POV Ski Tour of Furano Ski Resort – Hokkaido, Japan
[Music] well good morning everyone and welcome back to the amazing Barano i tell you what this place is such a breath of fresh air after living in the seco for like 3 months it’s just it’s quiet it’s peaceful it’s Japanese still i um I really like this place it wouldn’t be a day in Fano without actually skiing the ski resort so that’s what I’m going to do today i’m going to take you on a trip around the Ferrano ski resort we’re starting at the Kitanomian side i’ve only skied the resort three times okay so I don’t know everywhere but we’re going to go for an explore and it’s going to give you a bit of a look at Pirano Ski Resort it looks like it’s going to be possibly sunny but we’ll wait and see so anyway I’ll see you at the at the gondola okay so this is the mountain center where you buy your ticket ticket to a little chill area you buy your ticket and then I think you go through this we’ll see that’s right i forgot you go outside a little bit and then you go up these stairs to the gondola it’s been a while i haven’t been here for 2 years so yeah as I said this is the Kitonomi inside so there’s a chair lift here that goes like up the first groomed run I guess and then you’ve got the Kitanomi Gondra so the Kitanomian side is the one that’s closest to town you’ve got Phoenix Ferrano and Phoenix West with Nisade that I used to work for there’s a rhythm shop here and that’s sort of pretty much about it there’s a bunch of like other little accommodations around it’s the closest to town there’s it’s still being built up for like it’s it’s the next hot spot but um we’ll go ski over to the Ferrano zone which is the other side which is where the Prince Hotel is and the big ropeway which is cool so we’ll go have a look at that we’ll ski up here first and then see what we [Music] find all right so we’re at to the top of the Kitanom zone and uh this is new got a big new Fano sign like the Hollywood sign but Ferrano spec have a look and the mountain ranges here in the backdrop are insane unfortunately it’s a bit cloudy today so you can’t see where I was yesterday but um I’ll show you anyway so just behind out there that’s where I was yesterday [Music] [Music] somewhere in those mountains might come back everyone wants their photo also I did forget to mention it is March the 9th right so it’s almost spring don’t be expecting any power it hasn’t snowed here in the last couple of days look the benefit is we get lovely weather so you can see everything the disadvantage is I don’t think there’s any power all right we’ll switch over to the head cam and I’ll go for a warm-up run back down to the gondola and show you I guess part of the Kitanomin zone wrong skis for this rock all right so straight into an intersection if I’m not mistaken I think that’s the easy way and this is the harder way we’re on a warm up but we’ll go the harder way why not it’s not too gnarly and you can see another intersection stop what’s through here eh oh mogul no thank you all right we’ll go this way not very good at mogul especially on a warmup this is kind of cool though little cut track oh okay whoa all right all right so we’ll stop here so you can imagine how good something like that would be in deep pow unfortunately I’ve never skied this resort with deep power i just always come at the wrong times it’s like a 4 5h hour drive from this echo if the weather’s good but that in deep pow just straight down the bottom pop out the end do I ski it nah it’s still warm up maybe I’ll come back and do it this afternoon oh okay i remember this this is where the chair pops out yeah there’s a chair up there okay heat heat woohoo absolutely [ __ ] it down there oh I haven’t skied that quick in a long time don’t even think Nco has anything that’s steep man some carving skis would be good today oh okay all right so this is like I guess mid mountain gondola goes past here and then there’s this chair that also starts at the bottom which comes up to this area there’s a little freestyle zone here from what I remember i don’t know if it’s there all winter by the way but ah you know what we’ll have a look why not oh Ferrano wave eh oh yeah it’s like a little slalom it’s a bit too flat woohoo hello sir oh we’re just bombing down here eh that’s where I was yesterday those big boys out there there you go that’s top to bottom Kitanomian zone back on the Gundi I guess [Music] so I also forgot to mention Birano has some backcountry access gates this is one of them i’ve never been up there it’s closed for the rest of the season by the looks of it there’s a big glide crack it says on the sign there but you can exit this zone and hike up to that next peak and you basically got like a a gated backcountry zone obviously with all gated backcountry zones highly recommend to have beacon shovel and probe i would even go as far to say as it’s necessary you don’t need it to walk out the gate but if something happens you’re going to want that gear and you’re going to want to know how to use it visibility is getting worse what I might do ski over to the Ferrano zone see if I can get a bit of skiing done there before we lose the viz that’s a cool photo i got do that Mowgly run see how I’m feeling can’t really see the undulations in the snow right now it’s a bit of a bit of a problem whoa the lighting’s so flat oh yeah i can see this should be interesting it’s been a while since I’ve skied something like this oh and it’s icy that’s not ideal what happened there ski came off i’m going to have to walk down to that all right don’t do that kids maybe I did something wrong super