We spent one unforgettable week road tripping around Kyushu, Japan’s southern gem — a region full of dramatic landscapes, peaceful temples, quirky surprises, and some of the best (private) hot springs we’ve ever experienced.
Our journey began in Fukuoka, where we explored serene parks and city views from the tower, before hitting the road to Nagasaki, a city with deep history and charm. From there, we ventured into the misty mountains of Takachiho, discovering sacred shrines and breathtaking gorges. A surprise ride on the adorable Amaterasu Railway added a little magic before we made our way to Beppu, home of steamy hells, onsen indulgence, and a quick visit to the postcard-perfect town of Yufuin.
This was a trip of contrasts — from solemn history to playful railways, mountain serenity to onsen relaxation — and it might just be one of our favorite parts of Japan so far.
