Okinawa is a subtropical paradise blooming with vivid flowers. Photographer Alfie Goodrich captures the profound beauty of the island’s nature. Along the way, he meets a couple who incorporates blossoms into cuisine, as well as a flower farmer creating jobs for individuals with special needs. Alfie also encounters a mysterious tree that comes into bloom at dusk and vanishes at dawn.

Shuri-Kinjo District Stone-paved Path


This 16th-century road connected Shuri with the Naha port and the southern part of Okinawa’s main island. A 300-meter section remains.

This exotic botanical garden displays diverse varieties of plants, including orchids, originating in subtropical and tropical climates.

Sagaribana on Ishigaki Island


Sagaribana grows in clusters on the northernmost tip of Ishigaki Island. They come into bloom during the night from June through August.

Access


From Tokyo, it takes about two and a half hours by plane to Naha on the main island. From Naha, it’s another one-hour flight to Ishigaki.
