Train to the Clouds – Best Matterhorn View on Switzerland’s Gornergrat Railway🇨🇭

Today we are riding Europe’s highest open-air railway to the clouds To see the best panoramic view of Matterhorn And explore the local specialties… Please enjoy the trip! Hello from Zermatt! It’s a charming alpine village famous for breathtaking views of the Matterhorn. You might not recognize Matterhorn by name, …but you’ve probably seen it on this chocolate bar. Yes! Toblerone is shaped like the Matterhorn! Today from Zermatt, we’ll take Europe’s highest open-air railway… The Gornergrat Railway …to see the best panoramic view of the Matterhorn. Here’s the route: We’ll climb all the way up to an altitude of 3,089m (10,135 ft) …where we can get a panoramic view of 29 peaks including Matterhorn. The fare is 132 CHF round trip Eligible to use Swiss Travel Pass and Half Fare Card. 8:50 am Feel like I’m in Shinjuku Station…🫠 Yes, the train is very very popular in the morning when the sky tend to be clearer. I’ve heard the right side of the train offers the best views… Actually for 7 CHF extra, you can board 3 mins early to secure a seat on the right. But today, we decided to test our luck. YAY We got the seats on the right side! ✌️ Lucky day Huge windows… …and can be opened!!! Off we go It will be a 33-min, short but scenic ride. We’ll experience 2 seasons as we climbing up in altitude. Look! The Matterhorn came into view shortly after we left the station. It’s playing hide-and-seek behind the clouds right now Fingers crossed the wind will clear things up by the time we reach the top! Apart from the scenery, the Gornergrat Railway is also famous for its history. Can you imagine this train has been running for 127 years?!!! Opened in 1898, it is Switzerland’s 1st electric cogwheel train. See the toothed rack rail in the center of the track? It is specially designed for the train to climb steep mountains There are 5 stops along the route before we hit the top. Passengers can hop-on or hop-off along the way. We are arriving at Riffelalp. I heard there’s a luxury resort here with its own private tram! I don’t want to add more burden to my wallet… So let’s head straight to the top to take in the panoramic views first… …and maybe explore some stations on the way back down. Wowza Matterhorn right in front… Behind the clouds… At this altitude, we got a perfect blend of greenery and snowy peaks. Everyone is already fascinated by the views outside. We are approaching Riffelberg. It’s a popular getaway for hiking in summer and skiing in winter. Many people choose to get off here and hike to the top. Good luck hikers! Seems like there’s something exciting Yes the Matterhorn again The superstar here Look at that! Someone’s paragliding like a bird. Incredible… But absolutely terrifying for me… We are steadily ascending in altitude. More and more snow came into sight My eardrums are starting to crack. Whoo it’s a bit cold for my hands now. Hello hikers! Seems like more people attempt to climb up than I expected. Look at all those footprints. I heard the Matterhorn is actually one of the deadliest peaks in the world Over 500 climbers have lost their lives trying to conquer it. In Zermatt, there’s even a Mountaineers’ Cemetery
honoring those who never made it back. In a few final turns, we are approaching the top. 33 mins just feels too short for such a scenic ride. Let’s enjoy the final magic moments. It’s totally the world of glaciers now We are at the clouds now. Gornergrat Altitude: 3,089 m / 10,132 ft That’s close to the height of Mount Fuji. (3,776 m) Whooo…It’s pretty cold out here… Let’s head up to the viewing platform Well…The naughty Matterhorn is still playing hide and seek… But the massive Gorner Glacier is clearly in sight. With a length of about 12.9 kms, it’s the 3rd longest glacier in the Alps. Look at those little ponds of glacial meltwater Like jewels It’s not just about the views up here. There’s an Instagram photo spot #HiddenMatterhorn #Swiss #photooftheday …with VR experience in it! It’s included in the train ticket so let’s have a try! WOW I am paragliding towards the Matterhorn I am flying like a bird. OH WOW 360 degree view! Absolutely breathtaking! Just that…I could still smell the last person who wore this helmet…😳😳😳 Thanks to brilliant Swiss engineering
making the beauty of nature accessible to everyone. Conquering mountains by train… By helicopter… Or just on foot… Brilliant SWISS ENGINEERING (This video is NOT sponsored by ON…) The return train is here. We gonna head back. Looks like a lot of people are hopping off the next stop. Must be something worth seeing—let’s join the adventure! We arrived at Rotenboden Altitude: 2.815 m, 9,235 ft The 2nd highest station of the route Rotenboden is famous for this trail leading to Riffelsee Lake. Unfortunately, the lake was still frozen during our visit In summer months, there will be a magical mirror of the Matterhorn in the lake. Like this All the way along the trail you’ll find the highest Alpine Garden in Europe. Rare and resilient beauty Can’t believe they can survive here – 2,800 m above sea level Time for return. The train back is even more crowded… Feels like I joined Tokyo’s morning rush hour But of course there can’t be such a view on Tokyo’s subway. Besides the stunning views, there’s one more star of this region we haven’t seen yet. the blacknose sheep Native to this area, they’re as iconic as the mountains. Let’s see if we can find them back in Zermatt. We are back in Zermatt. Thanks for the gorgeous trip! Wait What’s that? A carriage of the Glacier Express Train! The famous scenic ride connecting Zermatt and St Moritz Hope I can take it next year! So where are you blacknose cuties? OH MY FOUND IT Looks like blacknose sheep also come with black faces, ears, and feet… Why do they look kinda familiar? Wait a second… They’re Shaun the Sheep in real life! The Shaun family is so focused on their grass buffet They don’t really care about silly tourists watching them 😂 I’ve heard these blacknose sheep aren’t just cute… They’re also kinda tasty… SO… I’m sorry but it looks so good… It’s my first time having lamb racks served on a sizzling hot stone. I can sear each piece to the perfect medium-rare I want. WOW So tender and juicy! An American couple at the next table is happily chatting with a guy they just met. While enjoying the lamb chops, we’ve learned the family’s resume… Older son – Wharton MBA Younger son – Silicon Valley engineer Daughter – Harvard Law grad Dad – Runs a prestigious architecture firm Successful man, successful life… (Guess how I know? 🙃) It’s about sunset time. We gonna climb up a bit to an observation deck. Based on my research, it’s a perfect spot to have Zermatt and Matterhorn in one frame. Here we are. So many photographers are waiting here for the perfect blue hour shot. So we joined them… …and got this clip. Oh it’s getting really cold up here. Tomorrow morning we’ll chase the sunrise as it paints the Matterhorn. Sweet dreams 😴 🥱 Good morning It’s almost sunrise time. We get up early for a magical moment called alpenglow …when the sunrise lights up the mountain peak If you are lucky enough, you’ll witness the Matterhorn’s peak blush in rosy gold in 10 seconds. That should be the so-called Alpenglow. Not as rosy as those instagram photos, but still beautiful. Hope you enjoyed our trip in Zermatt. We are Travel Within Reach.
