LOS ANGELES — Brendan Fraser trades Hollywood for Tokyo in a moving new drama that blurs the line between performance and reality.

Searchlight Pictures has released the trailer for “Rental Family,” a Tokyo-set drama that explores identity, connection and the fine line between performance and reality.

The Oscar-winning actor plays an American struggling to find purpose, who takes a job with a Japanese “rental family” agency, where stand-ins are hired to play roles in clients’ lives. As his character immerses himself in their stories, he begins to form bonds that challenge his understanding of what’s real and what’s part of the act.

Directed by HIKARI (37 Seconds), the film also stars Takehiro Hira, Mari Yamamoto, Shannon Gorman and Akira Emoto. HIKARI co-wrote the screenplay with Stephen Blahut, and produced the film alongside Eddie Vaisman, Julia Lebedev and Shin Yamaguchi. “Rental Family” will open in theaters November 21.

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of Searchlight Pictures and this ABC station.