lucky I didn’t hurt myself more than that was it a pre-release the old shifts or did I [ __ ] up who knows these days oh hurt my shoulder as well all right I’ll ski that more carefully can’t lift my arm like that anyway we’ll continue on with the mission all right there you go where’s this other lip there it is oh sorry about that guys three seasons and I still stack it i’m just a regular dude all right taking it super easy so this is the I don’t actually know the name of it but this is the connecting lift it connects you from the Kitanomin zone to the Ferrano zone so I believe to get across you have to take this chair or you obviously you can drive on the bottom standard two-seater i guess you can ski down here if you want to tell you what this is one slow chair lift this area looks sick if there was power nice and steep at the top it’s quite thin though obviously it just follows the chair i imagine you can ski down through there i don’t actually know but um there’s tracks so it’s possible you can see behind me that Ferrano the city of Ferrano it’s a big city Ferrano like it’s bigger than Kuchan by far lot of farmland around as well really rich fertile land i got told last night because of the volcanic activity ah okay you can see why that zone’s closed look at those massive glide cracks the whole width or the whole depth of the snow pack you do not want to be anywhere near one of them if it lets go it’s like another backcountry zone kind of cool okay so that’s a a gated zone I guess see what we find oh I remember here not going to go the black ungroomed after what just happened it’s a nice big long groomer oh All right we’ll go ride the ropeway hey go back up towards the top and catch the chair to the top and then um might come back down here once more so this is the this area here is the Ferrano zone the Prince Hotel i guess that’s a restaurant by the looks of it maybe the ticket office and then you’ve got the big the big ropeway loading zone haven’t been on one of these all season all right we’ll get inside shoulder’s starting to feel a bit better i think I just tweaked the rotator cuff didn’t hit a rock or anything doesn’t look like it oh yeah maybe that looks like a new one you probably can’t see it but anyway a tour of Piranha Resort and then I stuck it and absolutely eat it over here is Ningle Terrace it’s like a cool little collection of like wooden walkways and little shops with trinkets and stuff i believe I if I’ve got some photos I’ll put some photos in there of [Music] it it’s a cool little place we might not even make this ropeway maybe we will make it nope we don’t make it [Music] [Applause] [Music] on the ropeway here 101 people in bit in 2002 [Music] go all the way up there we go back down the bottom catch the ropeway up and then head back over to the Kipomian zone little cute two-seater up downhill romance lift there’s some wicked skis [Music] so this takes you to the highest lift access point in Ferrano you might be able to hike higher i don’t actually know all right so there’s a backount gate that way and that way you can go both ways oh you can hike up there wow never done either of them they’re open not today so I think this is like around about almost 1,00 m about as high as the pizza box in Mico actually maybe a little bit a little bit less but roughly the same height i guess it goes into some sort of cool zone that I’m not going to be able to show you maybe maybe I’ll do it next time obviously I’ve got no one with me either so doing backcountry zones by yourself very irresponsible heat heat i think we’ll go right cuz last time we were over that side show you another groomed run yeah we’ll go right that’s where I was last time slow [Music] down oh they got snow making machines here that’s interesting i’m pretty sure this mountain like faces eastish so it’ probably get baked by the sun coming into spring interesting all right that was cool some big wide turns going down there carving skis would have been so good for that where do we go left or right c1 c2 c1 c2 is a blue all right we’ll go to the blue anyway there’s a couple of runs down here we’re not too far from the bottom you can see the ropeway around these trees another little chair that’s cool i guess that’s maybe the beginner chair take that green run there oh that’s that chair there there you go ah go on we’ll ride this little chair are you ready some of this [Music] There you go i don’t know what that chair is called but um we’ve been on it now if you’re just beginning the Prince Romance Lift and you’re staying on the Prince side at the Prince Hotel or you have a car or whatever Prince Romance lift would probably be one of the better places to start i’ll show you what you can ski pretty crazy green run if you’re a beginner that would be scary like super super beginner nice run though to like sort of build yourself up to it’s probably better than any green run that I can think of in this actually there’s the Prince Hotel all right we’ll go back to the ropeway hey where’s the ropeway she’s coming down we’re going to get ready oh sweet we should get on this next [Music] one figure out how to get back to the Kitanomi zone i think we’ll call it a day i think we’ve seen most of the the groomers over here just giving you like a bit of a tour of tour of the resort obviously no off peace stuff at the moment it’s just not worth it in my opinion but I’ll be back here one day and I will ski some deep power here i think we just go straight oh yeah no zone i can see how this resort would be crazy with power there’s so many spots like that looks hectic and scary right now