An American in Japan – Ep 17: Solo day eating my way through Osaka | Tips for solo travel in Japan

That seems really good. Hi. Hello. Today is September 15th. It’s my first weekend off since we have opened Halloween. I did have two days off in the first week just because of some schedule swaps. I didn’t have them consecutively. So, I really feel like this is the first time I’m taking a minute to breathe since we opened Halloween. And I realized I I I was going to just kind of go take the day and do my thing and relax. which I could do, of course, but I realized I haven’t really caught up with all of you as to how life has been. It’s been a really busy 2 weeks, the final week of getting everything ready for Halloween to opening Halloween. I did the the international talent showcase Osaka uh just a couple days ago and that was so so cool. But it was a really hectic start to the next two months of my life here working for Universal Japan. And we’re all kind of getting into the swing of things. Some of us are starting to feel like, okay, you know, I’ve got these days off. I’ve got some long weekends. I want to plan some stuff out. Some people it’s like really setting in that this is our life for the next eight weeks, you know, of just repeat, repeat, repeat. And yeah, we’re kind of all just figuring it out and sorting it out. This is a holiday weekend. There’s a lot of holidays that happen here, but I think some sort of holiday, something similar to grandparents day maybe. Um is going to storm the next two days, which is on par with anytime I try to go out and get a massage, it just rains. Anyway, I just need a full body massage. My body is going through it. And listen, I am creeping on to 30 at the moment. And this is much more physical activity than I do. It might take dayto-day life. It’s a pretty physical job that we have. And I’m just not used to that. So, I was thinking today I’ll go out. I’ll find somewhere to sit down and just have an actual meal. It’s been a minute since I’ve done that. I’ve really just been surviving off of I need chapstick so bad. Hold on. Anyway, I’ve been surviving off of convenience store food, which is great. Very convenient, but I just would love to sit down and eat a meal at a restaurant. You know what? Let’s go. Let’s go find somewhere to eat today. I just got a message from Heirlow, which is the brand I use for a virtual eim while I’m traveling. um that I’m getting close to needing to restock my data, but I thought this would be a great time to kind of throw in my suggestion. If you’re ever working overseas, if you’re traveling, heirlow has been the best, easiest tool I’ve had as somebody who works out of the country a lot. You can just select whatever plan works best for you. You can pick country, continent, date, amount of data, whatever you need that works easiest for you. Here’s my link if you want to try out. I’m going to do a video, I think, talking about the things I’ve learned working overseas, working on contract, and my suggestions, dos and don’ts for when you’re working overseas. If you’re getting ready for a contract or, you know, if you’re just curious what it’s like to work outside of your home country often. Can’t go night. When they say visiting Japan is just a lot of stairs, they’re like climbing so many stairs every day. You can use Google Maps to navigate the train systems all over Japan. It’s actually really easy. So, that would be my suggestion. And from here, it’s about a 7-minute walk to where I’m going to go eat. Not too bad. And then there’s a lot of other options in the area. So, you know, another must have for me while navigating Japan is a portable charger. Plugs are not readily available the way they are for me in the US. You know, you can usually find a coffee shop with plugs that you can just charge your phone in. Not a thing here. They I think they’re discouraging people from loitering around too much. But this portable charger that I’ve been using, I love. It’s a USBC plug and then it plugs straight into the wall. But for me, it works great because it’s my laptop, my phone, and my portable fan. So, if anything dies, I’m set. I am so glad I’ve decided to just take a chance and try somewhere new because this is such a different energy and vibe. I think I’m going to walk along the river because I’m following this bridge. It is significantly cooler in Japan than when I first got here. It’s still not cool though, but I don’t feel like I am sweltering. I love the convenience of all the vending machines around every corner. And as I say that, I literally That was not planned. There’s one right here. And you know what? I’ll take it as a sign that I need to drink water or an Aquarius or something cuz man, it do be hot. See how convenient this is? You can get your sodas. Mineral water is very popular. I’m not a big fan of mineral water. I really like uh spring water. They just don’t have that as often. Aquarius is like a Gatorade with no flavor. The other brand that is similar to that would be the Picari Sweat, but I just prefer the taste of this one. 180 yen, less than $1.50. though. Okay, my next must have while in Japan, some sort of coin purse. I got mine in N when we visited the deer. See the little deer on there? They’re so cute. Uh, you have so many coins. So many coins. So many coins all the time. Coins that are not necessary. Why do they have single yen coins? I don’t know. I don’t know. because you’ll never use them and no one accepts them. But you need a coin purse because working in small amounts, you’re going to want it. Highly suggest a coin purse. Something easy to spot in the bottom of your bag or or in your cross body bag. I’m regretting my words. I’m sweating