, they gave you one. Okay. All right. What is it? It’s called a rice croquette, but I think it’s basically like the Italian what an Italian would call an aranchi. I think it’s all the same. I’m so excited to see how it digs in. Oh, it’s coming up. Look at that. Wow. Wow. That looks amazing. down. Yum. Get some juice. Get a nice scoop in there. Get a little bit of air in there. Get it all in there. I can tell it’s going to be hot. Ready? Mhm. [Music] So good. This is so good. Is it good? Is it so good? I have almost tears. It’s so good. Like, and I was not expecting much because like we said, it’s Japanese Italian. Wow. It’s not. The staff is Japanese, but that cook is Italian. Like, that cook is Italian. So good. So good. Everybody get a fork and try some. He’s got some Italian blood in him. Editor, cut this out. You mean? Yeah. The guy who’s about to eat. All right. Going in. [Music] M. Is it coated? Wa. That is very good. I’ve had an archi in in Italy. That that is like a That is better than I Okay, I won’t say better. It’s like a lot of flavor at once. It’s so good. It’s very Try it. You want to try it? Oh, here we go. Here we go. Here we go. Holy cow. That was just delivered to the table. I mean, look at that. Special. Special. Holy. You got a margarita, didn’t you? That one is mine, I think. The mushroom. Is this one yours? Switching. Oh, yeah. That’s right. That’s right. Look at this, though. Z, tell them what this is. That is mushroom pasta with tomato paste. It is hot on the bottom. Wow. Yeah. Look at this, guys. This is a margarita. Of course. Margarita. Just exactly what you think that it is. I am so excited. No fish, no meat, it says, which of course is amazing. Oh my god. It even comes with like its own little slicer. Uh-huh. Yeah. These are little tiny mushrooms. Look at that. That’s a cute little mushroom right there. See? Is it squid? Yeah. This is squid right here. Oh, [Music] that’s like you can’t see everybody, but they can see me in Z. Yeah, that’s some of the best Italian food I’ve ever had in my life. That thing over there is like the creme de la creme. It’s so good. If y’all haven’t tried that yet. I mean, wow. This stuff is amazing. It’s so good. And there’s one more pizza coming. Is there really? It’s mine. Yeah. The pepperoni sauce. This I’m not trying to exaggerate or like glaze Japan or anything, but this is genuinely some of the best Italian food I’ve ever had. Like that is amazing. Mhm. How do they get that much flavor in that? I don’t know. Wow. It is called pizza. No, it’s on the front, but it says something. Oh, there’s more. Oh, that’s the pepperoni. Oh my god. Spicy. Like we are food vloggers. We know this is a lot of food. That bad guy in the middle pushing us. [Music] Too much. for the pick. Thank you. All right. We didn’t even get pictures of this, Chad. Chad, you’ll never believe it. There’s more food. Much food. Yeah. Look at this. Look at all the food we got. We managed to fit it all here. I’m going to put this. This is my hand for reference. I love that they give you your own like little That’s actually not that bad of a camera angle. Really? Yeah. They let you cut your own pizza. Mhm. Those are some of the freshest ingredients. This doesn’t even taste like Japanese style Italian. This tastes like Italy last year. Mhm. This tastes like spot on actually. Here, let me show you guys this other pasta that I got it as well. Wait. You got a two scale. It’s so good every time. Every bite. Oh yeah. Now you can do that. Looks crazy. They did say that you can pick it from either a one to a three on the spice meter. I don’t play around whenever it comes to spice and I don’t think the Japanese do either. So whenever they say it’s a three, it’s probably more like a four, but I picked a two because I do like a little bit of of heat to my my pasta especially. Actually, I’m a big spice guy whenever it comes to pasta. The pizza sauce is a little bit sweet, but overall it’s amazing. Thank you very much. That’s the thing about Japan. You guys have seen from yesterday’s vlog as well. They are a society that um unless you ask them to be on camera, they don’t want to be on camera, which is totally acceptable. I get it 100%. Um, in America, we all like to be on camera, but it’s about being friendly and being courteous. So, if they