Serious question for the car community… Why are people spending $45K–$50K on a Civic Type R or GR Corolla when you could get a 2025 Nissan Z for the same money?

They are totally different cars lol. Not a good comparison

Cause as good as the rear end looks, there’s no salvaging the front. I sort of see what they were going for, a kind of retro callback to the Zs of the late 70s / early 80s, but they could have done so much better of a job with it

With LSD, it starts at 55k, and the LSD is important.

I just don’t find the same value and reliability in Nissan that is offered in Honda or Toyota.

I dont want a z. I’ve had a 350z. All are cool and good cars but just meh to own I think, and they have a history of depreciating really hard. I guess your stumped because of your perspective that they are great cars when they are kind of boring. thats why they didn’t know what to do and tried to design it like a 240z this time.

Type R is cheaper (Australia) by nearly $10k and handling is significantly better than the Z. Nice interior.
Golf R is AWD, has a nice interior, good engine and automatic option if that is your deal. A great all rounder.
Corolla GR is AWD, better handling and also $11k cheaper in Australia. Manual & Auto options now.
Z Good motor, nice interior, mad skids! Handling and overall performance not as focused but a great touring car!
In short, people want very different things from cars. They are all good options and have their respective strong and weak points. I didn’t go with the Z because I wanted an FK8 Type R and when I was in a position to buy one, the FL5 was released.

People are silly. The Z is the best out of that bunch by a long shot

Drove a Z, underwhelming to say the least.

I watched a video where a pro driver tracked the Z against the MK5 Supra and the Z could only last a couple laps then had major brake issues. I know most people won’t be tracking their cars but when buying a sports car I would like to take into consideration the realistic performance of the vehicle when I would be spending that much money. Doesn’t seem worth it to spend that much money on a car when it’s actually unreliable as a sports car in that fashion.

The Z is a ‘parts bin car’, which a lot of people don’t like (though IMO it’s actually good.
The Z is on a modified version of a platform that is over 20 years old, and that comes with it’s own issues. The GR and Type R are on much newer platforms.
Nissan as a company doesn’t have the reputation for stellar reliability (though in this years initial Quality survey JD Power had them as second best, beating Honda and Toyota)
The Civic Type R and GR Corolla are both 5 door hatchbacks. Decent trunk space, space for 5-ish adults. They can be you only car without many sacrifices, the Z is a sports car. 2 seats, not much storage, lots of sacrifices if it’s your only car.
OP for my the Nissan sub is trying to sell cars. This is their profile. Mans is doing a shit job at it too.

More doors and trunk space for me. Hot hatches overall are more interesting to me than coupes are.

Would be better to ask why buy a Supra? Z is filling a hole in the market for sure. I’m stuck between that and a GR86 for my next purchase.

I spent $35k total after import, licensing, registration, etc etc for my 1999 Silvia Spec R. Why did I do it? I’ve wanted one in that exact color for 20+ years since they came out, and swore to my preteen self I’d buy one. So I did. It isn’t about logic it’s about the love of the game.

Have you seen the front of the new Z? That’s the main reason.

Weren’t the new Zs overpriced during launch and then some? Also totally different cars, especially the GR with its WRC DNA.

Four doors, I have a family. GR Corolla was all wheel drive, I live where it snows so that is a big bonus.
Random side notes about Nissan: they have poor reputation company-wide. I personally know nothing about the Nissan Z and its reliability. Even if I was looking for a coupe sporty car, I am unsure how much I can trust Nissan in general so why would I take that risk?

I don’t think I have seen a Z sell for the same price as an R

Only time id go for the z over the grc is if i needed rwd.