so bad. There’s so many little restaurants right here on the water that look so fun. I think I’m coming up to the one that I pinned, but I’m going to, you know, take a look at it, see if I like the vibes, and then I might check out one of these spots, too. Or maybe grab a glass of wine or something. Man, these fans are a lifesaver. Definitely a mustave. The struggle of trying to get a waiter’s attention. Feels so weird to just shout out at them. They’re also very busy. I’m going to get this pumpkin cream pasta and a banana beer. Okay. Hi. Okay. And I got a good mask. Oh, hi. Pumpkin pasta. Uh, that’s it. Or sorry. I really, really, really, really wish I knew better Japanese. Like, there’s certain things that you just start to pick up on. Like when you’re checking out the convenience store, they’re going to ask you, “Do you want these heated up? Do you want a bag? Do you need silverware?” And you start to like get them and half the time I can figure out what they’re asking me. I just have absolutely no idea how to respond. If I was here longer, not that I can’t learn more right now, I am learning something every day in Japanese, but if I have more time, some of the people that I work with are so good at just getting information across and I just can’t do that yet. But got my order placed. This will be just a nice relaxed environment. I do love to explore more of the local food, but um this is also a really cool space. And I’m trying to figure out what this building was. It’s like a city center. Was maybe a bank or city hall or something cuz it’s got some sort of historical look to it. See what I can research. Okay. But also, while I’m sat here, I’m going to set up my heirlow to tap up. So, I think I’ve gone through 20 gigs in like 25 days, and I use it pretty often. I definitely could use a lot less and save money, but it’s $26 for 30 days of 20 gigs of data, and that’s very good. Compared to if I went through AT&T, it was going to cost me $10 a day. That would have included phone calls um and texts to non iPhone users. Really just don’t need it, you know? So, it’s also kind of nice to choose when you have to see everything going on in the world. Get the pasta on those. Thank you. Delicious. So good. Oh my god. Yum. It’s got little bits of big fat bacon. cheese and pumpkin. Oh, yum. I can’t wait to try this. There we go. I don’t think I’ve ever actually had chunks of I think this is more of like a butternut squash on there, but delicious. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten rind either, but So this is saying that these chairs were preserved and saved from the original structure in the performance space. How cool is that? Do they still fold? Wow, that’s so cool. There’s some sort of dance performance happening here, but I’m just going to Oh, no. this building until someone stops me cuz I can do I’m a journalist. Well, that was fun checking out this old performance center. I mean, it’s still a performance center. It’s been beautifully renovated. I’m sorry, a dance performance was happening in there. Really would love to just wander around this part of town and just check it out. Um, and then I’m going to head over to get a massage at the Platinum Aroma. That’s what it’s called. Uh, where I’ve gotten a massage before. I thought about checking out something over here, but just with my history of rough experiences with massage places, I thought I would go where I knew it was going to be good and I could get a good relaxing massage in and really take in this two-day off weekend. Beautiful little garden path along the river. Some restaurants along the river as well. So lovely. I don’t even know where I’m going. I’m just walking around. So pretty. It’s a storefront with a big team. Thinking I could find my afternoon cup of coffee. Well, look over there. Look at that. What? I need to know what that is. I’m determined to find this little tea shop. I see it sticking out. Looks right into the water. It’s cute. I was hoping it was somewhere you could sit and have a cup of tea, but it’s not. It’s just like a little shop, but it was adorable. I’m going to head back over. There’s a coffee shop right on the corner. Um, there’s actually a couple coffee shops. I’m walking by one right now. Very, very, good. I think I’m going to go put my name in for this one on the corner. It’s right on the bridge. So beautiful. It’s okay. Yeah. Okay. Thank you so much. Thank you. A little harder for my coffee. Right over there. That’s where I had lunch. It turns out one of these cocktail bars that I’ve been wanting to check out is right here. So, I think I’m going to have a little cocktail. Today’s just turning out to be a day of eating and drinking coffee and everything. So, just a day of food. Thank you for Hi. Cute. Hey. Let’s go. So they have been running their business over 170 years. So we cooperated and created a brand new. Got it. Thank you. That was a delightful little cocktail moment. We’ll definitely be going back. Would have loved to have sat there and had another, but I really wanted to get a massage done today. So, thought I’d grab a snack before that and a bottle of water and then go get a massage. Miracle. You really cannot go wrong with these chicken patties out of the heater in the 7-Eleven in the Family Mark. They’re so good. I would never eat chicken at convenience store in the States, but here staying on that most of the time. It’s my dinner almost every day. I put my train card in the lanyard. I tie that lanyard on my bag. It has my work ID in it. That way I always know I can get on the train. I can get into work as long as that is tied to my bag. I’m going to do a 100minute massage with facial and a full body. I’m so ready.