don’t want to be on camera, then of course don’t put them on camera. Yeah, I’m not a big fan of the onions. That’s one thing I’ll say. That’s just cuz I’m just not a big fan of onions. I love the vibe in here, too. They’re playing like cool Italian music. You guys are eating so fast. I got to pick up my pace a little bit. It’s more so like about freeing up table space at this point. It’s just It’s good. It’s just not my sling. It’s not like It’s got onions on it and stuff. How is your margarita? It’s amazing, actually. It’s like It is one of the best margaritas I’ve ever had in my life. There isn’t really much of a crisp to the bottom. I know a lot of people like a little bit of like char or something to the bottom of their dough, but actually the char is on the top of the dough. So like where all the ingredients and everything like that, they have bubbles that form and that’s where the char kind of kind of starts out. But that’s kind of how I like my pizza. Dang it. I got some tomato sauce on my shirt. I have to buy a whole new wardrobe. Every box. No, that’s okay. It’ll wash out. That other one that I got a stain on wasn’t that bad. Yeah. I don’t know if you guys heard mom though. Of course, we’re back in Yodabashi. This is on floor 6 along with every other restaurant that we’ve had in the past like three vlogs. It’s really close to our hotel, so we like to start the day eating and then go explore all day. Yeah, cuz you guys are going to see this one real quick. Let me show you guys this. This looks insane. I mean, you can even see they put the whole pepper on the top of this guy. I’m going to eat that. No, I’m just kidding. You’ll probably die. Mhm. I’m just kidding. Let me go ahead and get into this. I just finished off my pasta. That was so good. Okay. Get you a nice spoonful. Of course, that is a very chunky portion. It’s got a little bit of everything onto it. It’s tomato. It is uh tomato and garlic, which again, like I said, it’s on that two spice meter. So, to the teeth, to the gums. Like I said, M. Is it good? It’s spicy, huh? It is very hot, actually. But Oh, dang. Oh, it’s impressive. Yeah, there’s like so much flop. Yeah, guys. Wow. You can taste all the flavors coming through. It is very righteous whenever it comes to the garlic. It is very spicy. The tomato is kicking. Of course, I think every dish that they have here that has some kind of tomato to it, I mean, it’s going to be hot. You can tell that it has like u man that is phenomenal. The the pasta itself is cooked like perfectly al dente. It’s not too hard. It doesn’t have any crunch to it of course. And it’s not like overly done that it’s just like basically turns into mesh in your mouth which is nasty. But this is perfectly done. Look at that. Phenomenal. Phenomenal. That one is better. Yeah. Here. Let me show you guys. Look. I can’t. This is like maybe this is a real piece of garlic. Like they put like big healthy chunks. So, of course, this shirt is such after you get done eating this bowl right here, probably go back to your hotel room and probably uh brush your teeth because your breath is going to be just as hot actually as the Boston. So, make sure to stop by Donote and maybe get yourself like a new toothbrush because holy cow, a breath mint, maybe some kind of something, man. You’re going to need something. This is good. Yeah, it’s good. It was excellent. The mushroom pasta, bro. It’s so good. I get five big booms. No, I’m kidding. That is really good, though. Yeah. I don’t know really what is on top. It looks like mustard seeds. You guys can see these like little flakes. I thought they were originally like not paprika, but uh like chili flakes cuz of course whenever they make things spicy, I know that they do that, but Mom is almost ripe. Actually, it almost looks like mustard seeds. Man, we got the whole table about to die and fall over to borrow the place where we’re going after. They have like street foods that we want to try. Stain pepperoni design shirt. No, that thing is done. It’s always the littlest tiniest little things. We got spaghetti sauce on his on a brand new white shirt. In fairness, he didn’t know we weren’t eating Italian whenever he put on that shirt. So, he did not plan accordingly. Yeah. We’re going to go get some stain river and try to get that