it’s just the snow pack’s melting it was definitely above zero before probably not now there’s a bit of wind coming through and some clouds no crazy skiing today but you know what this channel’s for everyone skiers of all types and snowboarders of all types male female no matter where you’re from i try and cater to everyone you know as much as possible in the realm of what I want to do so yeah I guess this is how you get back to the other side kitanom zone let’s see what’s here oh I remember this from like 2 years ago man you’d hate to be a beginner and have to come back this way pretty sure I can take like another run that I haven’t taken to get back down to the bottom so we’ll do that if I can figure out where it is another crazy spot for power though all right so we go down here to the right and see what’s down this way i’m pretty sure I’ve skied it before [Music] and now super quiet oh sticky well there you go bit more beginner route back to the lift i think snow’s completely different down here and then up the top it’s almost like it melted earlier and then refreezed guess we go this way yeah oh that’s cool little forest [Music] huh there we go how do I get off this ski hill really get my binding looked at I think there you go ladies and gentlemen that was um some not all of Pirano ski resort hopefully I’ve done a good job like sort of showcasing at least some of the on piece skiing here i did a horrible job showcasing a bit of the off-piece skiing so I decided not to continue with it amazing place for ano amazing place still super typical Japanese it’s obviously getting busier as time goes on but that’s life you know as people discover the secrets and advertise and build accommodation and stuff it just it changes way less busy than Nico and an amazing base if you want to come here and do some big mountain terrain nico’s back country is amazing because you get incredible powder but you don’t really get the um the big mountain stuff whereas here you know there’s still amazing powder but if you really want the high alpine crazy terrain it is anywhere from half an hour to an hour and a half drive to some of the most ridiculous zones in Hokkaido all right so before the end of the day we’re stopping in the Kitanomin Mountain Base and we’re just going to have a little Japanese lunch yes little ramen yeah it’s very busy here still for Fano it’s not busy at all but compared to 2 years ago it’s a lot more busy which is good to see because Fano deserves the tourism but I’ll show you what I got for lunch i’m excited for [Music] it what have you got how is it it’s really good pretty good it’s a ramen classic ramen miso ramen i think the thing about Japan right is like ski like usually ski resort food sucks right but it’s pretty difficult to make shitty Japanese food that’s probably what I would say about it so there you have it that’s a very brief look at the Ferrrono Ski Resort i guess everything on pie or most on pie took all of the main lifts for you tried to sort of show you around as much as I could while um while the sun was out or while there was at least clear weather and just my luck it has just started to snow unfortunately I’ve come to Fano three times now and I’ve never had the luck of having uh fresh pow in the resort i know there’s some crazy backount zones i just it’s so crazy during winter in the seco you just never get the time to do anything uh and it’s not until usually March even sometimes April that um everything starts to chill out a little bit and you get the time to come out to here in Ferrano so anyway uh I hope that maybe you learned something a little bit about the resort i highly recommend that you do come here it’s a fantastic place more traditional Japanese than Nco and as I explained earlier there’s some really big terrain around here for ski touring backcountry skiing if you have any questions about the resort feel free to leave them down in the comments below make sure to leave a like and if you like seeing [ __ ] Hokkaido content consider Nice. We did a week here after Niseko in Feb. No significant new offpiste snow then either but better snow onpiste than what you had as was winter.
Feels more like Niseko used to be I.e our first time in 2016, although you still had to be tactical organising dinner out.
I reckon Furano will go like Niseko in the next 5 years though. The new large hotels and Rhythm building the new big shop there hints as the Niseko overflow etc.
It's better than Niseko if you get no snow and have to ski onpiste etc, just could do with some lift infrastructure improvements, but what Japanese resort doesn't. It's not Europe that's for sure. 😉
I too have been looking for something other than niseko.
Furano looks like it could be the next big thing.
When I looked up snowfall though it says average is 9m compared to niseko and rusutsu 14m
I also saw snow makers. That worries me. Is there the same deep tree runs ?
Thinking maybe kiroro and kokusai may be the best options with 19m
So, ah…….. what's the speed limit on those Furano downhills?
Love that new sign, need that photo! Great that you keep plugging having the rescue gear out the gates and knowing how to use it. Lost a ski on your DINs? Lucky you are ok, regular dude!
I was there on the same day March 9th. It started snowing in the afternoon, quite decent snow actually. Too bad, you missed it.
What resort did you ski the previous day? “Those big boys out there” haha. Planning a trip to Furano Feb ‘26, for 7 days on snow… keen to know of some other resort options nearby incase we get bored with such a long time on Furano (we will have a car!). Cheers!
