While winning a national title at the 2025 Toyota USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships is a priceless accomplishment in itself, the ultimate goal for this week at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, is to earn a spot on the Team USA roster for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in September.

Success during the four-day meet, being held July 31 through Aug. 3, doesn’t necessarily come with a plane ticket to Japan, but it’s a huge step toward getting to compete against the best track and field athletes from around the globe.

The qualification process ultimately has a few levels to it, but there are some ways to automatically qualify for the biggest meet of the year, and seven Team USA athletes have locked up their spots in Tokyo. How’d they do it?

As the reigning world champions in their respective events – titles won at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary – the following athletes from the United Stages are guaranteed the opportunity to defend their titles:

Women

Chase Jackson – Shot PutKatie Moon – Pole VaultSha’Carri Richardson – 100mLaulauga Tausaga – Discus

Men

Ryan Crouser – Shot PutGrant Holloway – 110m HurdlesNoah Lyles – 100m, 200m

Another way to earn an automatic spot at the World Championships is to be among the winners at the two-day, season-ending event on the 2025 Wanda Diamond League schedule. That event, scheduled for Aug. 27-28 in Zurich, includes the season’s top performers going head to head one final time.

Points accumulated during the first 14 events of the season determine the athletes who advance to the final event, where they’ll compete for more prize money and Diamond League titles – and spots at the World Athletics Championships.

Beyond those two scenarios is where performances at the USATF Outdoor Championships come in to play.

In order to be eligible for the World Athletics Championships, athletes first must have finished among the top three places in their respective events this week in Oregon.

Additionally, they must achieve a world-standard time/score in that event, or they must be high enough in the World Athletics Rankings, a reward for their finishes throughout the competitive calendar. Rankings are based on a scoring table and points calculator that factor in the quality of the meets throughout the season.

The following athletes are currently qualified for the World Championship by virtue of their finishes at the USATF Championship and their world standard marks. This list does not include athletes that are currently qualified by virtue of their world ranking or athletes that may be selected via the relay pool.