out. And he’ll change his clothes, I guess. Show them your shirt. Oh, yeah. You got to show them the the destruction. Take the camera. Here’s the big old stain right here. You guys can see it. Riperoni. Pepperoni. Looks amazing. Don’t hold the camera. The handle’s probably getting hot. Oh. Oh. So, the name of that restaurant is called Capri Kosa. Um, yeah. So, if you’re ever in Kyoto, come to Yabashi. Eat there. It’s amazing. Also, we forgot to say it before we even started filming in there this morning. But, good morning. Welcome back to Kyoto. It’s one of those things that you have to That’s how we start off every vlog, and you guys know it well and true. Good morning. So, we’re going to head back to the hotel just really fast, literally for like 5 minutes because I have to brush my teeth after that. Uh because I’m going to be walking around with horse deer meat on my tongue for the entire day. What was that? Horse what meat? What did you say, little bro? Z has to get this stain off of his shirt. The cheese stain. The tomato stain. The cheese stain. We’re going to go down to level one. That’s obviously where Yeah. We got to go to the pharmacy section. I don’t think we’re going to record all that, but maybe I’ll just buy a new shirt while I’m here. when we go back to the hotel room. Maybe we’ll record a little bit and then get started for the day and then whenever we get back outside the hotel, you guys will see us back on the camera for real. So, we’ll catch you guys then. Bang. Okay, welcome back to the hotel room. Zion is going to uh change his shirt real quick and I have to brush my teeth. So, come along with me because holy cow hot breath over here. Holy cow, hot breath over here. Say, can I put you up here? Nope. Oh, that’ll do. That’ll do. Okay, so like we said guys, we’re going to some kind of uh like park or something like that. It’s about a 16-minute walk is what mom said to us um whenever we were starting the day before we turned on the camera, of course, cuz we had a late start. That’s kind of why you saw us start today’s vlog. Um inside the restaurant and not outside where we usually start it is like the the crosswalks or anything like that. And we give our usual good morning. You know what I’m talking about? But today is going to be a good day. I can tell it. I feel it in my blood. My back doesn’t hurt. I took my Zerek for the day. Um, as you guys saw in yesterday’s vlog, I got Zerek because holy cow, bro. My nose is like just off, bro. My nose and my eyes. Thank God, bro. I got to get all that garlic off my tongue. Still extremely tasty pasta. Extremely tasty margarita pizza. I know everyone is going to be like, “Why’d you only get a margarita? Why’ you not get like the anchovies and garlic and dude? Let me have nice things.” Okay, door closed. Yes, that what she said. Door closed. How does it make you feel like I’m going to cut to the outside? Okay, so we are at uh Masubra Street which is famous very famous in Kyoto. It is basically like what the equivalent is of Nakamise Dori in Tokyo um to sensi. So this um street is full of uh vendors, souvenirs, street food, art work, cultural spots, things like that, parks, and you can rent kimonos and come up and you know do like the whole cultural experience thing. Um but yeah, if you’ve ever been to Suji um or Nakamich in Tokyo, then it would be the same thing as that but for Kyoto Kyoto’s version. And so we’re super excited to walk around, look around, see what’s here, see all the people dressed up in their little kimonos. And um it’s very cool looking. So yeah, I’ve already seen like a ton of people in kimonos walking around and they look really cool in them. So I’m like, man, I’m going to get one. Not one. You’re going to get a kimono. Maybe we’ll we’ll see. But um yeah, it’s a cool experience so far. We’re going to kind of show you guys some of the shops that we go into and look at. Some of these shops have really crazy things inside of them. And like when I mean crazy, I mean like the stuffs that you wouldn’t normally find in regular shops and stuff, so maybe we’ll have to show you that. Yeah, we’re going to go looking around and finding stuff, exploring. Yeah, we won’t make our way all the way up to the temple because that’s just not something that we do. Um we’re basically just here