⁴ᴷ Hokkaido: Kushiro Station (北海道: 釧路駅) – Japan Walking Tour (July, 2025)

To begin my journey around almost the entire island of Hokkaido, I took an 18-hour ferry ride and landed in Tomakomai. From there, my trip around Hokkaido officially began.

From Kitami, I traveled past Lake Kussharo and the Kushiro Wetlands, eventually arriving in the city of Kushiro on the Pacific coast. Compared to the Sea of Okhotsk side, the climate here feels noticeably different—warmer and more humid.

Kushiro used to be the fourth most populous city in Hokkaido, but now it ranks sixth. Still, it apparently has the second-largest number of restaurants in the prefecture, following Sapporo.

From Kushiro Station, I walked south toward the ocean, heading for the Suehiro entertainment district, located just before the Kushiro River. Since it was a Thursday, the area wasn’t particularly crowded, but I did see several touts standing around, giving the district an unexpectedly large and active feel.
