Could This Ferry Ride Change How You See Japan? Sailing to Hokkaido and a monkey surprise!

This puppy looks extremely happy,
but it’s not a happy puppy. Hokkaido! That’s where we’re going. Right there! The guardians of the goddess of the sea,
who protects fishermen and sailors by calming stormy waters and guiding ships to
safety, kept us company as we prepared to board the ferry to Hokkaido, Japan’s
second largest island. Fishermen ask  for her blessings prior to embarking on their
voyages and give thanks upon their safe return. Today it was our turn to cross the Tsugaru Strait from Tsugaru Kaikyo Ferry Terminal in Oma, a
fisherman’s town in the northernmost point of Honshu Island, famous across Japan for its Pacific
bluefin tuna. Oma tuna weigh on average 100 kg or 220 pounds and have been known to weigh up
to 440 kg or 980 pounds. Wow! Imagine that! This puppy looks extremely happy,
but it’s not a  happy puppy. In the dog waiting corner. You have to close him
in here and it’s locked. Yeah, they are locked and lock him. Lock them up in here. Lock
them up. I don’t think that’s a happy puppy. For a Chihuahua that could be the right size.
But if you have a husky, it ain’t gonna happen. Look at that happy puppy. Well, in theory. That’s our ride to Hokkaido. We’re going to
Hokkaido from Oma. You can go also from Aomori. So, that’s the only two places you can go to
Hokkaido. This ride is much shorter. It’s an hour and a half and it’s going to cost around
18,000 Japanese yen. The other one is much more expensive and much much longer, around four and
a half hours. So, we chose this one because we’re cheap. On the way back we’re going to choose the
other one. Super easy. Without reservation, you can buy a ticket and go. You don’t need anything.
Just a car registration if you’re going by car. Otherwise, they’re going to help you. Nothing
in English, by the way. But they are helpful. One of those happy dogs. The cheapest option is to not to buy
a seat. If you’re not buying a seat, you’re sitting on the floor, but you don’t
pay for that. We like that option. Yeah. That’s the place. Reserved seat for the special people. That’s not us. We’re just a standard. Not
us. Sorry. Let’s find the outside. This is it. Looks like this is
the whole area where you can go. It’s ain’t happening. It’s so loud. We were hoping that the goddess of the
sea would bless us with some spectacular bird sightings. Well, the only wings we
saw so far were those of an airplane. The details of the landscape became more vivid,
more alive. We were approaching Hakodate, Japan’s first international trade port,
which opened to foreign trade in 1894, as the Edo period, Japan’s era of self-imposed
isolation from the world, was coming to an end. A place of new beginnings and a reminder
that anything is possible with an open mind. Let’s go. I don’t think it’s here. It’s here.
They’re going down. It’s over there, maybe. And just like that, another dot
on the map had become reality. I don’t think so. No. No. No.
No. I don’t think so. No. No. No. No. It’s never ever ever ever gonna happen. I don’t think so. No. No. No. No. I don’t
think so. No. No. No. No. It’s never ever ever ever gonna happen. I don’t think
so. No. No. No. No. I don’t think so. No. No. No. No. It’s never ever ever
ever gonna happen. I don’t think so. No, no, no, no. I don’t think so. No, no, no, no.
It’s never ever ever ever gonna to happen. I don’t think so. No, no, no. Maybe someday you’ll have
it your way. Maybe someday it’ll all work out. Maybe someday you’ll have it your way. Maybe
someday it’ll all work out. Until then, nope. A nope. A nope. A nope. Definitely. Nope. A nope. Nope. A nope. probably never
ever ever ever ever gonna happen. No… Humans will never be as cute as them.