for the Mat Street to see that part of it. So yeah, but we’ll we’re excited. So, let’s let’s head out. Let’s do it. So, right now we are standing in line to get some ice cream. Ice cream looks pretty good. It looks like it it’s got some uh funny little like figures inside of it. Look, I’ll show you guys. Baby Castella. This place is called Baby Castella. Baby Castella. Yeah. So, we’re about to try the ice cream here. See what it’s like. Looks like they’ve got a couple different flavors. So, yeah. When we get some, I’ll show you it to you guys and we will give it a taste. All right. What’s up, everybody? So, right now, we’re at this place that you saw in the last clip. Uh they also have boba cuz I wasn’t feeling too much like uh like ice cream or anything like that. Anything in a waffle, so I got boba. This is matcha, which if you guys have watched the vlogs before, you know that I love matcha. Matcha is like one of my favorite things to drink. So, to the teeth, to the gums, you know what I’m saying? gums. Oh yeah. Is it good? Oh yeah. Oh yeah. That’s Yeah. It’s It’s amazing. I mean, it’s it’s very sweet. These are tapioca pearls on the bottom. They’re not like popping or bursting boba like normal. Um but it’s very sweet. It’s very nice. They even put a little bit of this like I don’t know if you can see it on top of the whipped cream is a little bit of these uh matcha sprinkles. So it’s really nice. It’s very sweet, but that’s what I like. All right. What’d you get? I got a strawberry soft with a little bear donut. Let’s try that first. So, it’s a donut, but it looks like a bear and it has rock crystal on it. It’s a donut. Mhm. Turn around. See what you think. Oh, yeah. It’s like a little donut on top with some ice cream. Okay, let’s keep walking. Yeah, this place is super busy, super packed. So, we’re going to have to kind of cut in and out of recording. Wait, try to guess where we are in this picture. Yep, that’s right. We’re standing right over there where one of the coolest interactions that we’ve had in Japan so far took place. Check it out. Go ahead. Where are you from? These are our new friends. We’re from America. We’re from the US. What’s your name? My name is Rowan. What surprised do you do? What surprised you the most in Japan? Oh, what surprised us? What surprised us? The food. The food. The food. And it’s it’s very clean. Japan is very clean. What’s your hobby? Traveling. Traveling. We go all over the world. Video games. Yeah, video games. Yeah, video games. Video games. Nintendo Switch. Yeah. What’s Do you like game name game name? What’s like what’s the what’s the name of a game that you like? Mario Kart. Mario Kart 8. Oh, Super Smash Bros. Do you like the anime anime? I like anime. I do. Attack on Titan. Mhm. Um they have kametio ya together. You want to take a picture of us? Yeah. Yeah. One, two, three. [Applause] So cool. So cool. Those kids are trying to learn English. So they go to super heavy tourist spots and places that they think that like Americans or like people who are either from America or even just speak something other than Japanese. And they ask them questions. I tried my best to obviously vlog it, but that is super cool. They carry around a little notebook and the notebook has questions in it and they have to try and say those questions in English which super cool. I’ve seen that on other vlogs on the YouTube channel. Is it There you go. Bye. Bye. Bye. Yeah. So cool. How was that experience? You like that? That was so cool. That was so sick. Actually, the people at Japan, which is so nice, so sweet, so welcoming. That’s what I tried to tell them is that that notebook that they’re reading off of is in English. Yeah. They’re they’re trying to learn English and so they try to meet English speakers to ask questions to find out where they’re from. Like that’s just amazing what and the teachers that are with them so friendly. Like wow. Yeah. I’m trying to learn Japanese whenever I get back, but I don’t know if I’ll have such a luxury as as going out into tourist places. No, we don’t. Not nearly as much. That is so that was that was so You have to live You have to live in a place like New York or maybe California to get as much exposure to foreign languages. Yeah, we live in a little town in Texas. It would never happen. That’s cool, though. But that was so cool. So, we’re going to keep going. Obviously, if anything else happens, like interactions or anything like that, we’ll definitely let you guys see them. But they just randomly came up to us and they were like they were like they said, “Do you have do you speak English?” They said, “Do you have time?” Like, “Do you have a couple minutes?” That’s so cool. That was so cool. Okay, we’re gonna keep going, guys. Okay, so I just got this 300 yen pickle. This cucumber. It’s like a English cucumber. They had it in like a lemon brine. I don’t know. I love cucumbers, so hopefully this is good, right? You hate cucumbers. Yep. Give it a try. Oh. Oh, this is a visceral reaction. It’s so salty. Oh, it’s salty. Wow. Okay. It’s not that it’s bad. So, it’s more like a pickle. No. No. Extremely salty. Tastes like salty. Salty. Salty. Salted lemon. Salty. Salty. Salty. Salted. Salty. Salted lemon. You have to really love cucumber and salt. I’m going decapitated by somebody’s umbrella. I mean, it’s okay. Only 300. Again, if you take tiny bites, it’s a lot easier. Yeah. I’m going to try to to shove it down. All right. Yeah. So, we’re going to keep walking around. He’s not going to try it for I will not be trying that, but I might be trying some other stuff down here. So, yeah, we’ll just keep going and walking and trying it out. Turn around. Oh, sorry. What you think, Ruin? Beautiful. It’s probably one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to in my life. Kyoto. Oh, Kyoto. Yep. Kyoto, Japan. You ever seen those like millennial or like like boomer post where they’re like the the camera angle is always like Okay. Um Yeah. Let’s get some of this. The white ones. Yeah. Okay. I think we’ll take one cup of this kind of. Okay. Five. Huh? Oh, yeah. Just one. Oh. Um. Okay. All right. Literally right here in a crazy doorway. All right. So, let’s just We can do it right here. Okay. So, what’s up everybody? Welcome back. Uh, we didn’t do a proper introduction back, but yeah, we’ve been walking around eating a bunch of things, trying a bunch of different things, uh, getting souvenirs, all the above. Everything, everything, everything. So, as you can see right now, we have these are N straw. Beautiful little N strawberries. Yeah, they look so good. They’re even though we’re in Kyoto. You can tell because of the uh like the color of them. So, they’re like a little bit more pink than a regular strawberry. White at the bottom. And we got we got condensed milk over them. So, we’re going to try these out and see what they’re like. Do you want me to go? Okay. Give it a try. Tell them what you think. M. Sweet. Very sweet. Sour. Does it taste? Well, it’s sweet cuz it has like a dead spunk on it, but I think it’s also it would be sweet no matter what. Um, it’s sweeter than a real strawberry. Yeah. Here, watch. All right, let’s try one of these. M. It’s good, huh? I’m so biased cuz I really love strawberries just regularly, but these are really good. I like the little white sauce on the condensed milk. The condensed milk. Yum. You want this last one? No. And what do you rate then? This is a good nine. Nine out of 10. Maybe like a 9.2. Is it better than the the orange tongue from yesterday? I really don’t know. I’m biased. So, I really like oranges more than I like strawberries. But in the case that you like strawberries, look at that. Strawberries more than uh oranges, then yeah, you might like these strawberries more than than oranges. But um they’re really good. They taste amazing. I don’t really know how to describe it. Tastes like a regular strawberry. Maybe less like uh yeah, like less bitter, more sweet. It’s really good. Wow. So good. Come. That is so good. Bring yourself to Kyoto. Get yourself some N strawberries. Yeah, bring yourself to Kyoto. Maybe we’ll try some of these N strawberries. It’s kind of funny the name N strawberries. Kyo, we’re in Kyoto. You know, kind of backwards, but still good. Still very good. You should jump. You should come and try this yourself. It’s amazing. We’re having so much fun in the Montara district. So much fun. So, uh, yeah, we’re going to keep walking around, trying some stuff, getting some more souvenirs, and saying hello to the nice culture here, and, uh, enjoying Japan. So, yeah, come along with us.
